Miss Universe Botswana postponed

Wednesday, 30 June 2010 00:00
The Miss Universe Botswana beauty pageant that was slated for June 25, has been postponed to July 10, Safie Sekgwa of Mos Syde Group, who are organising the pageant, have announced.
“The Miss Universe 2010 grand finale is scheduled for Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC). The pageant was initially slated for last Friday, but we had to reschedule it because no network/broadcaster was going to be available. We understand Botswana Television (Btv) has an agreement with FIFA to broadcast all the World Cup games.” Asked if this does not contradict the global pageant’s deadline for name submissions, Sekgwa said they had pleaded with the Miss Universe pageant organisers to give them an extension due to the circumstances beyond their control and it was granted which means they will have to have handed in the name of the Botswana representative by July 11. He reassured Batswana that the show will definitely take place. He further stated that this Saturday (July 03), they will have a launch party at Cresta Lodge, Gaborone.
A statement from the company says that Miss Universe is an economic driver and as a way of empowering the contestants with economic knowledge, the girls will be visiting DTC Botswana next week to learn about Botswana diamond production - from raw to finished product.

Larissa crowned by Miss World

by Alice Mascarenhas
Larissa Dalli was crowned Miss Gibraltar 2010 on Saturday night at the Alameda Open Air Theatre by Miss World 2009 Kaiane Aldorino. The audience was witness to a very special moment as she made history and passed on her Gibraltar Crown, wearing her own Miss World Crown, to Larissa who first entered as a contestant when she was just 17. Five years on she felt mature enough to try again, and could not believe she had indeed struck gold. This 22 year old Fund Administrator, who also took the cup for Miss Catwalk in a dazzling, fast moving show, will reign for the next year and represent Gibraltar at the Miss World Beauty Pageant in Vietnam this year knowing dreams can come true.

Larissa told a packed theatre whilst holding on to her crown: "This is a most wonderful feeling, I promise to make Gibraltar proud."

Ten young women competed for the title this year, runner up and First Princess was 19 year old Jemma Rocca (contestant No.9), and second Princess was 22 year old Leandra Howe (contestant No.1).

The Gibraltar Chronicle Cup for Miss Best Interview was won by Tina Sawyer (Contestant No. 5), who also took the cup for Miss Photogenic. Miss Friendship chosen by the contestants themselves was won by Contestant No.8. Kaduiska Hollands.

Moments later Miss Gibraltar 2010 told the Chronicle she could not believe she had won and that she was actually sharing the stage with Miss World.

"It is amazing. It's unbelievable. I never ever imagined this would be me. I just have no words."

As she stepped up in front of Miss World Kaiane Aldorino after Culture Minister Edwin Reyes had presented her with her glass trophy and presented her sash, Larissa said she had felt like crying and shouting. With a tear in her eye she added: "Wow, how could I be next to Miss World. If I am lucky I could do well in Miss World as well. Who knows!"

Although the crowning of a new Miss Gibraltar is always the highlight of this annual show, there is no denying that for many the highlight came moments after the interval, when Miss World 2009 Kaiane Aldorino gracefully walked onto the stage to the wonderful sounds of 'One Moment in Time' performed live by Corrine Cooper and the Santos Choir. This whole section was beautifully designed and directed as a video screen showed scenes of her crowning moments; a year ago when she was crowned Miss Gibraltar at the Alameda Open Air Theatre, and then in South Africa in December when she was crowned Miss World, as she narrated her experiences of the last six months as the reigning Miss World, her travels and her charity work around the world. Without a shadow of doubt it proved a proud and emotional moment not just for her but for everyone in the theatre, as the audience rose to its feet, giving her a long five minute standing ovation. Kaiane as always was ready with a message for her fellow Gibraltarians.

"I am feeling great. It's good to be on stage after one year. It's gone by so quickly, and the excitement, and I am home and that's the best part of it," she commented when interviewed by comperes Christian Santos and Davina Barbara.

Acknowledging being crowned Miss World had changed her life in many ways and given her the chance to travel to many countries she had never imagined, met so many people and done amazing charity work, she added: "It has been a amazing year. I have learnt a lot, gained a lot of world knowledge and I feel blessed. It's the opportunity of a lifetime."

But despite all she has done she admitted the best moment was her return home last December days after she was crowned Miss World and the welcomed she received.

