The newly crowned Miss Cayman Islands, Ambuyah
Ebanks in her moment of glory at Saturday’s pageant
finals
It probably came as no surprise to many people that Ambuyah Ebanks was the one wearing the crown at the end of the incredible Miss Cayman Islands pageant on Saturday night, 18 February. Ms Ebanks stole the show when she took to the catwalk and even though she had some stiff competition from not least Arleth Chiari-Powery, who took first runner-up and the other girls who put in a sterling performance, Ms Ebanks was on the top of her game.
Even in the world of beauty it is all about the performance on the night and from her section of casual wear, her choice of bikini to her outstanding evening gown, Ms Ebanks had the crowd eating out of her hand.
All six feet of her captured the audience’s heart, but more importantly she captured the judges’ points and even though Ms Chiari-Powery took the Miss Photogenic title, often an indicator of the winner, Ms Ebanks took, best legs and best in gown as well as the title.
The evening was a great success. The Miss Cayman Islands Committee 2006 headed up by Lynne Whittaker did a sterling job and created a beautiful stage for the girls and the evening’s entertainers to perform on.
The Lion’s Centre had a healthy audience with standing room only by the time the show was underway.
Compère & MC Deon Mattis and Joel Francis did an excellent job introducing the girls and of course their outfits and the show moved along smoothly.
Minister Hon Charles Clifford made a short and sweet speech to help keep things moving along and maintain the tension of the night’s competition.
The judges faced a tough evening but with the help of the Cayman Islands’ very own super model Selita Ebanks, they came through with the decision that seemed to please the crowd.
There can only ever be one winner. And although Arleth Chiari-Powery was a close contender and her fellow contestants Jhanelle Ellis, who took the Miss Personality title, Cervetta Harvey, who won the fans’ choice of Best Smile in the web vote and Marsena Hydes and Jovani Hessing who took second runner up gave it their best shot, Ms Ebanks walked away with the crown.
With that and her many prizes including the coveted scholarship, she will also now compete against the most beautiful women in the world at both the forthcoming Miss Universe and Miss World Pageants.

Rust, Germany - An international jury will select the prettiest woman of the World Cup in a competition nine days before the start of the football extravaganza in Germany, organisers said on Monday.
A total of 32 women - one from each participating nation - will be eligible to take part in the Miss World Cup contest in the southwestern town of Rust on June 1.
At the gala, the women aged from 18-28 will first appear in the football strip of the country they represent before changing to evening dress and then finally bathing costumes.
"Nothing like this has ever been done before," according to organiser Horst Klemmer, who is also responsible for staging the annual Miss Germany contest.
Klemmer said participants must be either born in the country they represent or hold its citizenship.
The winner will represent her country at various engagements and World Cup games during the competition, which runs from June 9 to July 9.
The organiser said the jury would consist of prominent figures from the world of sport and entertainment, but did not give any names. Sapa-dpa

