As the excitement builds for the staging of the Miss Jamaica Universe beauty pageant, hundreds of fans came out to experience the first-ever World Wise-sponsored Miss Jamaica Universe Roadshow last weekend.

The series of shows, a new innovation for the competition, saw scouts travel to the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in Montego Bay, Island Village in Ocho Rios, and Fayor's Entertainment Centre in Mandeville, in search of potential contestants for the pageant. With the chance to win the title of Miss Jamaica Universe and a handsome prize package, the response to the open calls was strong from the parish beauties.

In Ocho Rios, the powerful vibes inside the Island Village Shopping Centre energised the audience as DJ Venom pumped up the volume on his wicked mixes from the latest hits. Motivated by the promise of receiving $1 million in cash, courtesy of title sponsor World Wise, and driving off in style in a BMW 120i hatchback, courtesy of Stewart Motors, prospective contestants were busy making enquiries regarding entry to the pageant.

Pulsating beats

While the BMW 120i was on display, the audience rocked to the DJ's pulsating beats while anticipating appearances by Miss Jamaica Universe Zahra Redwood, Pulse's Caribbean Model Search Reality TV show stars, and a debut musical performance by supermodel Nadine Willis.

Sporting bikinis by The Mushroom and high-fashion sandals from Bridget Sandals (the Caribbean's 'first lady of sole'), the hot bodies of Pulse's top model discoveries for 2007 warmed the audience as cheers rang up for winner Rochelle Notice, Fallon Harris and Racquel Jones.

Jamaica's most prominent supermodel, Nadine Willis, came out to thunderous applause for her debut musical performance. Fierce with the mike in hand, as if she were on the catwalk, the model had the crowd singing in tune to the catchy and upbeat refrain of her new single So What? Her bubbly personality and engaging performance earned her an encore and Willis certainly delivered.

DJ Venom took the reins once again before the audience's rapturous welcome for the poised and radiant Zahra Redwood. Fans cheered and screamed for the first-ever Rastafarian beauty to take the Miss Jamaica Universe title as she took the stage. They listened as she encouraged potential Miss Jamaica Universe finalists to embrace their dreams and participate in what she deemed a life-changing experience.

Signed calendars

Eager fans then lined up to get photos with their stars. Redwood had her hands full as she signed hundreds of her stunning World Wise calendars and Willis autographed photos and gave away copies of her new single to lucky patrons.

An innovative and entertaining way to search for contestants, the final two Miss Jamaica Universe Roadshows will take place at Portmore Pines Plaza and at the Pulse Complex in New Kingston, February 23 and 24, respectively. The shows are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Pulse Investments invites young women, between the ages of 18-26, who are unmarried, without children and who have the necessary beauty of face and body, intelligence and awareness to sign up for the 2008 Miss Jamaica Universe pageant. Potential applicants can call Pulse at 968-1090 or visit the Pulse Complex, at 38A Trafalgar Road, to pick up an application form.
