    We’re World class

THERE have been 11 Miss Scotlands since the title was relaunched in 2000 and they all have TWO things in common.

    They're ALL beautiful.
And ALL of them reckon the highlight of their reign was competing in the amazing Miss World contest.
There have been four Miss World venues since 2000.
The contest has been held five times in China, three times in South Africa, twice in London and once in Warsaw, Poland. And our girls have LOVED them all.
Gorgeous KATHARINE BROWN, 24, our Miss Scotland 2009, remembers the sights, smells and tastes of South Africa.
She took on 120 of the most beautiul girls on the planet for the coveted Miss World title.
Professional tennis coach Katharine, of Dunblane, Perthshire, said: "It was the most amazing experience of my life.

Brit stars ... Nieve Jennings with Miss Northern Ireland

"We travelled from London to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for three days, then onto Johannesburg for the most incredible reception and the final setting for Miss World. "We were on and off planes all the time, being escorted around by big beefy security guards and we stayed in hotels like palaces.
"We were on show every single day at one event after another, and then there were the rehearsals for Miss World.
"We were never alone. There was always 120 of us going everywhere, and we were treated like princesses.
"Everywhere we went there was the wonderful smell of spices and we were offered the most amazing food.
"Even now when I think back, it all seems surreal.
"It could get tense at times, but then something would happen and we'd all fall about laughing.
"You need a good sense of humour to get through this. There's always only ever going to be one Miss World and every girl has the potential - they're all so beautiful. My mum came to South Africa for the final and it was so thrilling for us.
"I'll never forget the way that everyone calls you by your country.
"So I was Scotland, not Katharine, and I was so very proud.

"I came home with the Miss UK title, so I was extremely happy. "The next Miss Scotland is in for the time of her life."
Stunning STEPHANIE WILLEMSE, 22, was just 19 when she waltzed off with the Miss Scotland 2008 title.
Model Stephanie, of Glasgow, said: "The Miss World experience was just fantastic.
"It was in Johannesburg and for me the best bit was the final night.
"We were all on stage when these children walked on carrying flags of the countries represented.
"When the Scottish flag was carried past I felt very emotional.
"I was thinking, that's for me - that's for Scotland. I felt so hugely honoured. When the judges were about to announce the winner, I was thinking, 'If it's me I'll pass out.' But it was the Russian contestant Ksenia Sukhinova who won.
"I was thrilled because she had been my pal all the way through and she was gorgeous."
Dancer and stunning model NIEVE JENNINGS, 23, of Glasgow, was crowned Miss Scotland in 2007.

She said: "Miss World was the best experience of my life. "Taking my Miss Scotland title and showcasing Scotland to the rest of the world was a real privilege.
"I was even asked by the Miss World people to open a huge Chinese TV show being broadcast to 1.6billion people.
"I sang Loch Lomond, which I recorded as a charity single and all of China fell in love with my song. I was asked to sing it everywhere."
Lovely NICOLA JOLLY, 29, of Inverbervie, Aberdeenshire, became a TV presenter after winning Miss Scotland in 2003.
She said: "I was in Sanya, China, for the Miss World pageant and it was amazing. We had a lovely chaperone who was a good laugh and I have vivid memories of snowball fights at the Great Wall Of China.
"It was freezing - something like minus 20 degrees - and we were all building snowmen and having fun.
"It was all a bit mad because we were up early in the morning and still working right through until late at night.
"We had a few days in Hong Kong but the last 10 days were spent in Sanya relaxing and preparing for the finals.

"We were all given books and all the girls signed them. "It's surreal that I have messages from Miss Swaziland and Miss Namibia.
"And I came home with the Miss UK title too.
"It's an experience I wouldn't have missed for the world."
Pretty AISLING FRIEL won her Miss Scotland title in 2005 and still finds it hard to believe that she competed in Miss World in China.

Aisling, 28, of Glasgow, said: "I don't think I realised just how big a deal Miss World was when I was actually there - but now when I look back it blows me away.
"I came second in the talent section with my Celtic dancing.
"The winner was Miss British Virgin Islands who was the most fantastic singer. But coming second out of 120 girls was really something.
"We were told that millions would be watching on TV around the world. I suddenly realised that I was about to go up on stage and dance in my bikini.
"I was almost paralysed with nerves. My mum and sister had come out to cheer me on and it was only knowing they were in the audience that held me together. I'm now part of this unique band of girls and we all keep in touch.
"It's so lovely to look back at all my photos and I still pinch myself to realise that yes, that was ME!"

Miss World Ltd woos Tobago to host pageant 'Miss T&T money woes'

    By Elizabeth Williams Tobago Bureau

Story Created: Feb 23, 2011 at 2:47 AM ECT

Story Updated: Feb 23, 2011 at 2:47 AM ECT

Even as Tobago is being looked at as the next island to host the Miss World pageant, controversy brewed yesterday as the mother of reigning Trinidad and Tobago/World Davia Chambers said her daughter was being poorly treated by local pageant officials.