( L - R ) WENDY FITZWILLIAM, COOPER AND WRIGHT
THE ANNOUNCEMENT by Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam, (UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador), that she is to become an unwed mother has sent shock waves through the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The Miami Herald reported, "The father of the unborn child is reportedly David Panton, vice- president of Mellon Ventures in Atlanta, a Rhodes Scholar and Oxford University graduate. Panton is divorced from 1993 Miss World, Lisa Hanna."
Fitzwilliam made her announcement at the Corpus Christi College, a private all-girls institution. Many Trinidadian are upset that she choose an inappropriate medium to make her announcement and that as a role model she was speaking to young impressionable teenage girls.
THE CROWN
Fitzwilliam gained fame in 1998 when she became the second Trinidadian to win the Miss Universe title the first being Janelle Penny Commissioning in 1977. While some Trinidadians are upset that she's an unwed mother, others are upset because of the forum in which she made her announcement.
TRINIDADIAN
The reactions of some Trinidadians in Jamaica are not as harsh as those back home. Lovern Hayes-Brown notes, "People have put her on a pedestal and they don't expect she would do normal regular things. She's Catholic, knows what the beliefs are and attended an all-girls Catholic school St. Joseph's Convent. She went to an all-girls Catholic school to speak about empowering young women and that's where she made her announcement. To them (Catholics), it was like a slap in the face as Catholicism denounces sex before marriage.
"They expect she would do all things good and wholesome and they are disappointed in the decision being made. She's an adult - things happen. Nobody would care if she was just regular Wendy Fitzwilliam and not Wendy Fitzwilliam Miss Universe 1998."
NORRIS TAYLOR
"My view rests on the whole concept of role models. Twenty years ago beauty queens would never be considered role models. The position of role model is being forced on some people and when things happen the ones they are supposed to lead become divided.
In my view she never qualified as a role model. A role model is more than winning a competition its; exemplary behaviour on and off stage, it's achievements and it takes time. I think she's a good person but not a role model. That has to be earned.
BEAUTY CONTEST FRATERNITY
Other beauty queens and personalities in the beauty contest fraternity think this is all much ado about nothing.
* Kingsley Cooper-CEO Pulse International.
"Its 2006 women have the right to choose, and she's no longer the reigning Miss Universe."
* Raquel Wright Miss Jamaica Universe 2005.
"There are certain rules that you have to abide by while you are reigning. Having a child and not being married are Wendy's personal decisions. She has chosen to be an unmarried mother so she shouldn't lose any merit. Yes she is a role model but when people do something to challenge social norms everything good that they have ever done is forgotten.
What a great representative she was for the Caribbean and her country. That's her choice. Who are we to say or dictate that she should be married?".
As to where she announced it, she might have been having personal conflicts about remaining true to herself or being in denial."
* Angelie Martin Miss Jamaica Universe 1994
"That's definitely a personal decision. However, where she made the announcement was a little out of place. People expect the good so they don't applaud when you do it. They see only the bad as the good is expected."
Following Fitzwilliam's victory in 1998 the competition was held in Trinidad in 1999. Miss Botswana then 19-year-old Mpule Kwelagobe won the crown by answering, 'definitely not' in response to the question: What if Miss Universe became pregnant during her reign - in violation of the rules? Her response: "Personally, I think it should not in any way interrupt her duties," she declared to wild applause from the Trinidadian audience. "She should celebrate her femininity."

The mother of the Colac-born woman picked as a finalist for the Miss Universe beauty pageant speaks about her daughter's impending date with destiny.
Emma Newcombe has been selected as one of four Australian finalists vying for the chance to become the official Australian representative for the Miss Universe beauty pageant.
The Miss Universe pageant was begun in 1952 by a clothing company, and then acquired by tycoon Donald Trump in 1996; despite the Australian round of beauty contests being abandoned some years ago the contest received a major boost in publicity when Aussie model Jennifer Hawkins was declared Miss Universe in 2004.
"Actually it was all by surprise. We were in Geelong last Thursday, just shopping for our daughter's wedding, and someone approached her and asked her would she be interested in having a chat... she was a little bit taken aback by it all, she wasn't quite sure. Once she spoke to them and myself and her sister encouraged her, we said have a go Em, have some fun, so she did and that's how it all got started. It's quite amazing how it all got started for her," says mum, Bridgitte Newcombe.
According to Bridgitte, walking through a shopping centre in Geelong was her daughter's first experience with the international glitz and glamour of the Miss Universe competition.
"We had no idea. We didn't know about it or anything. It was quite funny, that day we were in a rush to get down there, and she was in her old sort of clothes, and they said 'no, we want a photograph of you', and she looks at that photo now and says 'oh will you look at me?' Her hair was quite wild... it's quite an amazing story actually," she laughs.
While other countries hold their own contests and finals to find their representative for Miss Universe, Australia chose to stop these contests in 2000, allowing a modelling agency to go about the search instead - which begs the question of how much modelling experience Emma has had.
"No, she's a qualified dental nurse, and had a break from that and went travelling around Queensland for the last ten months, but then came home and she's been helping my husband Rod and I milking cows on the farm for a couple of weeks now," replies Mum. "Sunday she was taken through to Melbourne, where they gave her some modelling skills, and catwalking, and she's adpated to that very well. Sore feet of course... I was talking to her last night and she'll be home this morning, and it is another special day for her today because it is her birthday today, so it's all happening for Emma this week."
The Australian final for Miss Universe is in April - when the people of Colac find out hear whether one of their own has what it takes to win one of the world's oldest beauty pageants.
Sushmita Sen
Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen says her depiction of a village prostitute in a new Bollywood film was emotionally draining and that she couldn't let go of the character even after the shooting was over.
Sen also said she was no longer upset with her newcomer co-star in the film, Anuj Sawhney, who infuriated her by bragging about their reportedly intimate kissing scene, and how there had to be 36 retakes.
The film, Chingari (Ember), a story of how a prostitute fights back to avenge her humiliation and exploitation, was shot in the rural region of Satara in Maharashtra state and is scheduled to be released this month.
It is directed by art house filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi.
"My character is a woman I admire and like me, I would like everyone to take a part of her home with them," Sen was quoted as saying by the trade weekly Screen.
"I began to talk, walk and behave so much like the character Basanti that after the film was over it was difficult to extricate myself from within her."
Sen's character is an illiterate girl who is sold into prostitution at age 14 in a village dominated by a Hindu priest, and gives birth to a child without knowing the identity of the father.

