News that the 60th Miss World Pageant would return to Sanya, Hainan Province in October was announced at press conference and launching ceremony in Beijing Monday. Chairwoman of the Miss World organization Julia Morley and reigning Miss World champion Kaiane Aldorino made appearances during the event.
"We are delighted to be returning to China for Miss World 2010," Morley commented. "Miss World has a special relationship with Sanya and there is no better place to begin our 60th year celebrations."
This is the fifth time that Miss World has held its final in Sanya, after the years 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007. Contestants from more than 120 countries will participate in this year's final.
Priding itself on the nickname the "Hawaii of China," Sanya has benefited a rapid surge in tourism by holding the Miss World contest. The island province's Beauty Crown Theater, specifically built for the 2003 Miss World Final, will host the 2010 Miss World final.
Aldorino said that being in China has been a magnificent experience, and that she looks forward to welcoming all of the competition's contestants to Sanya's "tropical paradise."
Began in 1951, the Miss World competition has become one of the world's most watched annual events, with a purported worldwide viewing audience of more than one billion. The contest consists of beauty, fashion and talent competitions. Winning contestants traditionally go on tours of the host country to support charitable causes and take part in community events.
