Japan’s Miss Universe Won’t Wear Kimono Criticized as Obscene

By Masatsugu Horie

July 31 (Bloomberg) -- Japan’s candidate for the 2009 Miss Universe pageant will make adjustments to her costume after the black kimono outfit she had chosen was criticized as too revealing.

“Considering the opinions we got from many supporters and other people concerned, we decided to make the hemline of the costume longer,” IBG Japan, which operates the local Miss Universe contest, said on a posting yesterday on its Web site.

Emiri Miyasaka, a 25-year-old from Tokyo, who won Japan’s preliminary contest in May, disclosed her official costume, created by French designer Ines Ligron and Japan’s Yoshiyuki Ogata, on July 22. The pageant organizer and designers received complaints from more than 2,000 people, including one who said the kimono looked like “something a prostitute might wear,” according to a report today in the Sankei newspaper.

Croc tries to eat Miss Univer

Rachael Finch: Croc tries to eat Miss Universe

Miss Finch, 20, was touring a Northern Territory crocodile farm when a 5m saltwater crocodile named Eric took a fancy to her.

When Miss Finch was allowed inside Eric's enclosure to watch him being fed, the reptile, who was supposed to be enjoying a lunch of raw chicken at the time, lunged at her.

Startled by the sudden move, she jumped out of the way and ran to safety.

Later, the former model laughed off the encounter.

"As soon as I saw him move I got nervous," she said.

Miss Finch, who hails from Queensland, told the Northern Territory News that the incident was one of the more unusual events she has been involved in since being announced the Australian winner of the Miss Universe contest in April.

Charlie Manolis, Crocodylus Park spokesman, said Eric the crocodile had been removed from a river three years ago after he began "looking at fishermen the wrong way".

"He's a nice old croc, but I wouldn't like to be on the wrong end of him," Mr Manolis told The Brisbane Times.

"There's always an element of, you know, something not going to plan."

However, he said Miss Finch had not been in danger.

"We don't normally do that (allow non-trained people inside the enclosures)...but on special occasions we can go in and feed him with other people present with special security measures in place.

"He's pretty predictable. I don't think we would have seen the headline 'Croc Eats Miss Universe' in the papers this morning."

Miss Finch will now travel to the Bahamas to represent Australia in the international finale of Miss Universe next month.

Diana Miss Universe Ireland

Diana Miss Universe Ireland

MISS Universe Ireland Diana Donnelly is set to enjoy a romantic reunion with her boyfriend of three years, Aaron Foy, the day she returns from Donald Trump's international beauty pageant in the Bahamas.

The young couple haven't seen each other for months, with Aaron currently based in Chicago, where he has been completing an business internship this summer.

The Assets model (20) explained how she and her other half have booked their flights home to arrive within minutes of one another, and says she can't wait to see him as they've been on different continents throughout her whirlwind win.

She is due to take off for the sun-kissed island of the Bahamas on Sunday, where she will remain for three weeks, as she goes head to head with 84 other girls, to represent Ireland in the contest.

"I'm so excited about it and a little bit nervous. I've been ranked at eighth place on some of the websites so I think that's a good sign," she told the Herald.

"My parents are coming over for the final week so I'm hoping I'll actually be able to spend some time with them while they're there.

upset

"I won't be too upset to come home, though, because Aaron's arriving straight after me.

"Unfortunately he can't make it to the competition as he won't be finished on time, but it will be something to look forward to when I'm coming home," she added.

In addition to preparing for the contest in the coming days, Diana is planning to spend as much time as possible with her sister Danielle, who will be leaving for a year and a half to travel the world with her boyfriend next week.

According to Diana: "I have loads to do for the next few days but I want to spend as much time as possible with my sister before she goes away.

"I also have another dress fitting later on with Brendan Scully of Bscene, who's making my dress.

"I can't wait to see my outfit for the national category. I'm going to be dressed as a leprechaun with a green blazer jacket, Ireland shorts covered in sequins, and an orange tank top underneath," she added.

Yesterday Diana spent the afternoon having her hair done by renowned hairdresser Mark Doyle of Peter Marks.

MISS Universe Australia Rachael Finch met some crocodiles during her Northern Territory visit yesterday and had to run for her life when a 5m croc named Eric lunged at her.

The stunner told the Northern Territory News it was an incredible - yet scary - experience.

She said it was one of the more unusual events she had been involved in since being announced winner of the pageant in April.

"As soon as I saw him move I got nervous," she said as she laughed about her brush with the huge saltie.

The bubbly beauty visited Crocodylus Park in Darwin to meet some of the biggest crocs in captivity.

The park was established 30 years ago and is home to more than a thousand crocs from 30cm long hatchlings to massive adults.

Finch left Darwin last night to begin her trip to the Bahamas where she will represent Australia at the international finale of Miss Universe in August.

The former model from Queensland, beat 31 other finalists to win Miss Universe Australia - the award formerly won by Jennifer Hawkins, who then famously went on to become Miss Universe in 2004.

Model scout Henry Peterson encouraged Finch to enter the pageant after spotting her "underneath the wings of a Boeing 747 at Townsville Airport".

"When I first saw her I knew she was special," he said after she won.

No doubt the saltie, who liked the look of Finch more than his chicken, would agree.

Clair eyes Miss Universe title

Red rose ... Clair Cooper

Published: Today
STUNNING Clair Cooper jets off to the Caribbean next week to represent Great Britain at the Miss Universe contest.

And not only will the redhead beauty be flying the flag for the nation, she's also teamed up with the nation's favourite red top.

The gorgeous 27-year-old will be writing a behind-the-scenes blog from inside the contest starting next week.

Our girl will be lifting the lid on the bitching, shoe-stealing and nastiness backstage at the world's biggest beauty contest.

Pretty Clair says she'll be doing her best to bring home the award.

But has revealed she didn't even start competing until she was 18!

"I didn't start anything in the shape of modelling until then," giggles the London lass.

"I was ginger ... I mean of course I still am ginger. And I love it!

"But the sad fact is, kids are not usually complimented on their looks when they have red hair. I know I certainly wasn't.

"There was a bit of name-calling, but when isn't there at school? All kids go through it."

It's obvious Clair has always had an air of confidence about her.

Not Hollywood hissy fit style confidence, but a cool edge which goes with the job of serial-pageant-queen.

She's witty, eloquent and downright likeable and while her looks are breathtaking - all flame-red hair, perfect porcelain skin and super long eyelashes - her brains have certainly helped her get to the top.

Clair works by day for a top music company, often trudging through muddy festival fields arranging big brand marketing across shows.

But swapping wellies for stilletos comes naturally to Clair and she loves the change of gear.

"Music is my first love, so obviously my job is really important to me, but beauty pageants started off as a fun hobby and then became so much more.

"While some people might think they are shallow, it's more than just looking pretty in front of a group of judges.

"The big selling point for me is all the charity work you get to do as well.

"When I won Miss London in 2006 I was asked to be ambassador for the Heineken Cup with rugby star Austin Healey.

"And if I win the Miss Universe title I'll be working in New York for Aids and HIV charities - that is what matters to me more."

Clair understands the attraction of her unique 'English Rose' looks to these competitions .

She said: "I know we are a multicultural society, which I think is great.

"But it doesn't get more English Rose than this - I hope they will see that I have something quintessentially British about me.

"All the girls are absolutely stunning. Beautiful black cascading hair, amazing tanned skin - you name it.

"So it's definitely good for me to stand out from the crowd.

"And I've got shape too - boobs and a bum - I think it's important that girls realise this is about celebrating womanhood, not anything like the fashion modelling androgynous look."

Clair prepares for months before the contests in between her hectic work schedule to make sure she is face, word and charity fundraising perfect.

"For Miss GB I had my outfit for the Little Black Dress round custom made in China .

"I also spent hours shopping for the right bikini and evening wear."

Clair says making a different to other people's lives is the best thing about what she does.

"I raised thousands for the Joshua Foundation through my work with them, they help young children with cancer ," she revealed.

"Miss Universe will be even more full-on for the whole three weeks as they are looking for someone they can work with for the year afterwards.

"The event itself is full of press conferences, photoshoots, visiting the different islands and then lots of rehearsal.

"If I scoop the title, I won't be heading home for 12 months!"

Clair has built a reputation of being level-headed at events and stays well away from the cat-fighting and bitching.

With a smile she adds: "While I know it goes on, most of the girls wouldn't dare be like that to me, as they know I can't stand it.

"That kind of thing goes well over my head too - I'm not bothered.

"This is going to be my last pageant. At 27 I'm considered an old maid anyway so I'd never spoil it with being competitive.

"I want to win, sure, but whether I do or not I am going out with a bang and not a nasty story about being a cow to other contestants!"

Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza supports gay marriage

Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza supports gay marriage
July 28, 9:43 AM

Howard Stern put the reigning Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza to the ultimate test on Tuesday morning’s edition of The Howard Stern Show. It wasn’t the traditional “take your top off” or “swallow the kielbasa” test that Howard Stern usually subjects his most beautiful guests to. This time, Howard Stern asked Miss Universe the question that made the most recent Miss USA pageant (almost) worth watching—the question that catapulted Carrie Prejean, to the front page of the blogosphere—the question of gay marriage.

Howard Stern took a cue from Perez Hilton and asked Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza if she would support the legalization of gay marriage. Mendoza danced around the issue a bit at first, stating that Carrie Prejean had the right to think whatever she wanted and “why should I care” what the second-runner up to the Miss USA crown thinks. When pressed further, Dayana Mendoza stated that she had several close gay friends in her life that she would like to see be able to spend the rest of their lives with the people that they loved.

Howard Stern cornered her on what has apparently become the most compelling pageant question of our generation: “Should gay marriage be legal?”

“Why not?” responded Dayana Mendoza.

Dayana Mendoza joked that if her stance on gay marriage conflicted with her Miss Universe title, she only has about a month in her reign anyway.

“Bravo!” called out Howard Stern Show openly gay guest announcer George Takei. George Takei (better known to Star Trek fans as the original “Sulu”) was one of the estimated 18,000 Californians to marry a same sex partner during the brief legalization of same sex marriage in California last year.