YES, former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins did take dance classes for several years, but she doesn't want you to hold it against her.
Having seen Nikki Webster publicly chastised while appearing on Dancing With The Stars last year, Hawkins is anxious to avoid a similar fate. In pictures: Hawko's brilliant career »
"I did ballet, jazz and tap when I was younger but it wasn't anything too full on," she says.
"You went there after school, it was a social thing. I started when I was five and finished when I was about 14 and then I went into cheerleading."
Fear of being criticised for her dance history was one reason Hawkins declined an offer to sign on for the last series of the celebrity dance-off.
"This time they said, 'You've had a little bit of experience, but so did Chris Bath and Bec (Cartwright), a fair few people have had experience and it's fine'."
Having caught up with the previous three seasons of the high-rating series on DVD, Hawkins is also aware beautiful female contestants have not traditionally fared well with voters.
"People are telling me, 'You could win' and then some people say, 'You're going to get voted off'.
I just tell them, 'I don't want to think about this – you're making my head hurt'," Hawkins laughs.
"If you think about it too much you're just going to drive yourself insane. It's a dancing show, it's not life and death," she adds in her down-to-earth manner.
Now in the midst of three hours of rehearsals each day, Hawkins is relieved to have hit it off with her dance partner Sergey Bolgarskiy, who only moved to Australia from eastern Europe last October.
"I didn't know what to expect but he's got a great sense of humour and he's a really nice, sweet guy," she says.
"And very patient in teaching me. He's not just someone you go to training with, we also go out and have drinks. It's so intense, I'm seeing him more than I'm seeing my family."
Between rehearsals, Hawkins is squeezing in the occasional voiceover and postproduction commitment for The Great Outdoors.
"I love it and they're a really good crew to work with," she says of her first year on the travel program. The former Newcastle Knights cheerleader admits she is still coming to terms with how much life has changed since being crowned Miss Universe in 2004.
"There is a transition," she says. "You go from being overseas to being based in Sydney – which I love but I have to get used to sitting still. Usually when I go back to Newcastle, Mum's like, 'Calm down'."
Despite her new fame and globe-trotting career, Hawkins is still together with long-time boyfriend Jake Wall.
"It's good because he's so calm," she says. "I come back and it's like, 'I can just be normal'. It's hard to explain but we sort of level each other out."

EFE -

As well as modelling the Lovable underwear range, the 22-year-old will be contributing ideas for products and campaigns.
As part of the agreement, Hawkins will work alongside the design team and source fabrics when overseas.
"Lovable is a cute, girly and fun brand," she said.
"It's great because I get to give my input into the brand -- that's the main reason I agreed to do it."
She admits to relishing the opportunity to simultaneously influence and wear the products.
"It's going to have a cheeky element as well," she said.
Unlike rival brands that prefer a sultry, glamorous image, Lovable aims to be a feminine and fun "girl next door" label.
Drawing on her experience, Hawkins is getting into her role by issuing important advice for women on lingerie shopping.
"I think the biggest mistake girls make is not getting measured," she said.
"I went and found out I should have been wearing a different size.
"You shouldn't be able to feel your bra."
It looks set to be a busy year for Hawkins, who is one of the contestants on the new season of Channel 7's Dancing with the Stars.
She is also filming around the world as a presenter for The Great Outdoors.

He aprendido muchas cosas
