Shanna Moakler Mouths Off for Gay Marriage
Wed., Apr. 29, 2009 3:30 PM PDT by Marc Malkin
Adam Bouska Former Miss USA Shanna Moakler has been pretty vocal about what she thinks of Miss California Carrie Prejean's views on gay marriage.
But now, Moakler, who is executive director of the Miss California USA pageant, is showing how she feels by keeping her mouth shut.
Moakler, along with Miss USA 2006 first runner-up Tamiko Nash and last year's titleholder Raquel Beezley were in a photo studio last night being shot by Adam Bouska for NOH8, a campaign to support efforts to overturn Proposition 8...
The three women were shot together with duct tape over their mouths, a symbol of their voices not being heard, and "NOH8" painted on their cheeks.
The project was started by Bouska, 25, and his partner, Jeff Parshley, 28, in November after the passage of Prop 8 outlawed same-sex unions in the state.
"We never expected to have so many beauty queens participate. The whole campaign, obviously, is not a direct message to Miss California, but now she happened to have put herself in the line of fire," Bouska says about his newest pic of the Moakler et al.
"If Carrie is going to go out there with her message, then we have to go out there and make sure the voices of these girls are heard," he adds. "And that they are what Miss USA should stand for, too."
Another portrait shows 1997's Miss Universe Brook Lee, originally from Hawaii, wearing a white wedding dress and a sash that reads "Miss Equality." With or without duct tape, these beauties are sending the message.

The next Miss Botswana will be crowned this Saturday, at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) - and the organisers promise that it will be an event to remember with all the glitz and One of the Miss Botswana organisers, Bissau Gaobakwe, said that the countrywide scouting had been quite successful. The nationwide scouting produced 24 beauties, but only 14 finalists will compete for the ultimate Miss Botswana crown on Saturday. The finalists were selected by a public voting system and the fashion show held at Fashion Lounge recently. All in all the organisers seem quite happy with the build- up to the final.
The top 14 are: Portia Kahuma, Sumaiyah Marope, Precious Mangole, Tirelo Ramasedi, Naledi Willers, Emma Wareus, May Metzler, Tsholofelo Seabelo, Eunice Motsumi, Lorato Lenamile, Mpho Serumola, Tsaone Mogapi, Refilwe Gaebolae, and Norah Mphoeng.
Gaobakwe said since taking over Miss Botswana, they promise to turn the pageant professional and earn it the respect and recognition it deserves. He announced that they are succeeding because so far they have been able to sell 150 tickets in South Africa, "which shows that the pageant is attracting international interest". The night will not only be about beauty as there will be other acts, including music performances, and comedy. He revealed, that among those who will be performing on the night, will be South African comedian David Kau, who will also be the master of ceremonies (MC). He said through the event, they also want to celebrate Botswana, and as such they have invited a number of local celebrities, to take part in announcing certain acts, as well as present some of the prizes. The contestants are going to parade in locally designed garments and the designers will be acknowledged. He said they have been able to attract international celebrities among them Russell Simmons, who has agreed to donate prizes for the winners.
On a social responsibility level, Miss Botswana, in conjunction with Odirile "Vee" Sento, donated blankets and food to SOS children after the press conference. The contestants also tagged along, for the little ones to enjoy a personal moment with them prior to the event. He disclosed that the queen will walk away with a black P300, 000 C200 Kompressor Mercedes Benz. The queen will also have sponsorship for petrol from BP during her reign. She will also have allowances for her upkeep and one-year medical aid benefits.
The first princess, and second princesses will walk away with cash prizes. There will be consolation prizes for the others as well. Gaobakwe revealed that they have set aside money for grooming the young woman who will scoop the prize, in preparation for the Miss World pageant. He noted that in the five years that they have been contracted to organise Miss Botswana, it is their intention to bring the crown to Gaborone.
Botswana Council of Women (BCW), the Miss Botswana licence-holders, have contracted Leapfrog and 63 Entertainment. More information about Miss Botswana can be accessed through their website,www.missbotswana.net. The website gives more information on the contestants and the pageant.

A ex-miss desmente.