Miss Universe Supports Gay Marriage!

mx0189136.jpg

Take note, Mz. Prejean!

While visiting the Howard Stern show on Tuesday, Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza was slapped with a very familiar (and intelligent) question.

"Should gay marriage be legal?" asked Stern.

Mendoza's response: “Why not?”

She elaborated that many of her friends are gay and that she would like to see them able to legally commit to their loved ones for a lifetime.

Miss Universe even stated that if anyone had a problem with her opinions, she only has four weeks left in her reign.

Now, that's a beauty queen!!!

'Fashion is about wearing the right attitude'

Ekta Chowdhry, Pantaloons Femina Miss India Universe 2009, speaks her mind on the outfits she plans to don for the Miss Universe pageant, her

Ekta Chowdhry
Ekta Chowdhry
early modelling days and her fashion fundas...

Kolkata connection
This is my first visit to Kolkata. I have admired the beauty of Bengali women as much as the works of Aparna Sen and Rituparno Ghosh. Of course, the mishti doi and rosogollas are always a favourite. This time around, my visit was strictly limited to Anamika Khanna’s studio where I had done to get my fittings done for the outfits that I might be wearing for the Miss Universe pageant.

Counting days
In another two week’s time, I’ll leave for Bahamas to participate in the Miss Universe pageant. More than a celebration of personal beauty, this pageant is a space where I can represent the richness of Indian culture. I am on a mission to make my country proud.

Bollywood calling
Right now, I am concentrating only on the pageant. As for Bollywood, I really need a tall hero to be cast opposite me since my height is 5ft 9 1/2 in.

Beauty and brains
I feel like reacting to debate over whether beauty queens have a thinking mind too. Why curb others’ freedom of expression?

Fashion fundas
Fashion is about wearing the right attitude. Eat right, exercise regularly, think positive and flaunt a smile — that’s fashionable for me.

Todavía no he elegido nada.

Published: Monday, July 27, 2009

New York (Tadias) - 24-year-old Kidan Tesfahun, Ethiopia’s Miss Millennium Queen, has been named Best Female Model of the World 2009 at a fashion modeling contest organized by Sukier Models International in Alicante, Spain, on 24th July 2009, her representatives announced.

According to the competition’s director and founder Sukier Vallejo Marte: “The contest was created with the idea of attracting new faces and talent for future projects both domestically (in Spain) and internationally…”

Tesfahun, who had previously represented Ethiopia at the Miss International 2007 and Miss Earth 2008, says her newly gained title adds confidence to her future prospects in the modeling industry.

“From here on I guess the sky is the limit for me,” the aspiring model said. “I have gained the professional acceptance I always knew I should have, and I am indeed grateful to the Almighty Lord for guiding me and making my dreams come true.”

She is the second Ethiopian model this year from the Ethiopian Millennium pageant to win an international beauty competition. Bewunetwa Abebe, 19, was crowned Model of Africa at the 2009 International Beauty and Model festival in China.

Are the larger pageants beyond repair?

Activists of the left have been at war with pageants for decades. In the old days, they marched outside pageant venues. Today, some of them are judges.

Activists have, in effect, been unable to beat pageants, so they have joined them.

As former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean can attest, if you say anything not in agreement with the leftist agenda, you’re cooked.

Here are examples of some of the most-recent headlines about Carrie:

The Miss Teen USA pageant is decided July 31. Like the Miss USA pageant, Miss Teen USA is a Donald Trump outfit, as is Miss Universe.

What has to prey on the mind of every contestant – whether in a Trump pageant or one sponsored by others – is what will happen to them in the public eye if they are asked a question that requires them to agree with liberal activists. Do they go along to avoid being destroyed or say how they really feel?

It is almost impossible for a reporter to gain an interview with a contestant in a major pageant. Considering the fallout from Carrie answering a question, one can understand why.

I’m looking forward to Carrie’s book in November. It will probably represent the most-honest insider assessment of pageants we have ever read.

In the meantime, perhaps the answer to continuing the United States’ long pageant tradition is to ignore the big guys and concentrate on local contests, where less money, ego and political correctness are on the line.

Ksenia Sukhinova, the winner of the 2008 Miss World beauty pageant, is confident she going to set a new world record in charity fundraising. She has been on a world tour for 6 months and has already raised over 25 million dollars, Russian website Glomu.ru reports.

Having made a brief stopover in Moscow, Ksenia took part in a photo session for the popular Face.ru project on July 24.

“I am right in the middle of my world charity tour,” Sukhinova told the journalists, adding she is sorry to have been away from Russia for so long and is really enjoying the shooting in the Moscow trade center Atrium which is taking place on such a beautiful sunny day.

“Shooting with exotic animals was our original idea, but it had to be put off, “ Alexander Korobkov and Daria Zatseva, the photographers responsible for the photo session, revealed. “Instead, we are going to have a romantic and airy session with Ksenia and soap bubbles. We wouldn’t like to share our professional secrets in advance, and hope everything will turn out right,”Alexander added.

After the Moscow shooting, the world’s beauty is resuming her world tour and leaving for Europe. “Ksenia’s schedule is extremely tight, with lots of shootings and other activities, “ Sukhinova’s director said. “We are indeed heading for a record!” he claimed.

Ksenia Sukhinova was born 1987 in Nizhnevartovsk. She lives in Tyumen, Siberia, where she is a fifth-year student at the Tyumen State Oil and Gas University, studying cybernetic systems.

Dos Miss España juntas en la pasarela

J. A. RIERA

The city of queens

Over the years, Bangalore has gifted the world with some of the most beautiful faces. And this spirit continues to to reign.

What makes Bangalore such a beautiful city? Is it the weather, culture or, hang on... is it the girls? Be it film stars or beauty queens, Namma Bengaluru has given the world of fashion and showbiz some of the best models and actresses. While beauties like Sara Corner, Sandhya Chib, Nafisa Joseph and Lara Dutta ruled the hearts of millions by winning the Femina Miss India titles, others like Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma got direct tickets to Bollywood.

For decades, Bangalore gals walked away with those sparkling crowns. But, in the past few years, there have been none. Has Bangalore gone off the map? "That's not true," says fashion guru Prasad Bidapa. "I agree that our girls have not been able to bring back home the Miss World or Universe titles. But, they have successfully made it to the final round. Even this year, we have had Ragini Dwivedi and Faith Pandey, who won sub titles and also made it to the top 10. And, there will be a lot more in the upcoming contests," adds Prasad.

So, there is no looking back as the city continues to spin out its best beauties. "Yeah, definitely; Bangalore has girls coming from across the country and it is this cosmopolitan culture that enables us to come up with so many faces. Moreover, unlike other cities, girls here are encouraged to take up a career in this field. So, the girls are smart and confident," Prasad says.

Here's a line-up of Bangalore beauties who have dazzled the industry with their charm.

Shyla Lopez

Winner of Femina Miss India 1992, who later represented India in Miss World 1992 contest, held in Sun City, South Africa.

Sandhya Chib

Walked away with the Miss India Universe crown in 1996. Soon after she won the title, Sandhya married Anup Jacob and went off to the United States.

Nafisa Joseph

/photo.cms?msid=795644
Former Miss India Nafisa Joseph

A Miss India Universe winner in 1997, she was a semi-finalist at the Miss Universe pageant. Nafisa was the youngest participant at the pageant. In 1999, she was a judge for the MTV India VJ Hunt. A week later, she was called for a screen test to host a show on MTV. She presented the MTV House Full show for nearly five years. She also acted in a television series C.A.T.S, the Indian version of Charlie's Angels. In 2004, she hosted a show Style on Star World. She also launched a television programming unit, 2's Company, with her then fiance Gautam Khanduja, and even edited a magazine called Gurlz. Apart from modelling and hosting, Nafisa campaigned for Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and People for Animal (PFA) and wrote a weekly column, Nafisa for Animals in the Bangalore edition of the Times of India.

Lara Dutta

Lara was crowned Femina Miss India Universe and Miss Universe in 2000. At Miss Universe 2000 in Cyprus, Lara was the clear favourite ahead of fierce competition from Venezuela, Spain, US and Canada. She made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with Andaaz, which got her the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. She has appeared in a number of films like Masti, Kaal, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, No Entry, Bhagham Bhag and Partner.

Vaishali Desai

She won the Miss International 2005 title and has worked in several commercials. Vaishali was brought up in Bangalore and did her schooling in Sophia High School. She graduated in Psychology from Mount Carmel College. After her Miss India contest, she shifted base permanently to Mumbai along with her family -- not only for modelling but also for her studies. Vaishali was doing ramp shows in Bangalore and a top model. Her first show was when she was only 16. But her major break and entry in the acting world was with her first commercial for Ponds Dreamflower Talc. Later, she was seen in ads like Tanishq, Compaq and Raymonds. She recently made her Bollywood debut in Kal Kissne Dekha.

Apart from these, we have also had Rekha Hande, who won the Miss India Universe title in 1983, Rani Jeyraj who walked away with Miss India World crown in 1996 and Sara Corner, who smiled with her Miss India World title in 2001. — TNN

Help Miss Namibia

By Andreas Thomas

Windhoek — With less than two weeks to go before the 2009 Miss Universe finals in Bahamas, Miss Namibia 2009, Happie Ntelamo, is yet to secure sponsorship to enable her compete in the beauty pageant.

Ntelamo is expected to represent Namibia at the 58th Miss Universeat on August 23 but currently does not have enough money to undertake the trip.

However, Ntelamo is optimistic that with fundraising campaigns underway they would be able to raise funds for her trip to the Caribbean island.

"I can’t wait to go represent Namibia at such a global event and I am counting on the goodwill of fellow Namibians, especially the corporate sector," said Ntelamo, a final year law student at the University of Namibia.

She said they would keep on knocking on doors for support.

On Thursday, Ntelamo paid a courtesy call to Namibian Prime Minister Nahas Angula to brief the premier about the upcoming Miss Universe pageant and her work in general as reigning Miss Namibia.

