VANCOUVER — Jenna Talackova was born a boy. But that didn't stop her from being a Miss Universe Canada contestant. Indeed, until a few days ago her profile was visible on the official beauty pageant website.
And just like that, it was gone.
"All I can say is that they disqualified me because I am not 'natural born,'" Talackova said Friday in an email to the Vancouver Sun. "(That) doesn't make sense because since I was conscious I always felt this way."
The Vancouver native says she has known she was a female since she was four years old. Talackova began hormone therapy at 14 and had sex reassignment surgery in 2010. Blogs were reporting Talackova's inclusion on the Miss Universe Canada's finalists' page as early as March 13. But her beauty pageant progress was short-lived.
She considers it a "human rights" issue but would not elaborate until she talks to her lawyer early next week.
