Miss World contestants try their hand at modelling

112 contestants from this year’s Miss World competition have modelled for Miss World Top Model in Johannesburg South Africa, showcasing the ‘Gold Creative’ designs.

The dresses were designed by seven South African fashion designers including: Diamond Face Couture, Haroun Hansrot, JJ Schoeman, Kluk CGdT, Marc & Michael, RJKay and Thula Sindi.

Miss Mexico - Perla Beltran Acosta - won the Miss World Top Model contest and she now joins the four contestants who will be fast tracked to the semi finals, Miss Japan (Miss World Sportswoman), Miss Sierra Leone, Miss Canada (joint tie winners of World Talent Show) and Miss Gibraltar (Miss World Beach Beauty).

Second in Miss World Fashion was Miss Vietnam, Tran Thi Huong Giang with Miss Martinique Ingrid Litter in third spot.

The talented Miss Sierra Leone - Mariatu Kargbo - wearing her country’s designer dress by Danny Tabet, was overcome with joy as she won an Award for Miss World Fashion designer of the year.

"I want to cry it is so great for me because it was like my dream, my dream is coming true” she said.

Mother who sacrificed for world beauty

Nov 29, 2009 12:00 AM | By Santham Pillay
When Miss India 2009 Pooja Chopra was born, her mother had to choose between her marriage and her children.

Chopra, in Durban this week as part a national road show ahead of the Miss World pageant next month, said her mother, Neera, made the tough decision to start a new life away from the man who could not accept a second daughter.

Boys in India are traditionally regarded as future bread-winners, while girls are considered a financial burden because their families must pay dowries to get them married.

"I don't know how a woman could have been so strong to take a 20-day-old baby and a seven-year-old and walk out of a home with nothing," said the 24-year-old beauty from Pune.

"The last I heard of my father was that he had married again and has two sons."

Chopra, a commerce graduate, lifted the title of Miss India World earlier this year. She believes it was her answer to a question posed by the judges that landed her crown.

"My question was: 'If you were to meet God, what question would you ask?' I said: 'God, I see you in my mother's eyes, and they say you cannot be everywhere, that's why you have given us all a mother. I am lucky enough that I have my mother, but there are so many people in this world who don't. Why?'"

Chopra downplays her modest 1.73m height, saying it was not as important as it seemed. "It just goes to show you that it is not important how tall you are, but how tall your personality is."

She believes that competitions like Miss World are necessary to create platforms for young women. "Here one person can become an icon from the good she does."

Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar agrees.

"There is this concept of fame in a can. But this platform provides the opportunity to create a global ambassador who is a good, wholesome role model," she said.

The 1.81m-tall model is hoping to impress the judges in the pageant finals, saying she would love to do well. "It would be a victory for South Africa."

The finals will be held in the Gallagher Convention Centre on December 12.

Miss Model of the World est française, cocorico !

Miss Model of the World est française, cocorico !

Miss Model of the World ça ne vous dit rien ?

Voici.

Myer designers attending the G'Day LA gala include Jayson Brunsdon, Camilla and Marc Freeman, Wayne Cooper, Nicola Finetti, and Aurelio Costarella.

Myer communcations manager Mitch Catlin said "This is a really exciting opportunity for Myer to showcase its Australian designers in an international forum."

Miss France is still going strong

Connexion edition: December 2009

MISS France is a big draw, attracting nine million viewers for last year’s final on TF1 - making it the second most popular “entertainment” show of the year on France’s most watched TV channel.

This year’s final comes from Nice on December 5, featuring Robbie Williams as the star guest and a judging panel of French celebrities including Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Miss World – which was started in the UK in 1951 – once also attracted strong audiences in its home country, but now suffers from a non-PC image there while thriving elsewhere. It was dropped from mainstream TV in 1988 and the final is no longer held in the UK. Miss France, which dates from 1921, seems to suffer from no such qualms among the French.

The finals are held each year in December to crown the “Miss” for the following year. Miss France 2009 is Miss Albigeois Midi-Pyrénées, Chloë Mortaud, a mixed-race girl with French and American nationality who was dubbed “Miss Obama” by the press.