In an unfortunate twist, a gala dinner that was planned for Saturday, July 25 at the Windhoek Country Club to raise funds for Ntalemo was called off.

About 87 countries and territories will compete for the Miss Universe title.

Namibia was last represented by Anna Nashandi, who competed at Miss Universe in 2006 in Los Angeles, USA.

I won Miss England to prove being black is NEVER an excuse for failure says Linford Christie's niece

By Frances Hardy
Last updated at 1:00 AM on 25th July 2009

Rachel Christie

Winning streak: Miss England Rachel Christie has high aspirations

Rachel Christie is setting out the ground rules for any man brave enough to be a potential suitor - and you can bet there will be plenty, after she became the first black Miss England this week.

She won't countenance indolence, sloppiness or lack of respect. 'I don't want to end up with anyone who will hold me back, treat me like rubbish or be a bad influence,' she says crisply.

'I want someone who'll take me seriously. If that sounds old-fashioned, it's because in personal matters I am.'

Rachel has beauty, attitude and talent - and her aspirations are high. In three years she hopes to compete in the London Olympics - she excels in both track and field events - an ambition fostered by her uncle, Linford Christie.

'He says I have potential. If he didn't think I could do it, he would tell me,' she says.

She shares the steely self-belief that propelled her uncle to the Olympic 100m title. In that way they are similar. In one pertinent way, however, they are not.

It was once said of Christie that he was the most balanced athlete of all time because he had a chip on both shoulders.

As a young man he would rail against the tabloids for their infamous obsession with his 'lunchbox'.

He would inveigh against institutionalised racism in sport; against casual racism in society. A mix of arrogance and hypersensitivity fuelled him.

His niece has similarly robust views, but she seems neither conceited nor temperamental.

And, although her childhood was, as we shall see, marked by both poverty and tragedy, she does not cast herself as disadvantaged just because she is black.

'You hear black kids say: "I can't do anything with my life. I live in a ghetto." I say: "Well, get off your backside and get out of it. Stop making your ethnicity an excuse."

I want to show them you can do anything you want, whatever your colour. I don't like hearing: "I can't do this or that because I'm black."

'They should stop behaving in a way that stereotypes them. If you come across as smart, if you dress nicely and speak well, it shouldn't make a difference if you're black or white. Maybe some people have experienced racial discrimination. Not me.

Rachel Christie Training at the Linford Christie Stadium West London

Fast track: The 21-year-old training for the 2012 Olympic qualifiers

'My main focus in winning Miss England is to show black kids that they can be whatever they want to be. If they sit about moaning and being negative, they won't get on. So my message is: "Just go out and do the best you can."'

Rachel, it would seem, has lived by this adage since her own young life disintegrated into chaos when her father was murdered in a street brawl over drugs. She was just eight years old when he was stabbed to death.

She was born into a West London sink estate in 1988 - the family had a cramped council flat - the daughter of Linford's younger brother Russell and his partner Diana, a white Irish Catholic.

'My main focus in winning Miss England is to show black kids that they can be whatever they want to be'

Russell, two years younger than Linford, was born in London to their Jamaican parents, James and Mabel Christie.

Although both brothers were blessed with sporting talent, it was Linford who converted his into real success. Russell ignored his athletic abilities, routinely ending up in trouble with the law.

In 1989, while Linford was winning laurels as the captain of Britain's men's athletics team, his brother was starting a three-year jail sentence for attacking a former lover with a baseball bat.

Five years later he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years for theft and beating another girlfriend.

Rachel Christie

Victorious: Rachel becomes Miss England 2009 earlier this week

Rachel, now 21, remembers her dad's frequent absences and the quiet stoicism of her mother. She also recalls visits to her father in Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight.

'I can still see those massive black gates. It looked like the entrance to a dungeon,' she says.

'We went in, saw Dad and he was smiling as always. Then Mum took us crabbing at the seaside. It was the first time we'd been to a beach where you could lift the seaweed and see crabs in the rock pools.'

She insists that the intervals when her father was at home were happy. 'He was a good family man, devoted to his kids.'

'I heard Mum saying "Yes, yes, that's him", as if someone was describing Dad. Then suddenly she looked like a ghost'

She is fiercely loyal to his memory and refuses to admit to a scintilla of shame about his law-breaking. He was also a philanderer. Rachel's half-sister, Leanne, who is 20 and born to a different mother, is evidence of this.

They met when they were six years old: 'I couldn't believe who she was. I thought: "How come she's my sister? Where did she come from?"' Rachel smiles ruefully at the memory. But still she refuses to condemn her father.

The day when the relative peace of her young world was shattered remains scorched into her memory. Her father had been absent from home for days when Diana made a call to the police.

'I heard Mum saying "Yes, yes, that's him", as if someone was describing Dad. Then suddenly she looked like a ghost. The colour drained from her, her eyes widened, her face dropped.

'I will never forget her face. Then she just said: "He's dead." I was sitting there with my older brother, James. I didn't cry.

Coming out on top: Rachel with second place Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge on the right and third placed Viki Bailey

'I didn't see his body in the morgue, but I saw him at the funeral. The coffin was open and he didn't look like Dad. He was a big man, 6ft 1in and stocky, and he looked so thin and pale. That was when the grief kicked in.

'I didn't realise it then - I was a little kid - but I got depressed. I had to learn how to overcome it by myself. I had to build up my strength and confidence.'

While Rachel was nursing her own loss, her mother, who was pregnant with her fourth child when Russell Christie was murdered, steeled herself to raise her children alone.

Aside from Rachel and James, 23, she also has Rhease, 14, and Rebecca, 11. They moved to a council house in West Kensington.

'Mum didn't want us staying on the estate. It was rough,' says Rachel with quiet understatement.

'Mum always gave us a massive plate of food - she still does - and had a tiny bit for herself'

The Christie children were dressed in hand-me-downs; there was no family car and they walked for miles across London to their state schools, Diana making the trek twice a day to escort them. She made sacrifices so they would not go without.

'Mum always gave us a massive plate of food - she still does - and had a tiny bit for herself,' recalls Rachel.

Underpinning the family was the reliably constant presence of her grandfather - Linford's father - James Christie, who by then was a widower, an upright and fiercely religious man who took Rachel to Sunday worship every week at his Pentecostal church.

Rachel remains close to him and divides her time between his house in Acton, West London, and the family home in which she was raised.

At some point in her young life she grew determined to make the most of herself. 'I was 16 when I knew I wanted to succeed, to change things,' she says.

Was her Uncle Linford a positive influence? 'I didn't realise at the time, but he must have been,' she says.

'We would all go round to Grandad's and watch his races on the telly. It was quiet until the gun went off, then we'd all be cheering until the house shook. Grandad would be shouting: "Come on Linford!"'

Rachel attended a multi-cultural, all girl convent school - Maria Fidelis in Camden, North London - which, despite the lustre of its name and smart uniform, was a tough school.

Inspiration: Linford Christie, Rachel's uncle, crosses the finishing line to clinch the 100m gold medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics

She was ribbed and heckled for being skinny. 'I was tall. I had no hips. Girls being girls, they would say horrible things. But I never cried, it just made me stronger.'

She mixed with girls who got pregnant in their teens, smoked and drank, but she chose a different course. Did she ever take drugs?

She looks genuinely aghast. 'No! I'd never touch them for fear of getting in trouble with my big brother. He's very protective. I'm glad he's like that. When Dad died, he took the father's role.'

Academically, she failed to distinguish herself, but she excelled in drama and sport, qualifying as a fitness instructor.

When she was 19 - the age her uncle was when he took up running in earnest - she started to train for the 400m and heptathlon at the stadium named after him in West London, and at Brunel University, Middlesex.

James, also an athlete, trains there too. Linford mentors her and her coach is Ron Roddan, the man credited with turning her uncle into a world-beater.

'I train for two hours every day. I've been sick with the effort, but my uncle tells me to push, to be stronger, go faster. He doesn't take messing about. He doesn't do nonsense.

'I went warm-weather training in Portugal - my team manager paid out of his own pocket because I've got so little money. But I realised I had the talent. And I know I have the will.'

'Linford wants me to stand on my own two feet. He doesn't dish out cash every second'

For all her self-confidence, Rachel Christie does not come across as a braggart. Her voice is soft and low, but her resolve is steely.

She has chosen a taxing route out of poverty, and money remains tight, but that is precisely what fires her to succeed.

Her father's wider family has chosen not to throw money at her. 'Linford wants me to stand on my own two feet. He doesn't dish out cash every second. If he did, I'd be sitting at home on the couch,' she smiles.

That, too, was one of the reasons she was first inspired to try modelling. She had been spotted by scouts several times as a teenager, but always resisted applying to an agency.

She is 5ft 10in, so she has the catwalk credentials. What held her back?

She fumbles for an explanation, but it seems she was always such a tomboy that she didn't think she'd have a chance.

But here she is today, elegant in a floral mini-skirt and stilettos, poised on the cusp of modelling success. In November, she will compete for the Miss World crown in South Africa.

What does she covet most, the Miss World title or an Olympic gold? 'First I have to win Miss World,' she laughs, 'then the future is on the track. I really love athletics, but I have to pay the bills and that's why I went into modelling.'

She says there is no room for a man in her life at present. 'Obviously I'm interested in men, but I haven't got a boyfriend. I've only ever had one,' she admits.

Was she in love? 'No,' she says firmly. 'I didn't love him. He didn't have any ambition.'
What did he do? 'Nothing! That was why he wasn't right for me.' Did he use you?

'No, I never allowed that to happen. I have my self-respect.' I ask if she lost her virginity to that ex-boyfriend. 'I am not telling you that!' she retorts, still quiet but firm.

'No matter what we've been, my family has always remained proper, presentable.'

These days she is coming round to her grandfather's point of view on pre-marital sex. 'He used to say: "Wait until you're married or it's fornication." And I would be like: "Yeah. Whatever."

Now I understand what he means because all men want one thing and they'll tell you anything to get it. But if they marry you and then say they love you, you know it's true.'

