Illuminata James, 23, from Mwanza was last weekend crowned Tanzania`s Miss universe after beating 19 other girls.

Apart from the crown she took home Sh3 million, was offered a one-year French course at the Alliance Francaise, cosmetics worth Sh500, 000 and a Samsung Omnia cellphone.

To cap it all someone from the audience, who was not named, gave her $1000.

The event, which was held at the newly-opened Mlimani City``s Conference centre, attracted mainly a corporate crowd.

Hidaya Maeda,23, who was also named Miss International, took the second runners-up position, while Evelyn Almasi, 22, became the first runners-up.

Apart from the top five, all the contestants walked away with Samsung cellphones.

Previous holders of the title include Miriam Odemba and model Flaviana Matata, who unfortunately was not around.

The three girls automatically qualified to represent Tanzania in the Miss Universe in the world which is expected to take place later this year in the Bahamas.

Prior to the competition, its organisers under the leadership of Maria Sarungi, for the first time went to scout for contestants in five regions of Tanzania-Mwanza, Arusha , Morogoro, Dodoma and Dar es Salaam.

One of the contestants, Joyce Musyani, had to withdraw after she learnt about the sad news of her uncles death, leaving 19 others.

The show was graced by performances from Kenyan artiste Wahu, Tanzania`s AY, Diamond Musica and the Albino Revolution.