Miss India finalist in Kochi

KOCHI: What images flash across your mind when you think of the Scotland of India, Coorg? Besides its misty hills, lush green forests, orange groves, acres of tea and coffee plantation and breathtaking views, the hill station is now also famous as Miss India finalist Sonia Aiyapa’s hometown! Says a beaming Sonia who was in the city recently to walk the ramp at the Josco Fashion Mantra in Loungevity in The Avenue Regent, “Mine is a small community. No one from the Kodagu community has ever taken part in the Miss India contest. That was all the more reason for me to get encouragement and support from my family and friends.” The beauty goes gaga when asked to tell us more about her community. “Our women have a typical style of wearing a sari with the pleats coming behind. There were hardly any intercaste marriages but now things are changing.Pork is a must in every ceremony, be it birth, marriage or death!” Fo r Sonia who star ted modelling in her first year in college the contest came as a revelation after the Miss South India contest (“I made friends with Parvathy Omanakuttan here”) where she was adjudged Miss Photogenic.“The Miss India contest is an experience to cherish. Learning things like speaking gracefully to etiquette and walking the ramp, we had a great time at the grooming session in Juhu. We had the opportunity to mingle and hang around with many celebrities including Arjun Rampal, Dia Mirza and Aditi Govitrikar.” Ask her how life has changed after the contest and Sonia says, “Life is pretty much the same except that I have bigger brands coming to me now.” The model of Navaratna jewellery and Nalli silks had Kingfisher Airlines approaching her after her entry to the finals of Miss India. “I did try my hand in tinseltown and played a model in a Kannada film. But I find the pressure in the industry too much to handle,” says Sonia. She has also walked the ramp for Tarun Tahiliani, The model is all praise for Miss India World 2008 Parvathy Omankuttan, who went on to become the first runner up of Miss World 2008.“She’s cool! I met her the other day at Kozhikode at the inauguration of the Westlife showroom. We were together for more than a month at the grooming sessions of the Miss South India and Miss India contests. The best thing about her is that she imbibes the positive points from people she comes across.” Sonia is into a CD business apart from her modelling assignments.“I’m not a 9-to-5 kinda person. So a friend and I joined hands to make corporate training CDs,” says Sonia, who graduated in travel and tourism from Jyothi Nivas college (“There are many Malayalis there. So I know bits and pieces of your language!”) Sonia has a number of plans up her sleeve. “I want to do a diploma course in food and wine management from Australia.Kodagu women make wine at home.I want to help them market and sell it profitably.” Sonia is grateful for the support her family has offered in her career.“My brother works in Dubai. He came down to see me at the Miss India contest. But I’m yet to confirm if he came to see me or check out the other girls!” she says flashing a lovely smile. “Mom is my biggest critic. She often ends up rating herself higher than me and says she would have carried it better than I did.” Is Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Fashion’ a true portrayal of the glamour and grime of the modelling industry? “The film showed only a few aspects of the industry. There’s more to it.” A pause later, Sonia says, “We need to be street smart, look sweet and extract payments without looking bad or sounding harsh.” This is the second time that Sonia is in Kochi to walk the ramp for designer Rajesh Shetty. “But I’m yet to explore the city. I hope I can go sight seeing and take in the beauty of God’s Own Country at least this time.”parvathynayar@gmail.com

Important issue lost in Miss USA 'controversy'
It's a story with no heroes, no villains and no consequence. At a beauty pageant that nobody watches (the Miss USA beauty competition), a notoriously vile blogger (Perez Hilton) asked a controversial question ("Should every state legalize gay marriage?") to a barely articulate contestant (Carrie Prejean, also known as Miss California USA).
Images
Prejean's answer was garbled and inaccurate: "I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other ... choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage ... (but) I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman." OK. We strongly disagree with her position, but it wasn't gay-bashing. So why does the story persist, day after day?
Part of the reason it's persisting is that both Prejean and Hilton want it to - as a result of all the attention, they're both making out like bandits. Hilton, who's been attacking Prejean on his blog with epithets, makes pennies on every page view. Prejean has become an evangelical darling - and once she hits the speech-and-appearance circuit, she'll make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. (Some of which she should use to employ a good speechwriter.) As for their sponsor - the Miss USA pageant - it's never been more relevant.
It's win-win-win for the blogger, the beauty queen and the pageant promoters - and a distraction for an issue that deserves more serious and substantive discussion than it merited in this vacuous exchange.