Lauren Groome made the complaint at the Scarborough Esplanade, during an official visit from Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills, Miss World runner-up Emma Waraeus and chairman and owner of Miss World Ltd Julia Morley, who is scouting Tobago as a possible host for the Miss World competition in December.

Groome made her complaint to Minister of Tobago Development Vernella Alleyne-Toppin and Minister of the People Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh, who had to intervene to calm her down.

She said her daughter allegedly had been having trouble in accessing a scholarship fund allocation, prize money and other benefits she was entitled to, having won the right to represent the country.

Morley and her delegation were not within earshot when Groome made her complaint.

Afterwards, Alleyne-Toppin said in any organisation, there will be people who are not satisfied with the arrangements. She said she would do all in her power to assist in rectifying the problem to ensure Chambers is ready for the pageant.

"I am standing in here because the Prime Minister has asked me to meet with Ms Morley and the team and to make sure we have talks towards the hosting of the Miss World pageant. We do not want the Miss World pageant to come to Tobago in a cloud," Alleyne-Toppin said.

Speaking afterwards, local franchise holder Michael Raghunana, said he was excited Trinidad and Tobago was being looked at as a possible host for the Miss World pageant.

"The situation is Julia Morley asked for a private meeting. I was honoured we had the meeting; it was successful...and the situation is here, at least to consider Trinidad and Tobago hosting Miss World."

The delegation will be in Trinidad today.

click on pic to zoom inBEAUTIES AND THE CHIEF: THA Chief Secretary Orville London with Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills (right) and first runner-up, Miss Botswana Emma Wareu...WITH THE blessings of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Tobago may be the next venue for Miss World 2011, notwithstanding an ugly and embarrassing shouting incident involving a female relative of this country’s representative to the Miss World 2010 pageant.

Minister of Tobago Development Vernella Alleyne-Toppin yesterday said the sister-isle could get the nod after co-chair of the Miss World Pageant Julia Morley and an entourage including reigning Miss World, American Alexandria Mills and first runner-up Miss Botswana Emma Wareus, paid a courtesy call on Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Orville London yesterday morning and also toured several tourist attractions and facilities.

Tobago’s chances of hosting such an international event was dealt a severe blow when a woman claiming to be the mother of Miss TT Davia Chambers, met Alleyne-Toppin and in the presence of reigning Miss World Alexandria Mills, first runner-up Emma Wareus and the Miss World Pageant co-chair Julia Morley, and angrily demanded to know why her daughter Davia Chambers — TT’s representative at the Miss World 2010 pageant — was not invited to be part of the local team of officials to accompany the Miss World pageant organisers to different areas in Tobago.

As the Miss World entourage including Mills, Wareus and Morely looked on, Alleyne-Toppin tried her best to placate the angry woman while Chambers stood nearby with her back turned as she adjusted her make-up.

In the end, Miss World Alexanderia Mills led away Chambers and spoke to her in the company of Morley.

The reigning Miss World later led Chambers into a nearby Audi sedan and continued speaking with her.

“We are looking at TT, with Tobago as the main venue, for Miss World 2011. We have had our first talks. Miss Morley and the rest of her team spent some time touring the island. They visited the new Scarborough Hospital and they were later taken to the Buccoo Reef and other sites,” Alleyne-Toppin said. The entourage is expected in Trinidad today where they will tour several venues.

Part of today’s schedule includes dinner with Persad-Bissessar at the Prime Minister’s Residence and Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s, where Toppin said a final decision would be made. The minister, who admitted she was very excited about the prospect of the sister isle hosting the international event, said they made no request for the pageant to be held in this country, but said the offer was made by Morley and the Miss World organisation.

“If given the opportunity we would say yes right now, but it is the Prime Minister who has the final say, and she will be meeting with them tomorrow (today),” she said.

The minister said hosting the event would be a big leap for Tobago’s tourism, infrastructure and especially for their marketing thrust

    13 Dec, 2009

The 2009 Miss World event, hosted by the City of Johannesburg, was a waste of money, charges an internal report compiled by an ANC-led task group.

The Mail & Guardian has seen the confidential report, which criticises the metropolitan council’s motivation for splashing out R90-million on the pageant in December 2009. "The motivation has not been backed by concrete evidence, including a breakdown of ancillary cost and a cost-benefit analysis," said the report.

"[The task team] also finds the explanation that the event would contribute to 'advertising' the city as a preferred safe destination is not convincing, given the city's history in hosting major world events. The fact that the event happened just months before the city was to play the nucleus role in the Fifa World Cup makes a mockery of the motivation."