"I am travelling a lot and I always tell people what a special place Gibraltar is. I would not live anywhere else, Gibraltar is my home, we are like a big family and the day I came back home was like the perfect demonstration."

This year's judges were a charming Miss England 2009 Katrina Hodge (Combat Barbie), and an equally charming Mr England 2009 Andreas Kattou, TV and Radio personality Vivien Creegor, Director of EM Magazine Ruth Deane, and Miss England Organiser, and back for a second time as the chairman of the judges Angela Beasley.

The show proved a success and celebrated the role of women in society through the musical decades of the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties, with some colourful, vivid and thrilling dance routines.

With a silver backdrop the opening number celebrated the Modern Divas with dancing from the three main dance groups in the show: Transitions Dance Academy, The Gibraltar Academy of Dance and Urban Dance Group. As the 30 strong troupe of dancers joined together - it was stunning to see so many dancing to the same tune - they tore away at the silver material to reveal the 10 contestants in black outfits with silver headwear, on a raised platform used effectively throughout the night. From this instance the show just got better and better. Each dance group providing just the right element of dance especially in 'The King and Queen of Pop' with an upbeat Michael Jackson (Gibraltar Academy of Dance) and Madonna (Transitions Dance Academy) extravaganza, in a raunchy 'Broken Heels' (Urban Dance Group) accompanying a very competent Tiffany Deriveau, and in the memorable 'Make It Motown' (Gibraltar Academy of Dance) spectacular with some fine singing again from Tiffany, our own Corianne Brooks, and Operacion Triunfo finalist Chipper!

In the evening wear parade the contestants all shone brightly under a warm full moon where it was great to see back on stage Aaron and Gina Caballero, in a very precise and dramatic routine with some amazing lifts.

The show produced by Santos Productions, was pieced together by comperes Christian Santos and Davina Barbara, who kept it flowing fast and furious with some help from last year's contestants 1st Princess Maxine de la Rosa, and 2nd Princess Jordana Lavagna, and Tyrene Navarro, who last year took best interview, and helped with the interview routine. If there is an element of criticism it has to be in the crowning moment… which for the audience and for the new Miss Gibraltar again proved too fast and should be taken slower… maybe the throne should make a reappearance?

Most of the costumed routines including the jacket and tie wear for the bathing suit parade were designed by Dorcas Hammond. The set was minimal and just right with its black and silver staging, with the Alameda once again proving the right setting for what certainly proved to be the show of the year! The event was co-ordinated by the Ministry of Culture.

Bolivian beauty swaps the catwalk for politics

MARTIN AROSTEGUI, SANTA CRUZ

Geostrategic analysis of international affairs.

Jessica Jordan Burton. Jessica Jordan Burton.

RARE is the international beauty contestant who does not speak of an enthusiasm for good works. Jessica Anne Jordan Burton, however, has taken it a step further, swapping her crown as Miss Bolivia for a job that pits her against drug traffickers and paramilitaries.

Miss Jordan, 26, who has an English father and Bolivian mother, has caught the eye not only of pageant judges but of Bolivia's left-wing president, Evo Morales, who has picked her to be his representative in one of the country's most hostile regions.

As the new development chief for the border province of Beni, a restive jungle backwater plagued by right-wing separatists, indigenous militants, and Colombian drug traffickers, she will have the task of lavishing cash on the region in a bid to boost her boss' popularity.
Advertisement: Story continues below

''I don't fear for my safety although my family is afraid of what might happen,'' says Miss Jordan, who represented Bolivia in the 2006 Miss Universe contest, and who will now be managing a budget of $US700 million ($A800 million) to build highways, schools, hospitals and sanitation.

Miss Jordan's appointment to the post of ''director for development of frontier zones'' comes on the heels of her narrow defeat in a race for governor. Critics say the post has been created to usurp the power of her elected rival.

There is also the question of her qualifications for the job. ''Jessica has no experience,'' says Adriana Gil, a former Morales supporter turned opposition Member of Parliament. ''I just know her as a model and have only heard her talk about light topics.''

Miss Jordan started on the catwalk at 16 in the eastern city of Santa Cruz and was signed up by the elite agency, Promotions Gloria, which has produced every Miss Bolivia since 1985. ''I was always more interested in politics than in becoming a beauty queen,'' Miss Jordan insists. ''I saw the title of Miss Bolivia as a stepladder towards a political career.''