lounge at Iloilo airport.
I was very fortunate to meet a Brazilian beauty, Priscilla Meirelles, Miss Earth 2004, at the Iloilo City Visitors Bureau (ICVB) Lounge of the Iloilo airport.
She was wearing a white tank top and a gray jacket. Even without makeup, she's beautiful.
From our conversation, I have learned that after winning the Miss Earth title, several opportunities opened for her. She became a cover girl for magazines, had several hosting jobs and a modeling career.
She was born in Manaus, Brazil on Sept. 5, 1983. She has a stunning figure, with 35-24-35 inches to boast of. Then, there's the towering height of five feet and 10 inches.
She became the first Brazilian to win the Miss Earth title. She also won the Best in National Costume award on the said pageant.
She said that competing against other beautiful ladies from around the world was not easy.

The writer with Priscilla Meirelles.
Before joining the pageant, she was a medical student. “When I was a young girl, I always had high grades in school. I have a very adventurous spirit, a very free mind and very friendly, like Filipinos. I love to try new things. I also love to travel,” she said.
Being a beauty queen, a model and a television personality, she wants to look fit and beautiful always. Thus, she goes to the gym and eats a balanced diet.
She was among the judges during the Miss Manggahan pageant held in Guimaras recently. Every year, the organizer brings a beauty queen to the province, among them, Priscilla and Gloria Diaz.
She said that she's never heard of Guimaras before. Thus, when she was invited to be one of the judges in the contest, she said yes and was really excited.
“Many people told me that it’s a beautiful place. Something like Boracay. My expectation is very high because the Philippines has many beautiful islands,” the 25-year-old beauty added.
She considers the Philippines as her extension country. She sees that Filipinos have a positive disposition and always smile. “The Filipinos welcome you no matter who you are, what color you are and were you came from. They make you comfortable,” she said.
She wants to be fluent in Tagalog. “I learned a few but not enough. I want to develop a career in this country.”

On my end, the preparations have begun. But the focus now is totally on Ekta, as she has just two months left for the Miss Universe pageant. As for me, I’m working on my shoots and completing all commitments. After I won the Miss India crown, I binged so much, that now I’m back to the gym with a vengeance. Since the pageant will be held in South Africa, I’m reading up on the country and trying to keep myself abreast with all the happenings in the world.
A number of Indian beauties have worn the Miss World crown. Do you feel pressurised in anyway?
As they say, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. I’m inspired by the success stories of our past winners. When I entered Miss India, I wanted to win for my mother, who has been through a lot in life. I wanted to win for myself. Now that I have to compete at Miss World, I want to win it for India. And I’m sure people will pray for me.
The Miss USA pageant was rocked by controversy, when Miss California spoke against gay
marriages...
I feel sorry for Carrie Prejean (Miss California). She spoke her heart without keeping in mind the larger picture. You cannot hurt the sentiments of a certain section of society when you are expected to represent them on the world stage. Everyone has the right to make a choice and we should respect that. If she really had to speak her mind, she should have put it in a more subtle way, without hurting anyone.
Is it important to be politically correct?
When you are given the responsibility of representing an entire nation, you should be careful not to hurt people. I have totally understood the seriousness of representing a country like India. Whatever I do or say will not just affect me, but the entire nation. So, I have to be extra careful.
Miss Australia too is creating a controversy after being criticised for being too skinny. People say models encourage young girls to go on diets and be unhealthy.
Everybody has a mind of his/her own. I think it’s up to an individual to decide what’s good or bad and not be influenced by others. Thankfully, I’m genetically blessed and don’t put on weight.
Any Bollywood dreams?
The pageant will decide my fate. I’m like a horse with blinkers. I set small -term goals for myself and take things one at a time. Right now, my focus is on the pageant. After that, I’ll decide what to do.

