Cory Quirino is new Miss World director for the Philippines

Pageant Watch FITNESS and wellness guru Cory Quirino is the new national director for Miss World in the Philippines.
Cory was awarded the franchise by Ms. Julia Morley, president of the Miss World Organization, following the recent trip to the Miss World 2010 Pageant of Paul and Doris Lee of Fusion Excel International (FE) which acquired the Miss World franchise for Malaysia. Cory is FE’s ambassador in the Philippines.
Pageant Watch The Miss World is the oldest and longest-running major international beauty pageant having started in London in 1951 by Julia’s husband, the late Eric Morley. The Philippines started sending representatives to the pageant in 1966 when impresario Ferdie Villar (now based in the US) acquired the Miss World franchise and eventually staged the Miss Republic of the Philippines contest until 1976. Vangie Pascual won the Miss RP tilt in 1973 and eventually finished as first runner-up to Miss World 1973 Marjorie Wallace of the USA. Five years earlier, Pinky Amabuyok was fourth runner-up to Miss World 1968 Penelope Plummer of Australia.
In 1977, the Mutya ng Pilipinas organization got the Miss World franchise and selected Filipina delegates to the pageant until 1991. Sara Jane Areza and Sherry Rose Byrne, US-based Filipinas, both emerged as semi-finalist and Queen of Beauty for Asia in 1982 and 1986, respectively.
In 1992, Bb. Pilipinas Charities Inc. took ownership of the Miss World franchise and produced outstanding delegates namely: Sharmaine "Ruffa" Gutierrez, second runner-up 1993; Mafae Yunon, fourth runner-up 2003; and Karla Bautista, fourth runner-up and Queen of Beauty for Asia & Oceania 2004.
With FE’s goal of grooming Miss Malaysia and Miss Philippines to win the coveted Miss World crown, Cory Quirino is thankful to Paul and Doris Lee for securing the rights for her to organize the new Miss World-Philippines Pageant.
Julia Morley, together with the current Miss World Alexandria Mills of the USA and her runners-up Emma Wareus of Botswana and Adriana Vasini of Venezuela, will be travelling to FE’s headquarters in Malaysia on January 22 for a recognition dinner. Morley and her group will then fly to Manila on January 24 for the formal contract-signing with Ms. Quirino.