Clearly, Rachel Christie is an admirable young woman. Certainly she will inspire other young black women to follow their dreams.

Perhaps she will be the next Kelly Holmes or Naomi Campbell. But for her part, she simply says she wants to do things that would have made her father proud of her.

Paradoxically, she misses him more as she gets older: 'He would have been thrilled to see me win Miss England,' she says.

Of course he would. And I suspect - although she would never admit it, perhaps not even to herself - that Russell Christie's short, squalid life of crime and drug-taking has been the most potent force in firing his daughter's own astonishing success.

Men should not take me for granted —Sandra Otohwo

Source: Stylish Spot
Sandra Otohwo
Age : 20
Height : 185cm

A renowned writer once said that some people are born great, some have greatness bestowed unto them while others achieve greatness; Otohwo Fowe Sandra, she wanted to achieve greatness. Been born into a polygamous family and losing her dad early in life, she strived to make a difference. Looking back now, Sandra would not be sad with what she has achieved so far; being the reigning Miss Universe MBGN 2009 is worth talking about and she did chat with RITA IGHODALO on how she hopes to bring home the crown to Nigerians as a would- be- Miss Universe come August 23rd, 2009 in Bahamas.

Tell us about your formative years?
I was born and bred in Benin, I attended Georgina Model nursery and primary school then moved to Ebenezer Secondary School and presently I am a 200 level Theatre Arts student of the University if Benin.

Is this your first attempt in any beauty pageant?
No, my first pageant was at the Face of Niger Delta 2007 and I was the second runner up and in 2008 I won Miss Delta where I qualified for the MBGN pageant and in 2009 I emerged Miss Universe MBGN. This is my first attempt in the MBGN pageantry.

How was your experience at the MBGN camp?
It was not as stressful as I envisaged, since I am a Theatre Arts student, I wake up very early for rehearsals and exercises and this was how things went in the camp, there were lots of exercises and rehearsals and since I am used to it, that part of the camp did not weigh me down. It was all about being yourself and being ladylike. In general, the experience was not bad nor hard I enjoyed myself and the camp helped me to meet a lot of pretty and intelligent girls. Sometimes, I was down because I felt that I could not make it other times, I had hope because the girls had their own area of beauty, some girls may be intelligent but could not cat walk well while some were beautiful but not intelligent. But what I later realized was that MBGN involves an embodiment of everything.

Did it ever occur to you that one day you would become a beauty queen in Nigeria?
Yes, it dawned on me when I won the Miss Delta pageant and I got a ticket for MBGN after the screening but originally, I thought that I would just be a great fashion designer and models will wear my cloths I did not know that I will be a model until I got into the pageantry.

Were your parents in support of it?
I lost my dad seven years ago; when my first pageant came my mum was worried because I had to travel to Akwa Ibom which is about seven hours from Benin. It took the help of my brother, pastor and manager to convince my mother to allow me go and after my performance there, she believed in me and she allowed me go and when MBGN came she just gave me the push that I needed.

Tell us about your family background?
I grew up in a very interesting polygamous family, my dad had four wives and sixteen children I happen to be the fifteenth child. I love all my siblings and I thank God for my family.

What is your opinion on polygamy?
I do not encourage it, and I beg the young ones to desist from it because those involved are the only ones that know how it hurts.

Has it been challenging as a queen?
Yes it has, and the two most challenging things have been school and people. School in the sense that I missed a lot when went for the pageant and I resumed school fully about two weeks before my examination. It was very stressful I missed classes and I had to ask for people's opinion and their note books on the lectures that I missed. On the issue of people a lot of them deal with me on what they have heard about me even if they did not know me and they judge me by what they hear and give their opinion on who I am so far it has been challenging but I have learnt to ignore what people say about me I have come to understand that when you give room to ear say it weighs you down so I have decided not to listen to the rumour mongers so that I can achieve what I want to achieve.

How would you describe yourself?
I am a very hyper active person although I can be calm when I want to be. I tell people not to take me for granted for the fact that I am hyper active does not make me unserious. I am a goal getter if I put my mind to it, I achieve it, and no matter how tough it might look I must achieve it.

What gave you the confidence to go for the pageant?
In 2007, my friend Erika Okundaye won MBGN Miss Tourism and she encouraged me to go into the pageantry that I had the looks and stature to be a queen in Nigeria she gave me the push and taught me how to walk and told me to always look into the mirror to say that I am beautiful. Pastor Jonathan also encouraged me.

What is your body statistics?
I am 32: 27: 39

What do you think about your body figure?
I am a perfect picture of what an African woman should look like; I am a real African beauty.

What does your boyfriend think about your shape?
I do not have a boy friend and I do not know what those out there think about my shape all I know is that I am beautifully created by God.

When do you intend having a boyfriend?
Right now I have a lot of things that I am concentrating on, I know that for now there will be no relationship for me until God decides.

What do you look out for in a man?
He should display a sense of responsibility and should be someone that I can cope with, he should be God fearing and must be a typical Nigerian, I love Nigerian men.

What part do you admire most in your body?
My eyes, because I feel they are the most beautiful part of my body. If there is any part of my body that I will not tamper with it must be my eyes because they are the windows to my soul.

Who are your role models?
I like Monachi Nwakwo, Omowunmi Akinifesi, Kendra Etopuma and Tyra Banks.

As a queen, has there been any difference in your life?
Yes, I have an entirely busy schedule, I have to balance my academics with working as a queen and above all I have to look good all the time.

What are your likes and dislikes?
I love things that can just blow me away and will make me say ooo! That's so beautiful, I like people that are resourceful, discuss ideas and people that like to grow

Do you have any pet project?
The Silver Bird family is doing a collaborative effort to fight breast cancer so we are engaging in breast cancer awareness.

What do you have to say to the organizers?
To Silver Bird family, I want to say that I love them all, I want to thank them for giving me this opportunity for believing, trusting and turning my life around for good I couldn't have gone this far without them

What should we expect from you in the nearest future?
I hope to represent Nigeria my country in the Miss Universe International which is coming up on the 23rd of August 2009 in Barhamabas I hope to come back and make Nigeria proud. Nigeria will see more of me in different aspects of entertainment; I am not going to let that off the hook yet.

What make up item would you not leave your house without?
My lip gloss, because when I wear them it makes me want to talk and it gives me the confidence that I need any time that I want to talk. Lip gloss reminds me of how beautiful my lips are.

Hoang Yen believes in ability to succeed!

17:22' 24/07/2009 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – “Fans have transmitted their strength and belief to me for this pageant, so I believe in my ability to succeed,” supermodel Vo Hoang Yen told Dat Viet newspaper ahead of her impending trip to the Bahamas for the Miss Universe 2009 pageant.

How have you prepared for the upcoming trip?

I’m going to the Bahamas on August 1 to participate in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant. I have nearly completed everything. I only need to pack my things and set off.

My clothes for this trip will include ao dai designed by ABC ao dai fashion and a dozen night gowns and modern fashions by designer Cong Tri and over 20 sets of clothes of my own, totalling nearly 40 sets.

Foreign language, particularly English, has been the weakness of Vietnamese contestants at international pageants, how about you?

I believe in my English because I have studied English since I was a little girl and it has improved so far. Communication is often a weakness for Vietnamese contestants so they can’t show themselves off. I see my English as my forte in this pageant, and it will help me to win people’s sympathy.

What will be your image in this contest?

My style at Miss Universe 2009 will be diversified and versatile. You will see a Vo Hoang Yen, Vietnam’s representative, who is not dependent on any model. She will be very dynamic, unaffected and youthful at outdoor activities and sometimes we will be very smart and noble at evening parties.

Fans’ expectations of you are great, so does that put pressure on you?

I would like to thank everyone. I’m very happy to be listed at the top of the online vote on the Miss Universe website, and be supported by not only Vietnamese but foreign friends. I’m lucky to be highly applauded by many foreigners. Fans have transmitted their strength and belief to me for this pageant, so I believe in my ability to succeed.

How do you feel at this moment?

Cheerful is the most accurate word to describe my feelings at this moment. I’m going to the Bahamas alone but I know that I will have interesting experiences during this competition. I will discover the Bahamas with contestants from all over the world. I believe that I will make many new friends.

* Hoang Yen temporarily ranks first in the online vote on the official website of the Miss Universe 2009, with 13581 votes, followed by Miss Universe Indonesia 13204 votes and Miss Zambia.

Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar

Miss South Africa 2008 takes to her role like a seasoned celebrity. Tatum Keshwar has not stopped since she was crowned Miss South Africa on Dec. 15 at Sun City Resort. It has been a whirlwind of activity ranging from photo shoots to radio and television interviews, to Audi Fashion Week.

Tatum has handled the spotlight like a pro, and despite her sophisticated looks and exotic beauty, her managers, Sun International report that she is a delightfully grounded and warm hearted young woman.

Tatum’s diary is already full with social events like; Audi Fashion Week, the J & B Met, and Bobby Skinstad’s Cape Town Tens Rugby Prize-giving to attend. Later in the year Tatum will compete in the Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas and the Miss World pageant which hopefully will once again be hosted in Johannesburg. She will lend her status to several worthy causes including Tapologo Aids Hospice, Sun International’s key corporate social investment initiative and Reach for a Dream.

Tatum’s first visit to Tapologo Aids Hospice in February is eagerly anticipated by both the patients and the dedicated nursing staff.

Tatum is 24 and has a Psychology Degree from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Prior to moving to Johannesburg for the year of her reign, she lived in Durban with her family.

Tatum realised her childhood dream when she won Miss SA 2008. It wasn't the first time she’d entered Miss South Africa; she was a finalist in the competition in 2005.

“Being a previous contender gave me the strength and courage to believe in myself and it gave me a second chance to prove my potential,” says Tatum.

Tatum is unusually beautiful, tall, lithe and lean. Her Indian ancestry gives her an exotic allure and her height gives her the advantage of being able to wear clothes beautifully. She has a vibrant personality that perfectly complements her beauty. She thinks a person's style should reflect their personality and loves Coco Chanel’s fashion adage; “Less is more”. Tatum’s understated elegance is her trademark.