For 2010 the show on TF1 will once again be presented by Jean-Pierre Foucault, along with la dame au chapeau Geneviève de Fontenay, who has been involved in the contest since the 1950s (see the December issue of Connexion for an exclusive interview with her)

Miss France presides at events during her year in office and gets a salary and use of a smart Paris flat as well as other perks. She is eligible to compete in Miss World and its American international rival Miss Universe.

Candidates (37 this year) are the regional finalists from the 22 regions of France métropolitaine (the "Hexagon" and Corsica) as well as overseas teritories.

In the week before the final a preselection jury will pick 12 semi-finalists who will be announced on the final night. During the evening they will be whittled down to five girls, who will become Miss France and her four dauphines (deputies), with voting weighted half to the panel of judges on the night and half to the spectators. This year, for the first time, only the spectators will pick Miss France from the last five.

The candidates had a week relaxing in Martinique, before heading for the capital of the Côte d’Azur where they have been practising their modelling and getting ready.

The candidates can be seen at: www.tf1.fr/miss-france/les-miss/

Who can take part?

To take part in Miss France you have to be: Born female, French, 18–25, at least 1.70cm (5ft7in) tall, unmarried and unpacsed, not cohabiting, not divorced, childless, with a clean criminal record, not use any “artifices” like a wig or coloured contact lenses, with no tattoos or piercings (other than ears) and you should never have posed for “partially or totally” nude photographs in “dubious” poses or outfits. There are local, departmental and regional heats.

History and controversies

1920: Agnès Souret from the Midi-Pyrénées is the first Plus Belle Femme de France (the forerunner of Miss France)

1930: This year’s winner, Yvette Labrousse, later marries the Aga Khan

1941–1946: Competition stops during the Second World War

1956: Controversy over the choice of Miss Côte d’Azur at the final at the Palais de la Méditéranée in Nice. Following protests, she is replaced two days later by Miss French Africa

1983: Isabelle Turpault, Miss Paris, loses her title after posing naked in a magazine

1987: The final is shown on TV for the first time. Winner Nathalie Marquay appeared in the show La Ferme Célébrités in 2005 and married TV presenter Jean-Pierre Pernaut in 2007

2001: (False) rumours that Miss France, Elodie Gossuin (now a regional councillor), used to be a man during elections for Miss Universe

2002: This year’s winner, Sylvie Tellier, went on to become head of the Société Miss France

2004: Lucie Degletagne temporarily loses her title after posing in Playboy; regains it after public apologies

2006: Controversy after Miss Languedoc wins despite being the fifth choice of the public. Jury president Laetitia Hallyday is also from the Languedoc-Roussillon

2007: The public is again upset that its favourite by a big margin (a deaf candidate) is passed over, due to the jury having two-thirds of the vote – the system is changed to 50/50 the following year

2008: Geneviève de Fontenay refuses to be seen at events around France with Miss Réunion Valérie Bègue after risqué photos of her (taken years before the competition) are published by a magazine. They include one of her posing on a crucifix in a swimming pool and another in which she is licking spilled yoghurt suggestively. Later, a different set is published by another magazine. She keeps her title after the public and the Société Miss France show support, but is unable to compete in Miss World and Miss Universe or appear at the next year’s regional heats.

2009: Controversy over voting again – winner Chloë Mortaud is only third favourite with the public and a jury member claims to have been influenced in her choice by the production team. An unsuccessful legal challenge over Miss Mortaud’s original election as Miss Albigeois Midi-Pyrénées – which would have disqualified her as Miss France - is launched by a rival who says her family used local influence to help her win

How is the competition run?

Louis de Fontenay (real name Poirot, de Fontenay being, he stated, a pseudonym he used in the Resistence) took up the running of the competition in 1954, as president of the Comité Miss France.

His partner Geneviève and son Xavier took over the running of it after his death in 1981. In 2002 they sold the television and commercial rights to Endemol, who now run La Société Miss France as a subsidiary.

Geneviève remains president of the comité, which now mainly supervises the committees that run the regional heats and “supplies the candidates” for the final.

She also helps the société to organise the final and helps present the show, and she is paid a salary by them as “directrice adjointe” (assistant director).

Xavier de Fontenay was the managing director of the société until 2008 when Sylvie Tellier, 2002’s Miss France, took over.

Mr de Fontenay is no longer involved and has recently written a book of memoirs about Miss France, in which he accuses Endemol of trying to sideline his mother of whom he says they are afraid and says Ms Tellier is their “puppet.”

