The mother of the Colac-born woman picked as a finalist for the Miss Universe beauty pageant speaks about her daughter's impending date with destiny.

Emma Newcombe has been selected as one of four Australian finalists vying for the chance to become the official Australian representative for the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

The Miss Universe pageant was begun in 1952 by a clothing company, and then acquired by tycoon Donald Trump in 1996; despite the Australian round of beauty contests being abandoned some years ago the contest received a major boost in publicity when Aussie model Jennifer Hawkins was declared Miss Universe in 2004.

"Actually it was all by surprise. We were in Geelong last Thursday, just shopping for our daughter's wedding, and someone approached her and asked her would she be interested in having a chat... she was a little bit taken aback by it all, she wasn't quite sure. Once she spoke to them and myself and her sister encouraged her, we said have a go Em, have some fun, so she did and that's how it all got started. It's quite amazing how it all got started for her," says mum, Bridgitte Newcombe.

According to Bridgitte, walking through a shopping centre in Geelong was her daughter's first experience with the international glitz and glamour of the Miss Universe competition.

"We had no idea. We didn't know about it or anything. It was quite funny, that day we were in a rush to get down there, and she was in her old sort of clothes, and they said 'no, we want a photograph of you', and she looks at that photo now and says 'oh will you look at me?' Her hair was quite wild... it's quite an amazing story actually," she laughs.

While other countries hold their own contests and finals to find their representative for Miss Universe, Australia chose to stop these contests in 2000, allowing a modelling agency to go about the search instead - which begs the question of how much modelling experience Emma has had.

"No, she's a qualified dental nurse, and had a break from that and went travelling around Queensland for the last ten months, but then came home and she's been helping my husband Rod and I milking cows on the farm for a couple of weeks now," replies Mum. "Sunday she was taken through to Melbourne, where they gave her some modelling skills, and catwalking, and she's adpated to that very well. Sore feet of course... I was talking to her last night and she'll be home this morning, and it is another special day for her today because it is her birthday today, so it's all happening for Emma this week."

The Australian final for Miss Universe is in April - when the people of Colac find out hear whether one of their own has what it takes to win one of the world's oldest beauty pageants.