Her hobbies and interests include yoga which she practices twice a week, modelling, reading, weight training and extreme sports. She admires former Miss SA’s, Jo-Ann Strauss and Basetsana Makgalemele-Khumalo for their continued success.

Tatum won the title Model of the Year in 2005 and was the winner of this year’s Durban Model of the Year Competition. Tatum was also a contestant on the third season of the reality modelling competition “Revlon Supermodel”, which aired on SABC3 from November to December 2007. She loves catwalk work and is currently appearing in Audi Fashion Week.

Heidi Montag To Perform At Miss Universe Pageant

Heidi Montag
The 'Hills' star and aspiring singer is set to perform at the competition, which airs August 23 on NBC.

By Jocelyn Vena

On August 23, "Hills" star and aspiring pop singer Heidi Montag will be taking part in the Miss Universe pageant — but not as a contestant.

Heidi busted out a few notes during her short stint on "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" earlier this summer, but this time around Heidi will perform her song "Turn Ya Head," off her album, Unleashed, on the pageant stage, according to "Access Hollywood."

Fellow performers will include Flo Rida, singing "Right Round" and "Jump" during the swimsuit competition, and Kelly Rowland singing "When Love Takes Over" with French DJ David Guetta during the evening-gown portion of the competition.

Heidi has always had musical aspirations. She told MTV News earlier this year how she's wanted to break into the music industry since she was a kid. "I've wanted to do music since I could talk," she said. "I used to do plays and singing and voice lessons and practice Britney routines when I was, like, 12. This is the biggest dream of my life."

For Unleashed, Heidi worked with some big names, like Cathy Dennis, who wrote Katy Perry's smash hit "I Kissed a Girl." "I just love making fun music, like Lil Wayne," she said. "He'll do a rock song, and then he'll do a rap song. I get to choose my own songs. It's something I love doing. I'm having so much fun doing it, and it's not too much pressure. It's more on my own."

Pamela Bianca Manalo left Wednesday night for the Bahamas where she will compete in the 2009 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant on August 23.

At the send-off party at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Manalo, 22, said she is ready and challenged to bring the title once again to the Philippines.

“I believe that if you really want something, you have to give it your 101 percent,’’ said the former flight attendant, who stands 5’10’’.

In preparing for the pageant, Manalo said she took language courses, reviewed Philippine history, geography, economics, and arts and culture, and brushed up on her knowledge about the Bahamas.

The beauty queen has also undergone on-cam training, like hosting and angles, plus hair and make-up lessons since she will have to do her own hair and make-up during the Miss Universe pageant.

Manalo is a sister of Miss World semifinalist Katherine Manalo-Hernandez.

Their aunt is former Miss Philippines International Nini Ramos Licaros.

She has been taking part in humanitarian missions to uplift the plight of poor Filipinos, and improving the morale of the country’s wounded soldiers.

She also finds time to take part in community-based projects. “I am very thankful that my family has always been blessed but I’m also concerned about the plight of the poor families in our community.”

“Before I joined Bb. Pilipinas, I’ve always been happy to volunteer for Gawad Kalinga in building houses for the poor, joining medical missions and participating in our community’s feeding programs,’’ Manalo said.

When she competed in the 2009 Bb. Pilipinas pageant, Manalo also won special awards such as the Manila Bulletin Reader’s Choice Award, Miss Natasha, Miss Philippine Airlines, and Best in Swimsuit.

Prior to the competition, Manalo stood out in cheerleading during high school and college. She also dabbled in modeling when she was 14 and also tried her hand at TV hosting. During her safety training as a flight attendant, she graduated first honorable mention among 75 cabin crew members.

If she wins the Miss Universe pageant, Manalo will be the third Filipina to win the title. The past winners were Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran

Mayra Matos ahora se siente reina

jueves, 23 de julio de 2009
Mariela Fullana Acosta / Primera Hora

Miss Plastic Hungary contest seeking "new" faces

By Gergely Szakacs Gergely Szakacs – Wed Jul 22, 9:16 am ET

BUDAPEST (Reuters Life!) – Most beauty queens would go pale when asked about cosmetic surgery. But face lifts, breast implants or other "body work" are the requirements for contestants of the Miss Plastic Hungary pageant.

"Ever had plastic surgery to become beautiful? Are you proud of your body? Would you like to put yourself to the test?," says the website www.missplastichungary.hu which advertises the pageant, planned for October 9.

A Hungarian company is planning to stage the beauty contest, which it says is the first of its kind, for women who have had cosmetic surgery in a bid to do away with the stereotypes still attached to beauty operations in Hungary.

The contest is open to women aged 18-30 or above 30 in the "dame" category. More than 100 entrants have already signed up.

But a plain botox injection will not suffice.

"The entry requirement is a surgical procedure done under general or local anesthesia," said Reka Bodis, press director of the pageant.

"Unfortunately, people in Hungary are still rather negative about ladies who have had (cosmetic) surgery and there are also a lot of stereotypes going about," Bodis said. "We are not seeking to promote extremely large breasts and the like."

She said the idea first came up about 10 years ago, but back then the pageant could not take place for lack of what she called "sufficient material."

"In those days, there weren't that many beautiful girls who have had plastic surgery, but now we can almost say (the idea to have such a contest) is quite natural," Bodis said.

Affordable prices and the quality of service available at private clinics have recently made Hungary a popular destination for cosmetic surgery patients.

Medical tourism website Treatment Abroad, which caters to the needs of British clients, touts Hungary as offering "a range of excellent healthcare which visitors can take advantage of at a much lower price than in the UK."

It says a face or neck lift can cost around 5,000 sterling in Britain, whereas in Hungary it costs a mere 2,000 excluding flights and lodging.

While the Miss Plastic pageant is primarily aimed at Hungarian contestants, foreigners with a residence in Hungary may also apply.

"The whole thing is about harmony, that's what the contest seeks to emphasize," Bodis said.

"Let's not forget that there are ladies who have had new perspectives open up for them thanks to plastic surgery, who could get rid of their complexes with an operation and can now have a more complete life."

MISS Universe Australia Rachael Finch has revealed her steely competitive core - and "an amazing spiral pass" - on The Footy Show.

Putting to shame other celebs who've gone in the show's "So You Think You Can Play" challenge, Finch impressed judge Scott Prince with her "amazing spiral pass".

"We've had Richard Reid (of The Today Show), who'd never touched a football ... she did better than him," The Footy Show producer Stephen Morton said.

The former touch football rep, who'll be seen during the show televised from Suncorp Piazza tonight, knew better than to rock up and do the chip'n'chase, take bombs, etcetera with her usual pageant face on.
Related Links

"But she certainly made Scott Prince and Fat (host Paul Vautin) look quite ugly -- and that was without flowing frocks and tiaras and make-up," Morton said.

"She's very competitive in the list of who we've done so far. She's also a competitive girl, so she was quite hard on herself. But unfortunately ... we couldn't let her have two takes."

Finch wasn't the only person in TV land showing the strain yesterday.

Veteran Channel Nine political reporter Spencer Jolly and his cameraman David Chee were seen having a barney outside the George Street executive building.

"It was more a verbal stoush with a wee bit of push and shove," one onlooker told us.

"They were fairly animated. There was a lot of finger-pointing going on ... but there were no punches thrown."

A Nine source said it was simply a matter of Spencer wanting Dave, who was busy with audio plugs in his ears, to catch some footage of the villains du jour, some evasive shipping company executives.

"A fairly typical occurrence in a high-pressure situation," he said.

The 2008 titleholder, Illawarra glamour girl Katie Richardson, crowned her successor at the Star City Casino in Sydney late last night.

The 24-year-old Canberra winner was up against 19 other finalists, including Albion Park teenager TJ Viney, who finished in the top eight.

Ms Lavers will now represent Australia at the Miss World competition in Johannesburg, South Africa on December 12.

Meantime, Katie Richardson said she was looking forward to winding up her Miss World Australia duties.

''I feel really good and very excited,'' the 2008 winner told the Mercury ahead of the ceremony.

''It has been wonderful but it will also be nice to move on as well, I don't think you could sustain this for the rest of your life.''

In her year as Miss World Australia, Ms Richardson travelled to South Africa, New Zealand, Japan and Hong Kong as an ambassador and attended countless functions and charity fundraisers.

She said her year as the titleholder was ''the highlight of my life so far''.

''It has just been wonderful. I have learnt so much about myself and how to relate to people and network and the worth of people and how important it is to maintain relationships,'' she said.

''I really enjoyed the travel to Japan and Hong Kong and the different cultures and the excitement of cities such as Tokyo.''

Now that Ms Richardson no longer has full-time Miss World Australia duties, she has moved into a full-time job in sales at Wave FM.

She will also return to the University of Wollongong to finish her course in nutrition and she later hopes to be accepted into the Graduate School of Medicine.

And her advice to her newly crowned successor?

''Just to make the most of it while you have it because then I don't think you can finish up with any regrets,'' Ms Richardson said.

''And also to appreciate what you have, it is important to focus on the positives and not the negatives.''

Miss Puerto Rico 2010

Mariela Fullana Acosta / Primera Hora

Misión: ayudar a Nicaragua

Linford Christie's niece is first black Miss England

Linford Christie's niece is first black Miss EnglandLinford Christie's niece is first black Miss England

The first black Miss England said today she wept with joy when she won the contest, and spoke of her hope that she will act as a role model for young people.

Rachel Christie, 20, the athlete niece of Olympic 100 metres gold medallist Linford Christie, said it felt like a "dream" when she was announced winner of the contest last night, beating more than 50 other finalists.

"It means the world; obviously anyone would say that, but it really does mean so much to me," she said.

"One of my reasons for doing Miss England in the first place was because I wanted to show people, the younger generation especially - I have younger brothers and sisters - I wanted to show them that you can do something positive with your life and, whoever you are, you can be who you want and whatever you want to be if you just put your mind to it and have ambition and determination."

Ms Christie, who lives with her mother, Diana, in a council flat in West Kensington, along with two brothers and one sister, said her Uncle Linford was an "inspiration".