The findings come as a surprise, given that the council repeatedly and publicly defended its hosting of the pageant when the cost was discovered. The report was written in early 2010 by a task team comprising ANC provincial secretary David Makhura, regional secretary Pule Mlambo and local government experts Pascal Moloi and Mogomotsi Mogodiri.

"The task team is disappointed that the Johannesburg Tourism Company invested all its two-year allocation from the bidding fund on a single event. The strain on the city's finances and the negative publicity it attracted could have been avoided."

The report also mentions problems in council spending on Soccer City prior to the Fifa World Cup. "The original estimates were 'thumbsucks' and did not anticipate the world economic crisis," says the report. "The city took a bold move to fund the R3,2-billion. … The entire 2010 Soccer City 'deal' requires review."

The report takes issue also with the council's exposure to the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit System. "The establishment of the company took too long and as we meet today, Scania, the bus supplier, is owed R400-million. The city's capacity has been stretched."

Criticising the council's leadership and management in general, the report finds that more planning and feasibility studies should have been conducted for major projects such as Soccer City and the BRT instead of mere scoping exercises. "We took serious risks without a risk-management strategy," it says.

A member of the ANC who worked closely with the task team told the M&G: "No one has been held accountable by this report. The city wants to forget about it, but the billing issues are the issues the report is talking to."

Jennifer Hawkins is getting only halfway there for now

GETAWAY has been cut in half by Channel 9 to boost ratings - but bosses have promised it won't stay like that forever.
Last week's debut featuring Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins was a 30-minute episode for the first time in many years. But Nine's director of programming, Michael Healy, said the decision was a "test" to give the channel more flexibility.
Getaway is one of Nine's most popular shows, regularly pulling in 1.2 million viewers.
"We will see how the 30-minute version goes," Healy told industry magazine Media Week
"Traditionally, Getaway launched after Easter, but for the last few years we introduced it at the beginning of the year and it will probably flip back to an hour at some point."

A step closer to Miss World?

    Image

    by Giovanni Paolo J. Yazon
FINALLY, the local franchise to the oldest-surviving international beauty pageant is back in the hands of a Filipino!
Miss World Organisation chief executive Julia Morley flew in to Manila to personally award the exclusive licensee agreement of Miss World Philippines to wellness guru and World for All Foundation chairman Cory Quirino. And this milestone in Philippine pageantry was witnessed by members of the press at the Rizal Ballroom of Makati Shangri-La Hotel recently.
She was, of course, accompanied by reigning Miss World Alexandria Mills of the United States and first princess Emma Wareus of Botswana. “It was the first time in the 60-year history of the Miss World Organisation to visit the Philippines,” Morley enthused, “and the awarding of license to Cory [Quirino] was one of the highlights of our tour.”
The pageant, established by her late husband, Eric Morley, now celebrates its sixth decade of “Beauty with a Purpose.” It has raised more than $400 million in support of children’s charities across the globe to date. Also present at the event were Evangeline Pascual (first runner-up in 1973) and Ruffa Gutierrez (second princess and Asia’s Queen of Beauty in 1993).
During their almost two-day stay in the country, Morley, Miss World events director Stephen Douglas, Miss World-Asia consultant Paul Lee, Mills, Wareus alongside Quirino visited Ospital ng Makati—to which the organization “adopted” two heart patients—the Philippine General Hospital in Malate and Tuloy Street Children’s Foundation in Muntinlupa City.
“My heart bled when we went to PGH,” she said in an interview with Standard Today. “Upon seeing the depressed situations of children [in PGH] I realized the need to give your country a lot of opportunities. The Organisation vows to raise funds for the impoverished and sick patients [in PGH] for antibiotics, additional medical equipment and even for their ventilation.”
    End of Stella’s regime
The Philippines first competed in Miss World back in 1966, with a charming Muslim princess named Emraida Kelly Kiram (her Christian name is Vivien Lee Austria) as the maiden representative. From that year to 1976, local bets were chosen through the Miss Republic of the Philippines tilt. The franchise was transferred to Mutya ng Pilipinas from 1977 to 1991, then to Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. from 1992 to 2010.
The country hasn’t won a Miss World crown up till now. The closest we have achieved was Pascual’s second-place finish in 1973. Crowned beauty Marjorie Wallace, the first winner from the United States, was forced to resign after 104 days due to her failure to cope up with fame and engagements in series of high-living exploits with prominent music and sports figures that brought disgrace to her title. Only the duties—and not the Miss World crown—were offered to Pascual to which she “respectfully declined” in favor of a budding movie career.
The unexpected changing of guards for the Miss World franchise gave rise to previous speculations that Morley was indeed “unhappy” with Araneta’s scheme of choosing Filipina delegates. A pageant web site moderator who requested anonymity disclosed: “Julia [Morley] really wanted Madam [Stella Marquez de Araneta] to conduct a separate contest. She didn’t like a smorgasbord search—a grand coronation night that produces multiple winners—that Araneta’s been practicing since 1970. It was in 2007 that she purportedly gave BPCI an ultimatum… if Stella’s ‘system’ would go on and on, the Miss World franchise would be revoked from her.”
In a separate interview with the Colombian matriarch during the preliminary screening of Binibining Pilipinas 2011’s top 100 candidates at the Gateway Suites, Araneta refused to elaborate why she lost the Miss World franchise. “It feels so sad that we lost it [it was with us for 19 years], but we have to move on and keep doing what we’re doing.”
Morley explained: “The Miss World Organization has a lot of projects and I cannot do them if it doesn’t have an individual competition. During the years Stella ran [her pageant] with Miss World, I know that she really did a very good job! [However], I want to have my own contest, so I can be more involved, because I want to stand alone for the Filipino children.” She hoped that Araneta would not be offended by her decision to rescind the Miss World license from BPCI.
    Cory administration
“It all began when I attended a convention in Kuala Lumpur late last year. Paul Lee approached me and asked, ‘Cory would you be interested to handle the Miss World Philippines tilt?’ I said oh, I didn’t know that you’re looking for somebody… I was told that Morley wanted the Miss World Philippines pageant to be run independently—to have its own identity and personality,” Quirino revealed as to how she became the national director of Miss World Philippines. “I want to challenge myself. So I said yes, why not? If you think that I am the right lady for the job, [then] I will accept!” She emphasized that socio-civic undertakings will be a core activity of the contest.
“I will be hands-on in choosing our representative for the next Miss World contest. We will conduct the pageant sometime in August para naman makabuwelo kami. It’s going to be a meticulous process. A candidate must have a big heart and compassion [toward the poor people]. If she doesn’t have that love for her country and for her countrymen, she would not qualify. But I know we will be able find the best one!”
Even a poor, barrio lass, she said, can participate. “It [being poor] is not a hindrance to succeed. We will encourage the poorest of the poor to join our search.” She, Morley and her party as well as Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim already discussed the possible staging of Miss World tilt in Manila come 2013. “It’s my biggest dream for now. It’s a very huge responsibility, but with the help of God and of our countrymen, why not?”
Quirino wished that Araneta would not take offense at her, too. “Malapit po kami ng dating organizer… I have high respect for Nene (Jorge Araneta, Stella’s husband), he is the godfather of my child. I have a clean heart. I have a great affection for Stella. We haven’t had that talk yet, but that’s one of my plans, I will visit them soon.”
Would a Filipina’s chance of winning the elusive Miss World crown be greater than ever now that senora Stella is ultimately out and Cory is at the helm? We will have to watch out for that.

Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete is L’Oréal Paris’s new face

L’Oréal Paris has announced that Jimena ‘Ximena’ Navarrete, 22, the reigning Miss Universe, is its new face.
Of Mexican origin, Navarrete follows in the footsteps of Cheryl Cole, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé Knowles, Gwen Stefani, Scarlett Johansson and Aishwarya Rai.
While not the first L’Oréal Paris spokesmodel of Latin American extraction, Navarrete helps boost the brand’s profile in that region.
Navarrete was originally crowned Nuestra Belleza México in 2009, which entitled her to enter the Miss Universe competition in 2010.
Earlier Miss Universes and Miss Worlds have won endorsement contracts.
Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins was offered in 2006 the contract to be the spokeswoman for Myer, an Australian department store chain. The four-year contract was renewed, early, in 2009 for another four years.
Maju Mantilla, Miss World 2004, was offered a contract with Pantene last year, and can be seen in commercials in South America (see below).
Former Miss Universe, Lorraine Downes, 46, was strict about which brands to endorse, choosing to put on her skin only what has been proven to be 100 per cent natural.
The 1983 title-holder is currently the spokeswoman for New Zealand brand Living Nature.
She commented, ‘I looked around the world and discovered there was only a handful of truly natural brands, one of which was Living Nature, from my homeland.’

Egypt turmoil upsets ‘Miss Germany’ contest

Egypt turmoil upsets ‘Miss Germany’ contest
Historic demonstrations in Egypt may not have toppled President Hosni Mubarak yet, but they did claim one glamorous victim: preparations for the “Miss Germany” beauty pageant. Twenty-four candidates aged 17 to 24 for the coveted title arrived in the Red Sea tourist resort of Hurghada last week for 10 days of catwalk and photoshoot training, topping up their suntans and relaxing. But now, they are going home to continue their training in their distinctly chillier homeland, because their families are worried, a spokeswoman for the contest told AFP. This is despite the fact there is no sign of the unrest on the sun-kissed beaches of the Red Sea. “It’s completely calm here. There are no problems, everything is running to plan,” Klemmer said. afp
