Miss World preparations need full concentration: Pooja Chopra (Interview)

May 31st, 2009 - 9:35 am ICT by IANS Tell a Friend -

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Tired of answering questions about joining Bollywood, Miss India World Pooja Chopra has only the Miss World competition on her mind which she says is taking up all her time and concentration.

“I am tired of answering this question. I can’t tell you how busy I am with Miss World preparations. It demands full concentration and at this moment winning the crown holds top priority in my life,” Chopra told IANS on the sidelines of an event here.

This year the Miss World contest will take place in South Africa, and 23-year-old Chopra says that her preparations for the contest are going on in full swing.

“I start my day at 5.30 a.m. and after a hectic daily schedule I try to hit the bed by 11.00 p.m. I devote equal time to gym, diction, catwalk classes and my daily sessions with the dietician. Apart from this if I have to go to some event, then things become very hectic,” Chopra said.

Elaborating on her preparations, the leggy lass said that the preparations for the international pageant were “very different” from those for Miss India.

“There is a stark difference between the two. The reason is that at the Miss World contest I will be competing with 120 girls from different countries and international standards are to be followed, which means I have to pay extra effort in diction, catwalk and current affairs,” Chopra said.

“The most important thing is that I would be representing India whereas when I participated in Miss India contest I was simply Pooja Chopra. There lies the major difference,” she added.

Chopra is confident of her victory and said that she is giving her 100 percent. And if the nation prays for her victory, she might bring back the crown.

“All I want is support from everyone. Just pray for me,” Chopra said.

Last year, Parvathy Omanakuttan was the first runner-up in Miss World. Reita Faria (1966) was the first Indian to win this crown and after that Aishwarya Rai (1994), Yukta Mukhi (1999), Priyanka Chopra (2000) achieved success.

Supermodel and former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins will return to Adelaide later this year for Myer's spring/summer parades at its Rundle Mall store.

And judging by this exclusive preview photo, her Adelaide appearance will be a colourful one, with bold block colours and splashes of bright paint highlighting the season's theme: the artistry of fashion.

Myer spokeswoman Melissa Sulcs said the brightly coloured campaign was a response to the doom and gloom of the global financial crisis.

"The campaign has taken inspiration from the current economic climate, encouraging people to turn to fashion and art for colour to brighten their days," she said.

It will be Hawkins' second visit to Adelaide this year, after her autumn/winter parades in February, which attracted thousands of fans to Myer's city store.

Myer would not confirm the date of Hawkins' Adelaide parades, but said they would be in late August or early September.

Former Neighbours star Benji Hart is rumoured to also be attending the parades, and may even accompany Hawkins on the catwalk.

Miss USA tours Wilmington schools

WILMINGTON – During her first trip to Wilmington since earning the Miss USA title, 22-year-old Kristen Dalton is visiting area schools, including her alma mater Hoggard High, to encourage kids to work hard and make smart choices.

"I never drank alcohol, never. I never smoked," Dalton said.

While at home, Dalton will be singing at two sporting events and promoting research for breast and ovarian cancer. Despite her hectic schedule, Dalton said she's happy to be home.

"This is where the dream all began. I started out as Miss Greater Wilmington, and then went on to become Miss North Carolina, USA, and now finally I'm Miss USA," she said.

Her mom, Jennie Dalton, said her daughter has been preparing for this moment in the spotlight for years.

"She started when she was three years old," Jennie Dalton said. "This is something she's always wanted. She had to watch everything she said and did."

Dalton said she prefers this type of attention compared to the controversy Miss California endured after the Miss USA Pageant.

"I don't think it took away from the spotlight at all, because that's not really something I'm competing with, is the kind of publicity she's getting," she said.

With her hometown crowd rooting her on, Dalton is getting ready to compete for the Miss Universe crown on Aug. 23 in the Bahamas.

"It makes me feel so secure and so safe whenever I'm away in New York City and when I'm traveling the nation to know that I have such an awesome, strong backbone in my hometown," she said.

After her reign, Miss USA wants to be a motivational talk show host and a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations.

Van rumbo a Miss Mundo 2009
