A regal moment

Make your way to Parkson Pavilion KL for a glimpse of a beauty queen’s traditional costume.
COME Aug 23, reigning Miss Malaysia/Universe Nadine Ann Thomas will be competing against some of the world’s most beautiful women, in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the Miss Universe 2010 title.
The 59th edition of the pageant will see more than 80 women from around the world at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Now, unless you buy a ticket to the pageant (and an airplane ticket to Las Vegas), the only way you are going to catch a glimpse of Nadine is when she comes on TV to introduce herself in a traditional costume representing Malaysia.
Often, this split second introduction gives TV audiences little time to appreciate what the contestants are wearing. A shame, really, given the time and effort that goes into designing a dress fit for a pageant winner.

Imperial splendour: Nadine Ann Thomas in the Amir Luqman Othman’s outfit inspired by legendary Kelantanese princess Cik Siti Wan Kembang.

This is especially when a costume is as elaborate and interesting as the one Nadine will be sporting.
Created by Kelantan-born designer Amir Luqman Othman, 25, the outfit is inspired by legendary Kelantanese princess Cik Siti Wan Kembang, whose determination, bravery and courage made her one of the country’s most respected female rulers.
It is believed that during her reign, the state was so prosperous that foreign merchants intentionally destroyed their vessels upon arrival so they had an excuse to stay on.
Othman’s design aims to showcase the beauty and strength of the warrior princess. His colour palette of gold and brown is meant to embody power, beauty and mystery. The gold represents the wealth of Kelantan while brown signifies the strength of Cik Siti Wan Kembang. The intricate gold lining represents the flowing rivers which brought trade and fortune to the state.
If you want more than just a split second view of the costume Nadine will be wearing at the finals, you’re in luck. Othman’s design is currently on display for public viewing at Parkson in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.
Shoppers, fashion enthusiasts and curious members of the public can catch a glimpse of the outfit until this Sunday, after which it will make its way to Las Vegas. By S. Indramalar
