FROM Australia's beaches to the Miss Universe catwalk, surf lifesaving's red and yellow will be on show to the world.

Miss Universe Australia winner Kimberley Busteed has chosen the iconic swimsuit and cap as her national costume for the glamorous pageant in Mexico City next month.

The former teen swimming champion and surf lifesaving competitor has no qualms about strutting in her red, one-piece togs in front of a global audience.

"Portraying our beach image is going to be such a big hit," she said.

Surf Life Saving spokeswoman Lauren Ryan said the organisation was honoured that its uniform would bepresented on the world stage.

"With this year celebrating 100 years of lifesaving, it's a great way to bring attention to all the work lifesavers have done," Ms Ryan said.

Our national costume has received a colourful twist from past Miss Universe entrants.

Last year, Erin McNaught modelled a Steve Irwin-style khaki outfit, and in 2005 Michelle Guy wore a wattle-and-gumleaf creation.

Busteed's life has turned upside-down since she won the Australian crown inPerth last Friday.

The Queensland teenager has had a rigorous week of preparation for her departure to Mexico on Tuesday for the May 28 pageant.

"I'm having a ball," she said.