About Geneviève de Fontenay

Known as la dame au chapeau as she is never seen without a hat, Ms de Fontenay is known for her traditional moral views.

Originally from Moselle, she became model and was elected Miss Elegance in Paris in 1957. She has been involved with running Miss France since 1954.

She has been embroiled in controversies including the magazine photos scandal relating to the 2008 winner (see above) and recently having to pay a €500 fine after calling the 1961 winner, Luce Auger, a salope (slut) in the press.

Ms Auger, supporting Miss Bègue, had alleged the Fontenays asked candidates in the sixties to pose topless, a claim which Ms de Fontenay said made her feel “revolted and scandalised.”

Auger was supported by Michel le Parmentier, head of a rival beauty contest organisation.

She supported Lutte Ouvrière leader Arlette Laguiller for the 2002 presidential elections and Ségolène Royal in 2007.

Vencedora “importada” gera polêmica no Miss Brasil-USA 2009 em New Jersey

image A vencedora Marcela Granato, 21 anos, natural de Ponte Nova (MG), brilhou no salão de festas do Hotel Robert Treat, em Newark - NJ

Leonardo Ferreira

Ele pagou a franquia está aí, US$ 1 mil.

The preparations started in London and the girls are currently in South Africa. They have also visited Abu Dhabi where Jelena had a successful casting for a very important fashion week.
“Our first destination was magnificent Abu Dhabi where we arrived for the opening of the “Yah” hotel and opening of the fashion week. I was delighted because I passed casting and was included in the group of twenty girls who will do a fashion week in Abu Dhabi organized by Miss World Beauty Pageant,” says Jelena.
“We arrived in South Africa on November 14. There has been very good media coverage, there is even an article written about me published in a local newspaper. People here are fantastic, cheerful, they are always singing, playing, dancing,” our beauty points out not hiding her excitement.
Although they have numerous obligations during the preparations, Jelena says that they don’t find it difficult. She mentions a visit to “Shamwari Game Reserve” as a very interesting experience.
“I was fascinated by so many animals in one place. I spent most of the time with a little elephant and it liked my attention,” says Jelena who is also very good at sports. She managed to score a goal during a football game.
“After the visit to the Game Reserve, sports games were organized at the Nelson Mandela stadium. I have been selected to be among top ten athletes and I am the only one in the group who scored a goal. I competed in running and football,” says Jelena.

Miss World Talent Show has two winners

Miss World Talent Show has two winners

In an unprecedented move, the six judges of the 2009 Miss World Talent show held at the Victory Theatre, yesterday, made two ladies joint-winners- securing them each a spot in the finale

Miss Yanbing Ma (Canada), who performed an Opera piece and Miss Mariatu Kargbo (Sierra Leone) a traditional dance, scored points for the December 12 event to be held at the Gallagher Convention Centre.

"I feel very proud, of course. It's a good way to inspire under-privileged people with our talent," Kargbo said.

"I'm very excited and proud. I don’t think my country has ever had a talent winner, so I’m very happy to be able to show some of my talent," said a beaming Ma.

The two ladies will again showcase their respective talents in front of an audience of over a billion during the final evening.

Musical Director for this year's pageant, Mike Dixon, who also choreographed the Princess Diana concert in Wembley, and "We will rock you", spoke glowingly about the organisation of the show.

"This has been a really impressive afternoon, especially from the girls, who improved dramatically during the rehearsals.

"If Simon Cowell thinks his bunch is special, then we've just showed that Miss World has also a talented bunch of ladies with a purpose," added Dixon, who's worked on 16 previous Miss World pageants.

While the judges, among them designer J.J Schoeman, were huddled to decide the winner, the cast of Umoja gave a colourful 10-minute show.

"We're having a wonderful time; it's been a week already. It's an opportunity for the ladies to learn about each other's cultures," Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar said.

Korea's Joo Ri Kim (2nd), Norway's Sara Skjoldnes (3rd), and Australia's Sophie Lavers (4th) also shared the stage with the winners.

The ladies will be in Durban today (Monday) for the bikini contest, where another will secure a spot in the top 15.

Johannesburg Tourism Company's Lindiwe Mahlangu, who was also part of the judging panel: "Africa's time, and especially Johannesburg, has come. We are really proud, but also ready to host more events of this magnitude."