Her world debut at the Miss Universe pageant in 2006 coincided with the inauguration of Mr Morales, a former coca farmer, as Bolivia's first indigenous president.

Miss Jordan claims that the re-election of right-wing Beni Governor Ernesto Suarez - who beat her by two points - was the result of fraud.

''My appointment is not to compensate me but to compensate the people,'' she said.

Opponents, however, have criticised her appointment as a ''vice-royalty'' imposed by Mr Morales in a region where his government has consistently fared poorly in the polls. Many also believe she could be dangerously out of her depth in what is essentially a lawless and chaotic frontier zone where Colombian gangs operate huge cocaine refineries and clandestine airstrips.

But the beauty queen insists she will take it all in her elegant stride, citing Mr Morales' own example.

''Experience is the least of it,'' she says. ''We saw lack of experience in the president, an Indian who never finished high school and has done so much for Bolivia.''

Bolivian beauty queen becomes Morales' right hand woman

Political inexperience is no bar to success, says Jessica Anne Jordan Burton, a former Miss Bolivia who is now her president's special envoy

By Martin Arostegui in Santa Cruz

Jessica Anne Jordan BurtonJessica Anne Jordan Burton, a former Miss Bolivia who is now the Bolivian president's special envoy

Rare is the international beauty contestant who does not speak of an enthusiasm for seeing the world and doing good works. Jessica Anne Jordan Burton, however, has taken it a step further: the British-born beauty queen has swapped her crown as Miss Bolivia for a new and somewhat more dangerous job pitted against drug traffickers and paramilitaries.

Miss Jordan, 26, who takes her surname from her English father, has caught the eye not just of the beauty judges but of Bolovia's left-wing firebrand president, Evo Morales, who has hand-picked her to be his personal representative in one of his fiefdom's most hostile regions.

As the new development chief for the border province of Beni, a restive jungle backwater plagued with right-wing separatists, ethnic Indian militants, and Colombian narco-traffickers, she will be tasked with lavishing cash on the region in a bid to boost her boss's popularity. It is, however, a job, that may attract attention for a rather different reason: as Mr Morale's special envoy, she admits she will be at risk of assassination from his political enemies.

"I don't fear for my safety although my family is afraid of what might happen" said Miss Jordan, who represented Bolivia in the 2006 Miss Universe contest, and who will now be managing a budget of $700 million to build highways, shools, hospitals and sanitation. "I feel that the people want to work with me that they have confidence in me. I feel like I´m in my place. It´s my destiny".

Not everyone approves of Ms Jordan's appointment to the post of "Director for Development of Frontier Zones and Macroregions". It comes on the heels of her narrow defeat in a local race for governor, and critics say the new post has been deliberately created to usurp the power of her elected rival. There is also the question of her qualifications for the job - which, apart from a pretty face, consist mainly of presenting a news talk show where she focused mainly on beauty and entertainment stories.

"Jessica has no experience" says Adriana Gil, a former Morales supporter turned opposition MP. "I just know her as a model and have only heard her talk about light topics."

Miss Jordan, 26, was born in Bath, Somerset, to a British engineer who met her mother while working on an oil project in Bolivia during the 1980s. She returned to Bolivia as a young girl with her mother when her parents divorced. "I am mostly British even if I don't look it," she told The Sunday Telegraph, adding that she still holds a British passport, and will be rooting for England in the World Cup because Bolivia failed to qualify.

She started on the catwalk at 16 in the bustling eastern city of Santa Cruz, where modelling is a way of life and beauty contests are not just a daily event but an avenue to other careers.

She was signed up by the local elite model agency, Promotions Gloria, which has produced every Miss Bolivia since 1985 and whose matronly director, Gloria Limpias, has a reputation for mixing beauty with politics. Ms Jordan insists that she always had ambitions to hold office, and that for her, the catwalk was merely a conduit.

"I was always more interested in politics than in becoming a beauty queen" she insisted. "I saw the title of Miss Bolivia as a step ladder towards a political career. Being a beauty queen in Bolivia is very important. You learn a lot. You become a sort of ambassador."

Her world debut at the Miss Universe pageant in 2006 coincided with the inauguration of Evo Morales, a former coca farmer, as Bolvia's first ethnic Andean Indian president. Born of a lower-class background, and keen on cultivating ties with both Cuba's Fidel Castro and Venezuela´s Hugo Chavez, Mr Morales did not go down well in the eastern lowlands, which are dominated by wealthy white-skinned Bolivians of European descent.

