Wendy Fitzwilliam, Miss Universo 1998, Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund

The editors at Essence magazine have recognised former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam's contribution to the world.

In the October issue of the magazine, in an article entitled "25 Strong Women Who are Shaping the World-Making Changes", Fitzwilliam was listed as one of 25 sisters who give back to move forward.

The short report on Fitzwilliam, headlined "Wendy Fitzwilliam Championing Caribbean Children orphaned by HIV/AIDS", said she has put her popularity to work as an outspoken advocate for people in the Caribbean living with HIV/AIDS. While competing in the Miss Trinidad and Tobago pageant in 1997, she visited the Cyril Ross Nursery, which cares for children living with the disease, and it touched her heart.

Fitzwilliam went on to become Miss Universe. When her reign ended in 1999, she founded the Hibiscus Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that has raised millions for the care of HIV kids. Now a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund, Fitzwilliam, 32, has not forgotten the institution that inspired her activism.

The Cyril Ross Nursery has begun an expansion plan to treat more children.
