MANILA, Philippines — A fashion model from Ecuador who pushed for the protection and conservation of mangroves was crowned 2011 Miss Earth at the University of the Philippines Theater in Diliman, Quezon City, on Saturday night.

Miss Philippines Athena Imperial took 2nd runner-up honors and was crowned Miss Earth Water.

The fairest of all the 80 so-called “Earth warriors” in the environmentthemed beauty pageant was Ecuadorian Olga Alava, 23.

“Get acquainted with the mangroves near your area and know their importance. Be vigilant toward activities happening in your surrounding areas and keep an open eye to note destruction in mangrove areas,” Alava said after the contest.

Mangroves are tropical maritime trees that play an important role in land-building and helps keep the critical balance in the ecosystem.

The beauty queen also urged the public to participate in scientific plantations of mangroves flora at all possible areas. “Mangroves are now protected by law. They are very important for coastal regions and their natural diversity.’’

Alava succeeded Miss Earth Nicole Faria of India.

Driely Araujo, of Brazil, was named Miss Earth Air, or first runner-up; followed by Imperial as Miss Earth Water; and Caroline Medina, Miss Earth Fire (third runner-up). They received cash prizes and products from sponsors.

Imperial’s placement capped the country’s winning streak in beauty pageants this year – Shamcey Supsup, 2011 Miss Universe, third runner-up; Diannce Necio, 2011 Miss International, Top 15; Gwedoline Ruais, 2011 Miss World, 1st runner up; and Czarina Gatbonton, second runner-up, Miss Humanity International. The last time the Philippines placed in the same contest was in 2009.

The Miss Earth 2011 was originally scheduled to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, as one of the events to celebrate the 84th birthday of Thailand’s King H.M. Bhumidol Adulyadej, but the floods in Thailand prompted organizers of the pageant to transfer the venue to the Philippines.