To her credit, Miss Jordan broke a pattern established by previous Bolivian beauty queens, who tend not to come from Indian stock and who have occasionally been openly rude about them. A previous Miss Bolivia once remarked: "Bolivians aren't all short, dark and poor. In Santa Cruz we are tall, white and speak English."

By contrast, Miss Jordan openly flirted with president Morales at a public ceremony, giving him an affectionate kiss which raised eyebrows among the eastern landed gentry.

"I was always inclined to help the poor. I guess it´s socialist," she said. "At first I was neutral, but decided to support the government when seeing that they were really for the poor and not the powerful families which had always dominated politics."

Miss Jordan claims that the re-election of right-wing governor Ernesto Suarez - who beat her by two points - was the result of fraud. "My appointment is not to compensate me but to compensate the people," she said.

Opponents, however, have criticised her new appontment as a "Viceroyalty" imposed by Mr Morales in a region where his government has consitently fared poorly in the polls. Many also believe she could be dangerously out of her depth in what is essentially a lawless and chaotic frontier zone. Colombian narco-trafficking gangs operate huge cocaine refineries and clandestine airstrips there, laundering money through new casinos and construction.

Foreign mercenaries from the Balkans have also been active in assisting separatist militias, and there are reports that Shining Path terrorists from neighboring Peru are taking refuge in Beni's remote marshlands.

But the beauty queen insists she will take it all within her elegant stride, citing President Morale's own example. "Experience is the least of it," she said. "We saw lack of experience in the president, an Indian who never finished high school and has done so much for Bolivia."

Still/Video Convergence: A Documentary Team Goes Behind the Scenes at Miss USA

Miss Watermelon
©ACKERMAN GRUBER IMAGES/MISS UNIVERSE ORGANIZATION
http://www.pdnonline.com

Among the lead features on the Miss USA Web site was a behind-the-scenes video of a controversial part of the most recent competition: the boudoir photo shoots of the contestants. Photographs of the women in bed, wearing lingerie and striking come-hither poses, drew plenty of press attention, as they were no doubt intended to do.

The video, called “Waking Up in Vegas,” shows fashion photographer Fadil Berisha working on set with several different contestants. In a voice-over interview, Berisha explains how he won the trust of the reluctant contestants so they would perform for the camera and look sexy in a “classy” way.  The video also includes a voice-over interview with a contestant describing what fun it was, while she subtly lets viewers know she really isn’t that kind of girl.

The video is a mix of docu-tainment and promotion produced for Miss USA by multimedia journalists (and partners) Tim Gruber and Jenn Ackerman. For the past two years, they have been shooting stills and video behind the scenes at the Miss USA and Miss Universe contests for Donald Trump’s Miss Universe Organization. The most recent Miss USA contest was held at a Las Vegas hotel in May, and Ackerman and Gruber ended up producing 12 video stories in 16 days from the still photographs and video they shot of the contestants and events.

The two journalists landed the client through their alma mater, Ohio University, which Miss Universe president Paula Shugart also attended. She wanted reality-TV style content for the Miss Universe web sites and archives. “People are curious about what happens behind the scenes, and we have a great story to tell,” she says.

In search of a photographer, she turned to OU’s School of Visual Communication for a recommendation, and liked what she heard about Gruber and Ackerman. “They were self-starters, who would come with their own ideas,” says Shugart, who didn’t want to do any hand-holding. “They would be able to take us to the next level.”

They also had a mix of shooting and production skills, which is increasingly important as media converges, Shugart says. “No longer can anyone be just a photographer.”

Ackerman and Gruber have produced a number of multimedia editorial projects, including Ackerman’s Emmy award-winning story “Trapped” about mental illness in prisons. But the work for Miss Universe is ultimately a PR assignment. Winning the confidence of the contestants and the organization--criticized by some for degrading women—is a matter of toeing a line.

Gruber says,  “We were shooting for a corporation. We knew there was this fine line drawn in the sand even though nobody talked about it. We knew how far we could push and still have it corporate-friendly.”

Ackerman says they might have approached the stories differently if they had been documenting the competition as independent journalists. But she also says they weren’t restrained or compromised by the assignment.