She said it was her ambition to compete in the 2012 Olympics.

Ms Christie, who specialises in the heptathlon event, has won athletics medals at major UK competitions, such as the Triple A and South of England Championships, and trains at the stadium in Hammersmith, west London, which is named after Linford.

She said she had not yet spoken to her uncle about her victory last night as her mobile phone battery had gone dead.

But she said: "He has been an inspiration to me."

Ms Christie, whose father, Russell, died when she was eight years old, said her mother, Diana, had been there to greet her as she was crowned Miss England.

She said her mother, a personal trainer who is currently unemployed, was "really, really happy" about her victory.

She said: "I have always been strong and my mum made me a strong person."

Ms Christie denied that the competition, which was picketed by protesters last night, was sexist.

She said: "I think people stereotype Miss England. It is not just about your looks at all.

"It is not just a modelling competition.

"It is about your personality, it is about you as a person and everything about you."

She added that she was having difficulty believing that she had won the contest.

Ms Christie, who was competing as Miss London City, was chosen by a panel of judges including model Caprice.

She said she had been "shocked" when she won the competition.

"I am just shocked, I cannot believe that I am sitting here as Miss England 2009, it is overwhelming."

She added that she was looking forward to representing England in the next Miss World final due to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in December.

Estibaliz Pereira, la "Miss España esquiva"

Mabel Redondo

Linford niece crowned Miss England

Rachel Christie has been crowned Miss England 2009

(UKPA) – 23 minutes ago

Linford Christie's athlete niece has been celebrating after being crowned the first black Miss England in the competition's history.

Rachel Christie, 20, who is on course to appear at the London 2012 Olympics, chased down the competition to claim the prestigious prize at the event in central London.

Kat Hodge, a 21-year-old soldier decorated for bravery in Iraq, came second in the Grand Final, which was decided after a public vote.

Londoner Ms Christie, who specialises in the heptathlon, was one of the bookies' favourites to win the competition and will now compete for the Miss World crown in South Africa later this year.

She has won medals at major UK race meets such as the AAA and South of England championships, and trains at the stadium in Hammersmith, west London, named after her uncle Linford.

Before winning Ms Christie - who was competing as Miss London City - told event organisers: "My ambition in life is to compete and win gold in the 2012 Olympics.

"I would also love to do well in Miss England, I want to be successful in whatever I choose to do in life."

Lance Corporal Kat Hodge, 22, from Tunbridge Wells, has been in the Army for five years and was awarded a commendation from her unit, the 1st Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment for her actions during a posting in 2005 in Basra.

She said ahead of Monday night's vote: "By no stretch do I think I am the most beautiful girl in England, but for me this is not what Miss England is about. I think the winner should be beautiful on the inside as well."

The pageant was marred by spectators who gathered outside the entrance of Metropole Hilton Hotel and denounced the competition as sexist.

Carrie Prejean (Of Course) is Writing a Book

miss-california.jpgFormer Miss California, Carrie Prejean, who was such a pain to the Miss Universe franchise (an organization that should be completely immune to diva) got canned for not showing up to her contractual obligations. So ahem, she uh...quit. Right? Stopped showing up? Quit. Then lost her crown.

So now she's going to write a book making herself out to be the victim of a horrible media who hates conservatives and makes her out to look stupid any chance they get. We're presuming it won't be available under fiction.

Anyway, we hear there's an opening for Alaska governor since Miss Prejean is clearly stealing Sarah Palin's schtick.

Entire half-true press release below:

REGNERY ANNOUNCES PLANS TO PUBLISH

DE-THRONED MISS CALIFORNIA CARRIE PREJEAN

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Regnery Publishing announced today it has signed a
publishing contract with former Miss California Carrie Prejean. Her new book, Still Standing, will be released in November 2009.

Prejean attracted national attention when she answered a question at the Miss USA Pageant defending traditional marriage. The unprecedented personal attacks that ensued eventually culminated in Prejean being stripped of her Miss California crown. But the 22-year-old won the respect of millions for modeling something other than evening gowns and swimsuits - the courage of standing up for her convictions.

Now she will tell her side of the story, answering such questions as
what happened behind the scenes at the pageant, why she answered the
Perez Hilton question as she did, what really led to her losing the Miss California crown, and how she has been forced to battle the left's double-standard on free speech and the bias against conservatives - particularly conservative women - who stand up for their beliefs.

Prejean is represented by Lee Hough with Alive Communications, Inc.

The day the Philippines conquered the universe

FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo Updated July 21, 2009 12:00 AM

Photo is loading...
Gloria Diaz reacts with a euphoric smile as soon as she’s named Miss Universe in Miami, Florida, on July 21 (July 20 US Time), 1969, the first ever Filipina to bring home the coveted crown

Her answer came quick and easy, and she didn’t stammer nor hesitate at all, showing her presence of mind and grace under pressure.

Aboard Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong, along with fellow Astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, had just landed on the moon (“One small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind,” said Armstrong), the first man ever to accomplish that feat, and Miss Universe pageant host Bob Barker, euphoric like every human on earth, read the critical and decisive question to each of the five finalists, four of whom inside a sound-proof cubicle: If the man on the moon should come down to Earth and visit your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?

Unruffled, the 18-year-old petite Bb. Pilipinas-Universe answered, “Why, I guess I would do for him what I always do. Since he has been away on the moon for so long, he would want a change.”

That, among other winning qualities, helped Gloria Diaz clinch for the Philippines its first ever Miss Universe crown (followed four years later, in 1973, by Margie Moran in Greece). Soon after, US Pres. Richard Nixon came for a visit and he mentioned in his speech, “Americawas conquered the moon but the Philippines conquered the universe.”

That was 40 years ago today (July 20 US Time) and history, as far as Filipinos are concerned, will forever put those two earth-shaking milestones — yes, conquests! — in tandem.

But did you know that Gloria first ended in a tie with Miss Finland Harriet Erickson, with 31 votes each? (Miss Finland would finish first runner-up, followed by Miss Australia Joanne Barrett, second runner-up; Miss Israel Chava Levy, third runner-up; and Miss Japan Kikuyo Ohsuka, fourth runner-up)?

Recalled journalist Gloria Garchitorena-Goloy (who chaperoned Gloria Diaz to Miami, Florida, where the 1969 Miss Universe pageant was held) in a series of articles she wrote for the Sunday Times magazine (included in her book At The Crossroads), “Since there could only be one Miss Universe, the judges went into a quick huddle to resolve the deadlock. Voting secretly again, they decided between the two. In the meantime, the ranking of the three other finalists was not divulged until after the judges had come up with the final official list. And they gave Miss Philippines seven votes and Miss Finland, five votes. Gloria Diaz had become Miss Universe of 1969!”

Gloria (in excelsis, according to Quijano de Manila in a glowing Free Press article) came home to a heroine’s welcome. And, as they would say, the rest is history.

“I remember that they were making so much fuss about moon landing,” said Gloria about that “moment in time” in an exclusive interview with Funfare, “and when I thought about it, it came like a deja vu.”

Asked what was on her mind when the crown was placed on her head, the irrepressible Gloria, now a mother of three, said, “You know, it’s funny. I was just telling my children that I realized that I had won only the day when I started to work. I went to sleep very late and the next day, they told me to be up by six o’clock. I wondered, ‘What are they talking about?’ Everything hadn’t sunk in yet. Remember, I was 18 and suddenly I was an adult. Before I knew it, I was signing contracts and all that. Well, I told myself, ‘A, okey, parang picnic!’ And I started to work na. It was only much, much later did I realize how much it would change my life.”

During her one-year reign, what Gloria considered most exciting was meeting heads of states and famous people. “And,” she added with a little wink, “goodlooking guys especially from South America.”

All too suddenly, she found herself on top of the world.

“I was an intern and I had never really met many guys. Suddenly, the whole world was opened for you. You travel and, with the money, you could buy nice dresses. For an 18-year-old, having a new dress is really something.”

And the most unpleasant part?

“I always had to sit with sponsors at dinner every night, instead of go home and watch TV or read magazines...and always having a chaperone.”

How did she feel when relinquished her crown to her successor (Marisol Malaret of Puerto Rico)?

“Right that very minute onstage, I realized that nothing was permanent and that you were really, really replaceable. How can I ever teach that to my children? I don’t know. It’s very hard to have that awakening. As soon as I gave up my crown, I lost my limousine to the new winner. It’s a good thing that my mother had arranged for somebody to take us back to the hotel. They were still very nice to me but I was given 24 hours to vacate my room.

“I guess that’s very interesting because even our presidents go through that. That’s why some of them hang on to power for dear life kasi it’s so nice. During your reign, nothing starts without you and you can kind of take your time. Within one year, you think the world couldn’t go on until you arrived.”

Gloria still has the replica of the Miss U crown but not her trophy which she left at the PAL office at a US airport due to excess poundage.

“I don’t know where it is, San Francisco or L.A. They said they shipped it back but I doubt if they ever did. I don’t know where it is. It’s big, as big as I am.”

Had she not become Miss Universe, what would she have been today?

“You know, I always think about that. Maybe I would have been a champion tennis player or a lawyer making millions. Or a politician. Those were my dreams. Or else I would be a plain housewife with many, many children.”

She has only three.

“Thank God,” she said.

Gloria has become one of the country’s finest actresses with an acting trophy to show for it.

How does she think the Miss Universe competition has changed?
”I could say that during my time, hindi pa uso ang mga retoke-retoke. At that time, I guess nothing was false about the contestants, except their eyelashes. Iba na ang laban ngayon. Everyone seems to be having some part enhanced, even having new boobs...including you-know-who.”

Asked if she would do the same if she were 18 again — you know, join the Bb. Pilipinas pageant and earn the right to compete in the Miss Universe contest, Gloria said, why not?

“It was good while it lasted.”

And a great honor to, you know, conquer the universe.

A piece for Freddie Aguilar

I won’t say a word about Freddie Aguilar but I’m printing one of the letters from readers, the one from Ed Valenciano with whose opinion I quite agree. Here it is, as is:

Through your column I wish to comment on the rather harsh remarks of Mr. Freddie Aguilar vs. Gary Valenciano and Charice.

