Keneisha Thom is ready for Miss Universe 2006.

After three months of training

SUNDAY NEWSDAY REPORTER Sunday, June 25 2006

IN THE THREE months since she was selected as Trinidad and Tobago’s representative at the 2006 Miss Universe Pageant, Keneisha Thom has been going through rigorous training in preparation for the international competition.

She is being put through her paces by actress/choreographer Allison Brown and maintains a gruelling schedule that includes two hours of heavy workout at the gym, followed by hair and make-up training, fitting sessions and interview preparations. During her two hours of training with Brown, Keneisha practises walking. She also has to remember how to use her hands and avoid fidgeting.

Through it all, the statuesque Tobago beauty maintains a positive mind-set and says she is looking forward to participating in the pageant on July 23 in Los Angeles.

“It gets a bit tiring at times but it is for the best,” said Keneisha, who leaves for the competition on July 5.

Brown told Sunday Newsday she is pleased with Keneisha’s progress.

“Keneisha knows how to charm the people, she knows how she has to look when she is presenting herself.”

Brown, who is responsible for preparing Trinidad and Tobago representatives for the Miss Universe Pageant for the past four years, says apart from the physical preparations, she tried to ensure that this country’s delegates go into the competition in a positive frame of mind. She also makes sure that they enjoy the experience.

“I always say to them, it does not matter if you win or lose just make sure to love what you have done,” she said.

“It is most important to go to a pageant experience fully yourself and see how much work it entails. You have to be able to think on your feet and speak for yourself. Control and grace always work in your favour, it makes the people aware of your presence.”

According to Brown, there are benefits and challenges for the young women who participate in international beauty pageants. One of the positives, she pointed out, is that doors open for great new opportunities.

“The negative aspect is that you are forced to be away from home and it becomes extremely difficult. You are basically uprooted overnight,” she said.

Brown strongly believes that this country’s best prospects for a pageant of the stature of the Miss Universe competition are young women with previous experience in a major beauty pageant.

“In Keneisha’s case, she has had the experience, she knows what to expect, she does the job and she does it well,” she said.