“I never felt like I was endorsing anything. I felt like I was telling stories,” Ackerman says. Gruber cites an example of one incident they couldn’t show: a contestant fainted during the opening ceremony. But it wasn’t an issue, because it didn’t fit the story line and therefore wasn’t something they wanted to show, he explains. (He also notes that the work for Miss Universe “opened our eyes to other avenues for multimedia work” that pay well and support their personal projects.)

Ackerman and Gruber had some student interns providing some production help, but they did most of the production and post-production on their own. They also set their own production schedule, but tried to turn stories around within two days. To keep to the schedule, they worked 12- to 18-hour days. “We would shoot all day, and then edit at night,” Ackerman says.

They also kept the gear to a minimum. Previously, they used separate video and still cameras. But this time, they shot both still and video with Canon 5D Mark II cameras. They had several hot lights on hand, and those lights were essential for the video cameras they used before. But because of low light capabilities of the 5D, they were able to use available light most of the time.

Ackerman says one technical challenge was juggling video and stills. With the 5D, it is possible to switch from one format to the other in mid shoot, but it requires a shift of mental gears, she explains, and it was awkward on the Miss USA project because they were using Red Rock stabilizers to shoot video.

“If you try to do both [ie, switch back and forth on the fly], then neither will come out well.”

So they tried to figure out in advance what format would work best for any given situation--—and then stuck with it.

“In certain circumstances you know that someone is going to be really emotional, so maybe it’s better to shoot video,” Ackerman says. Or motion is a crucial element and the lighting may not be great, as was the case with the video story about the fitness training.

“But maybe it’s going to be absolutely beautiful and the light is going to be perfect so you should concentrate on really good stills,” she says.

Gruber and Ackerman had to develop their own story ideas. When they were hired, Shugart gave them open-ended instructions: come up with compelling stories that would appeal to fans, and “have fun with it.”

To come up with ideas, they brainstorm before each contest by looking at the schedule of events and drawing on their experience at previous competitions. They run their ideas past Colin Hornett, the new media producer for Miss Universe, and in some cases past Shugart. (Hornett also provides technical support.)

But Ackerman says, “They pretty much give us full creative control to do whatever stories we want to do,” Ackerman says. “They wanted us to be real and dig deep for stories.”

At Miss USA, they covered the crowning ceremony, of course. The boudoir shoots were another obvious story. “It’s so photogenic,” Ackerman says.  Gruber also shot a story called “Strike a Pose” that used time-lapse photography to show the contestants posing like models.

Stories showing the less glamorous side of the contest included “Beauty Boot Camp” which describes the grueling days of the competition, under the watchful eye of a chaperone at all times. Ackerman explains, “We wanted to show how hard it is for girls.” Another story they planned was about the diligent fitness training, which they noticed at last year’s competition: the weight and body-conscious contestants were often exercising in their hotel rooms and in the hallways. (It’s a distinctly American story. At Miss Universe, beauty queens from other nations don’t bother with exercise, Ackerman says.)

One of their challenges was getting past the guarded beauty-contest façade of the contestants, and some wary chaperones. Shugart introduced Ackerman and Gruber to the contestants and staff, but it was up to them to build rapport quickly.

“One of the biggest stereotypes is that the girls are their perfect pageant Pattys—that they’re not real, they’re plastic,” Shugart says. “You have to show that they’re real young women. We want to show that they’re eminently relatable—that they can be seen as a next door neighbor.”

Miss Universe New Zealand 2010, Ria van Dyke, has had her first photo shoot—if you do not count press ones—with Angela Scott. These are stunning shots, confirming many of the positive comments found here at Lucire’s web edition as well as other pageant-oriented websites.
Ria’s win is drawing extra support from companies in New Zealand. Beauty on the Strand of Parnell, Auckland, has joined as a pageant sponsor, providing her with sun-tanning and face products.
The Miss Universe New Zealand official website is now being updated regularly as Ria gets ready for her international competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, during August. Similarly, the pageant fan page on Facebook is getting regular updates, with images from the last four years having been uploaded.
According to Lucire’s publisher, Jack Yan, who served as head judge this year: ‘We have not seen such positive public comments—nearly universally—for any Miss Universe New Zealand in the four years I have been on the judging panel for the pageant. These photographs show that Ria’s intelligence and sincerity are matched with outward beauty. She is, to date, our most popular Miss Universe New Zealand this century.