Mr. Aguilar, no doubt, has had his share of fame brought about by the unprecedented fame and international acceptance of his signature composition, Anak. It goes without saying that the Filipino nation basked in the glory of Anak for many years, and our gratitude to Mr. Aguilar goes to him even up to now.

Having said that, I think that he went overboard in his remarks regarding Gary and Charice. He claims that these artists can not be popular abroad unless they sing American songs. He insists that Gary (including Arnel Pineda) and Charice should now start singing Filipino songs abroad and do their country proud.

As far as I am concerned, such is a myopic view of nationalism. Music is supposed to be an international language, and one artist is NOT less patriotic if he becomes famous singing international or American songs. Would it have been possible for Charice to be recognized if she were singing Ang Dalagang Pilipina or Bayan Ko or, for that matter, Anak? Would doors have opened for Charice if she did not perform the songs she did?

Lea Salonga is a respected name in Broadway, not because she sings Filipino songs but because she is a top-rate performer singing Broadway compositions. Lani Misalucha is popular in Las Vegas not because she includes Filipino songs in her repertoire but because she is a good performer. Therefore, if an artist sings his/her own native songs or American songs and succeeds in earning the nod of audiences and producers, it is his/her rendition and performance that earn credits, and not the songs in his/her repertoire.

Might it not be good for Mr. Aguilar to wish our local artists (who are trying to get into the international scene) well and not make such attempts an issue of nationalism (if they do not sing the immortal kundimans of Abelardo, Santiago, San Pedro, et al). I believe there is a place and time to perform such music, but trying to get into the international scene by way of America may not be one of such places or time.

Thank you very much.

Yours,

Miss Wales 2009 Lucy Whitehouse

GORGEOUS Lucy Whitehouse was last night crowned winner of Miss Wales 2009.

The competition held at Cardiff International Arena raised more than £115,000 for charity.

The overjoyed Barry Hospital nurse won the title in front of an audience of 400.

The 21-year-old said: “I had no idea I would win, there were so many more amazing girls there than me here.

“I never thought I would do this but now I want to raise as much money as I can for charity.”
Lucy Whitehouse

The slender blonde added: “In my spare time I enjoy socialising, going to the gym, promotional work, horse riding and spending time with the people I love.

“My achievements so far include representing Swansea in A TV ad, working alongside Joe Calzaghe as a bodyguard, and modelling for Channel 4.

“My main ambition in life is to qualify as a district nurse and be successful in everything I do.

“The competition has given me the opportunity to raise money for a wonderful cause, meet new people and have fun.”

Lucy beat off almost 70 contestants from around Wales to take the title.

A spokesman for the contest said: “Without question, the key objective of the Miss Wales event is to help raise funds for worthy causes. Our commitment to beauty with a purpose mirrors the Miss World ethos, which results in the organisation raising millions for charity on an annual basis.”

The Mr Wales title was won by Mark Tancock, 24, from Swansea.

The Miss Wales competition is sponsored by dress-stop.com in Cardiff. Cash raised at the event will go to the Joshua Foundation, a Welsh charity that provides holidays and other similar experiences for children with terminal cancer.

Carolyn Yapp crowned Miss Jamaica Universe 2009

E-mail

25-year-old Interior Designer Carolyn Yapp crowned Miss Jamaica 2009

Carolyn Yapp, a 25 year old Interior Designer was crowned Miss Jamaica Universe 2009 on Thursday July 16, in a private ceremony at The Refuge at Villa Ronai, attended by the family and friends of the contestants, as well as producers and organizers from Pulse, licensees for the Jamaica preliminary to Miss Universe.

As Miss Jamaica Universe, Carolyn will get the opportunity to represent Miss Jamaica at Miss Universe 2009 in Nassau, The Bahamas on August 23, 2009 before a worldwide audience of close to one billion persons. Visibly elated following her win Carolyn says, “It has always been a dream of mine to be an ambassador for my country and this is my chance! I know the competition will be tough but I’m ready to do my country proud and bring the title home.”

Pageant history

Miss Yapp is something of a pageant veteran, having competed in Miss Jamaica World 2004 where she placed third, and went on to again tie for third prize in the Miss Jamaica Universe 2005 pageant. Following the Miss Jamaica World 2004 competition, Miss Yapp was at the centre of a 'controversy' after making disparaging comments about the 2004 winner Tonoya Toyloy to the media. Following her bid for the 2005 Miss Jamaica Universe crown she was the subject of a scathing feature in the Jamaica Star tabloid.

Regardless, we expect that Jamaica will throw its support behind our new ambassador.

First runner-up was Fallon Harris a 21 year old student at the University of the West Indies and fashion model. Third runner-up was budding model, singer and designer, 19 year old Krystina Black. The judges were well known fashion and beauty personalities Barry Moncrieffe, former principal dancer of the NDTC and fashion designer; Gilou Bauer, Curator of the Mutual Life Gallery and Lois Lake-Sherwood, artist, business executive and diplomat. The winner was the universal choice of all the judges.

Pulse made a special appeal to Jamaicans to come forward to compete for the title, despite giving up the license earlier this year, as the Miss Universe Organization prevailed on the Jamaican company to conduct a contest and produce a Miss Universe entrant from Jamaica. This year is considered especially important for Caribbeans, as the event will be held at Atlantis in the Bahamas, next door to Jamaica. This might be a year in which Jamaica has its best chance, given the event’s presence in the region and the potential of the stunningly beautiful Miss Yapp.

Background

Miss Jamaica Universe 2009 is the daughter of Jean and Hartley Yapp and is originally from Montego Bay. She is a graduate of the University of the West Indies in and did post graduate studies in Interior Design in Florida. She is currently residing in Kingston Jamaica. She will begin immediate preparations for Miss Universe, the finals of which will be held in Nassau, The Bahamas on August 23, 2009. Now in its 58th year, the glamorous event, features some of the world's most beautiful women from 85 countries, with each contestant competing for the right to call herself the most beautiful woman in the world.

Although never having won the title, Jamaica has had significant success at Miss Universe pageants, claiming four top-10 finishes - Sandra Foster, Nicole Haughton, Christine Straw and Kimberley Mais. Several other beauties, including Sanya Hughes, Rachel Stuart, Trudy Ferguson, Justine Willoughby, Bridgette Rhoden and Zahra Redwood, the first Rastafarian beauty queen to appear in a major international pageant, have also raised Jamaica's profile at the international pageant.

Russian Miss World inspires Welsh contestants with her confidence

The 54 women enjoyed lunch with Russian beauty and Miss World 2008 winner Ksenia Sukhinova at Gio’s on Mill lane, Cardiff.

Miss Wales finalist and Miss Bridgend, Jade Phillips, 18, said: “She is absolutely amazing, out of this world. And this is such a great opportunity to meet her. She’s beautiful and such a good role model because she has confidence. And her pictures are absolutely fantastic.”

Tonight Jade and her fellow contestants will take to the stage at Cardiff International for the chance to represent Wales at the Miss World 2009 competition in South Africa later this year.

They donned Welsh flag dresses for yesterday’s midday date, ahead of last night’s Miss Wales charity ball at the Holland House Hotel on Newport Road. Ksenia also went to the ball to celebrate the finalists having raised £100,000 for the competition’s chosen charity, The Joshua Foundation.

The chairwoman of the Miss World empire Julia Morley was to present the first Miss Wales Beauty With A Purpose Award at the ball. Event organiser, Paula Abbandonato, of model company Vibe, said: “The Miss Wales 2009 competition will have blown the roof off any other UK pageant in terms of its support for good causes. To have Miss World come and celebrate that achievement with us is really exciting and will make it an even more special occasion for all the contestants who have worked so hard in the run up to the final.” Entries for Miss Wales 2010 are now open. To be in with a chance you must be Welsh, have Welsh heritage or have lived in Wales for more than five years. You must be aged between 17 and 24 by the time of the Miss Wales grand final and you should never have been married or had children.

Entry deadlines for regional heats are at www.misswales.co.u

Pageant shows the beauty of Colombia

Contest tries to downplay bad images of nation

Contestants show off their gowns and best pageant poses last week after a walkthrough for this weekend's Miss Colombian Independence Contest

Sparkly sequins in yellow, blue and red — the color of the Colombian flag — line beauty queen contestant Sandra Betancur's dress. For weeks, her mother and grandmother helped her make the outfit, decorated with faux orchid petals to represent the exotic flowers grown in her birthplace of Medellin, Colombia.

To some, Medellin conjures images of drug cartels and cocaine. But to Betancur, 18, the city and the rest of Colombia is about beauty.

“I think it's sad that people just show that part. It's not just the bad parts that they show on TV,” said Betancur, Miss Antioquia, one of a dozen girls competing in the 15th annual pageant.

Betancur shows her pride in the city and state of Antioquia with the dress she'll wear in tonight's fantasy gown portion of the Miss Colombian Independence Contest.

The local pageant isn't just about showcasing Colombian beauties at the Kirby Drive Crowne Plaza hotel. It helps the 80,000 Colombian immigrants in the Houston area retain cultural roots. Colombians, like other immigrant communities, often straddle a difficult line, juggling a new life in their adopted country while maintaining bonds to their native land.

But the pageant is more than a don't-forget-where-you-came-from exercise. It also helps battle Colombia's persistent narco image.

“We want to change the image of Colombia abroad,” said Harold Herrera, a native of Colombia and owner of the A&B Art & Beauty Salon on Westheimer Road. “Colombia was only narcotraffickers and guerrillas. We're not all like that.”

The pageant began after another Colombian asked Pearland resident Gladys Salgado to organize an event celebrating Colombia's July 20 independence day.

She agreed on the condition that the event would include a beauty pageant that stars Colombian and Colombian-American women ages 16 to 23. More than half a century ago, Salgado, 66, won the title of carnival queen in her native city of Barranquilla.

“I always liked pageants,” said Salgado, who transformed a wire clothing hanger and some sequins into a crown decorated with golden butterflies during a recent rehearsal.

She's not alone.
Pageants part of culture

More than 300 beauty pageants are held annually in Colombia, celebrating everything from its coffee to potatoes, said Michelle Rocio Nasser, assistant professor of Spanish at Iowa's Grinnell College.

Even women's prisons hold pageants, as featured in the documentary La Corona, which was nominated for an Academy Award last year.

“It's common knowledge that Colombia is a beauty queen country,” said Nasser.

While Colombia has snagged the Miss Universe title only once, Colombians point out that their women win second place often.

“Venezuelans have pageants more for beauty, but for Colombians it's more about culture,” said Herrera, who styles contestants' hair each year. “Pageants are part of the culture of Colombia.”

Until recently, Nasser worked at the University of Houston and wrote a thesis about the local pageant, a subject she knows well since she competed in it in 1996 and won for the most authentic regional garb. She helped make a skirt and apron that included scenery depicting the coffee-growing state of her mother's native Quindio.

“There's this effort to change this image of Colombia internationally. Colombia is no longer dangerous,” said Nasser, whose sister and mother help organize the pageants.

“It's now beautiful. It's also deeply ingrained in the psyche of Colombia,” she said. “All the beautiful women come from Colombia, they say. In a way, they're beautiful because they're Colombian.”
Interviews and dances

Contestants will praise the beauty of Colombia during the interview phase of their competition. To the beat of the Colombian song Las Mujeres de Mi Tierra, or “The Women of My Land,” the contestants perform a choreographed dance while wearing traditional Colombian straw hats and yellow, blue and red skirts.

Instead of a swimsuit competition, the event includes a fantasy dress portion in which contestants wear sometimes revealing dresses depicting where they or their parents were born.
Chance to reconnect

Houston Community College student Karen Franco, 18, wore a beaded dress she bought from Colombia and signifies the congo, a dance performed during the Barranquilla carnival.

Although her parents are from Barranquilla and she speaks Spanish and eats traditional Colombian foods, she didn't immerse herself in the local Colombian community until she signed up for this contest.

“I became very Americanized,” said Franco, who researched her community's folklore for the pageant. “This is the first time I've associated with Colombian people.”

Mister España 2008: "He aprendido a apreciar la belleza masculina"
Miguel R. López. Enviado especial a Cancún

Mister España 2008: "He aprendido a apreciar la belleza masculina"

First-ever Binibining Pilipinas winner dies

MANILA - Celebrities and fashion designers poured out their grief, just moments after first-ever Binibining Pilipinas winner Maria Myrna Sese Panlilio died of gall bladder disease at the Makati Medical Center last night.

Binibining Pilipinas-Universe and actress Maria Isabel Lopez, who had once knocked horns with Panlilio, feels sorry about her death.

Lopez, speaking sadly, said she had already forgiven Panlilio for barring her from attending the Bb. Pilipinas coronation night at the Araneta Coliseum last May. Panlilio cited Lopez's sexy image during the 1980s.

“I respected and understood what she had to do that time,” Lopez said. "I pray for her soul. I am sure she's happy now with the Lord."

Lopez said she will pay her last respects to Panlilio's remains at the Sanctuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park.

Panlilio was an officer of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc., which former beauty titlist Stella Marquez-Araneta heads. She was also the Executive Director of the Nayong Pilipino.

She developed a number of tourist attractions on the site and actively campaigned for the advancement of Philippine tourism. Panlilio, who married Dr. Ramon N. Borromeo, was also a socio-civic leader and TV co-host of beauty expert Ricky Reyes.

When she represented the country at the 1964 Miss Universe, she relished opportunities to socialize. During the beauty pageant's socials events, she attended a Democratic Convention at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California.

Society writer Bob Zozobrado said that early last year, on Panlilio's 65th birthday, she hosted a soiree at the Philippine International Convention Center to help raise funds for cancer victims. This year, she held a simpler party, but her friends and colleagues in the tourism business took time out to donate to her cause just the same.

The death of her daughter, fashion model Patricia Borromeo, in 2003 prompted Panlilio to form the Trisha P. Borromeo Legacy Association, which aims to support the University of the Philippines- Philippine General Hospital Pediatric Cancer Ward.

Patricia, known to all show business people as actor Richard Gomez’s ex-sweetheart, was a very charming lady just like her mom.

Goulle Gorospe, a noted fashion designer who used to dress up Bb. Binibining Pilipinas contestants, said Panlilio was a gracious woman.

The late beauty icon, according to Gorospe, was a noted member of high society.

“The last time I saw her was during actress Liberty Ilagan’s birthday last week. She was so gorgeous. Para siyang hindi tumatanda. I told her she’s lucky to have been associated with both people from show biz and the elite. She just chuckled,” Gorospe reminisced.

Gorospe said he felt sad when Panlilio’s name was dragged into the Maria Isabel Lopez controversy. “I think it wasn’t Myrna’s real sentiment. She was just following orders from above,” shared Gorospe.

Miss Caguas

Glorimar Serrano

Miss Guaynabo, Mariselle Morales Cordero

Masala! meets Miss India 2009 Ekta Chaudhary and Miss India Earth Shriya Kishore 2009

by Amrita Mukherjee
picture: Alan Desiderio/ITP Images

“I judge people by their shoes”

Miss India 2009 Ekta Chaudhary talks about achieving a dream that everyone deemed as unreal.

In an exclusive interview with Masala!, the reigning Miss India talks about her forthcoming Miss Universe pageant and what style means to her.

Did Miss India just happen to you?

People thought I was pursuing an unrealistic dream but that is what I always wanted – to win the pageant.

How has life changed after becoming Miss India Earth?

From being just an ordinary girl, overnight I have been thrown into the limelight. Suddenly, people are interested to know what I eat, what I like to wear et al.

What next?

The Miss Universe pageant. It’s only a few weeks away and I am going to start rigorous training as soon I go to India.

When you are travelling what are the things you always carry with you?

A pair of jeans, I always carry my high-waisted ones. Also a waistcoat, a white shirt, a nice dress and high heels.

What’s your style mantra?

I love colour. I carry clutches in bright yellow, pink and red. I love wearing huge rings, chunky necklaces and paint my nails hot pink and shocking green.

What will you wear to an evening party?

Maybe a pair of jeans with a nice top or a cocktail dress in red, black, green or purple.

Your make-up mantra...

Less is more is my mantra. I believe make-up is meant to enhance your face and not give you a new face. I always use a little bit of base, gloss, mascara and a bronzer in the evening.

What’s the one thing you keep buying?

Shoes. I also judge people by the shoes they are wearing.

“My job is to make a dress look good”

Miss India Earth Shriya Kishore talks Tarun Tahiliani and not being judgemental about fashion.

Simple and warm, Sriya Kishore tells Masala! that her crown comes with opportunities, but responsibilities too.

Did Miss India just happen to you?

I studied hotel management in Manipal and always ensured that my grades were in place. But I wanted to take part in the pageant and worked towards it.

How has life changed now?

The crown comes with a lot of responsibility. And at the same time a whole gamut of opportunities open up for you.

What next?

The Miss Earth pageant. After that you never know what doors can open. But I want to work for the environment.

What are the things you always carry with you when you are travelling?

I like to dress up casually, but smartly. But I cannot imagine going anywhere without my heels.

Your make-up mantra...

Kohl and mascara are must. A pouch with basic make-up is what I always carry around.

What would you wear to a party?

A sari by Tarun Tahiliani or a cocktail dress.

Do you always like what the designers ask you to wear on the ramp?

It is my profession to make a dress look good so I should not be judging the dress at all. As a professional, I cannot be fussy and anyway who says that my taste is the best in the world?

Walcott: It’s too late for Miss Universe

By Joan Rampersad Wednesday, July 15 2009

If asked to Gabrielle Walcott will not represent Trinidad and Tobago (TT) in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant which takes place in the Bahamas next month.

There is just not enough time for either her or any other woman to prepare for the internationally popular beauty competition, said Walcott, the third-placed winner in the Miss World 2008 pageant.

“I understand girls have to be there in the Bahamas in the next two weeks. I would never do myself or our country that injustice or disservice. How could I be prepared in just two weeks?” Walcott told Newsday.

Several broadcast media reports over the past two days claimed Walcott was expected to be approached by the Government to represent this country at the pageant. TT has had two winners at Miss Universe, Janelle Penny Commissiong in 1977 and Wendy Fitzwilliam in 1998, along with a string of semifinalists in recent years. Giselle La Ronde won Miss World in 2006, and again, this country has had successful runner-ups in this competition.

In 2008, Anya Ayoung-Chee represented the country in the Miss Universe in Vietnam, while Walcott went to South Africa for the Miss World competition. Ayong-Chee did not place among the semifinalists but Walcott placed third, and even won the Queen of the Caribbean[/b] prize.

Walcott denied the media reports and said no one from the Government had approached her to be a possible delegate to send to Bahamas. Even so, Walcott said it would be too late for her to get ready to compete.

“I think it’s just too late to be properly prepared. Our girls have done well at that competition before and I don’t want to be one to spoil that record.”

Former pageant trainer Allyson Brown, who has previously helped past delegates to both beauty competitions, was also in the dark about Walcott or any other woman being selected for Bahamas.

“I did not hear anything. I have absolutely no information whatever on that,” said Brown.

According to Miss Universe Inc, 86 countries have already confirmed their attendance with this country listed as a withdrawal along with Antigua & Barbuda and Sri Lanka.

That this country would be without a delegate at Miss Universe and possibly Miss World 2009, stemmed from the previous struggles of former franchise holder Peter Elias to obtain consistent support from the Government and the business community. In 2007, TT did not take part in Miss Universe because of lack of funding, and afterward Government stepped in and supported Valene Maharaj’s entry to Miss World 2007 where she placed third.

Elias could not be reached for comment yesterday. However, after Walcott’s success at Miss World last year, Elias stated that he was giving up the franchise for both competitions.

Ayuntamiento de Santiago reconoce a Miss Universo Amelia Vega

9:56 AM -