Katie Taylor wins Miss Universe New Zealand 2009
Wellington, April 27 (Aucklander Katie Taylor, 22, sponsored by Southern First National of Manurewa, won Miss Universe New Zealand 2009 at the Levin Events’ Centre on Saturday.
Miss Taylor is a construction project manager and a qualified pilot.
She begins work today back in Auckland, replacing her ball gown and tiara with a reflective jacket and hard hat, in the lead-up to Miss Universe 2009 on August 23 at Paradise Island, the Bahamas.
This was her second attempt at the national title, having placed in the top five in 2007.
She says, ‘I have never won anything before, but I gave it everything I had.
‘I’m looking forward to working on getting ready for the finals in the Bahamas, and to doing my country proud.’
Crowd favourite, 18-year-old Priyani Puketapu, Miss Horowhenua, was judged first runner-up. Anthea Stembridge, 19, sponsored by Ultimate Transport Solutions, was second runner-up.
Miss Universe New Zealand pageant director Val Lott says she is ‘delighted’ by the judges’ choices for the top three places.
The judges were impressed by Miss Taylor’s natural conversation in her interview, which was held privately at the Horowhenua District Council Buildings on April 24.
She also wowed the panel of five judges with her performance on the night, in particular in the eveningwear segment.

Pageant judge Jack Yan, publisher of Lucire and the chairman of the international jury for Miss Sweden, says the 2009 pageant was the toughest he had seen in his three years with Miss Universe New Zealand.
‘The winners were separated by the slimmest of margins. When we walked back into the hall, we had no idea how the top five would be ordered,’ he says.
Miss Manawatu, Samantha Elvy—another crowd favourite—and Miss Taupo, Cathrine Mitchell, rounded off the top five.
The judging panel was led by Di Goldsworthy of the Newmarket Business Association, and included Horowhenua District Mayor Brendan Duffy, make-up artist and agency placement manager for Talent Scouts Ltd. Evana Patterson, and former Miss Horowhenua and businesswoman Suzanne Cottle.
Ms Lott says that she was thrilled at the welcome the pageant received in Levin, rather than its traditional home in Auckland, complimenting mayor Brendan Duffy and the Council for their welcome.
The Abba Touring Group, led by Aaron Keown, performed live at the Events’ Centre.
An informal after-party for Miss Taylor and the other contestants was held at the Retro Bar in Paraparaumu.

Miss Calif. gets heroine's welcome at SD church
By LISA LEFF – 6 hours ago
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Miss California Carrie Prejean, who became the bombshell of the Miss USA pageant by saying gay couples should not be allowed to marry, said Sunday that her state sponsors urged her to apologize afterward but she rejected the advice.
Prejean, 21, said officials from the Miss California USA pageant were worried that her comments would cost their contest financial backing and tried to prepare her for a string of post-pageant media interviews by discouraging her from discussing her religious beliefs.
"`You need to apologize to the gay community. You need to not talk about your faith. This has everything to do with you representing California and saving the brand,'" Prejean recalled being told. "I was representing California. I was representing the majority of people in California."
She offered her version of the tense hours following the April 19 Miss USA pageant while appearing at the San Diego megachurch that has helped shape her views. The Rock Church, founded by former San Diego Chargers defensive back Miles McPherson, was active in the campaign to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriages in California last year.
Prejean, who was named first runner-up to Miss North Carolina and will remain Miss California until November, has spent the last week defending her comments, made during the pageant's final round. They came in response to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's question about legalizing same-sex marriage.
"I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage," she said. "And you know what? I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."
Hilton, who is gay, stoked the 30-second exchange the next day when he cursed the beauty queen on his blog and suggested her response may have cost Prejean the Miss USA crown.
Officials from K2 Productions, which produces the Miss California USA pageant, did not immediately return a phone call Sunday from The Associated Press seeking to verify Prejean's account.
The San Diego Christian College junior, model and member of the San Diego Padres "Pad Squad" received a heroine's welcome from fellow members of the Rock, where she was the guest of honor at morning services. Seated onstage across from McPherson, she recalled resisting multiple opportunities — from her appearance on NBC's "Today" show to a performance with Miss USA pageant owner Donald Trump — to edit, explain or expound upon her remarks.
"I knew I had to stay true to my beliefs and not let them intimidate me into taking back what I said because I don't take back what I said," she said.
Rashad Robinson, media programs director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said Prejean's honesty would have been admirable if, in frankly expressing her opinion, she hadn't misspoke.
"Contrary to Miss California's claim, people can't choose, gay and lesbian couples don't have a choice except in a handful of states," Robinson said. "In her extensive public platform since then, she hasn't clarified that, she hasn't walked back from what are clearly misstatements."
Because the contestant's scores are supposed to be kept secret, it may never be known whether Prejean would have won had she not drawn Hilton's question. Trump has said one part of the pageant would not have decided the outcome. Other pageant veterans, however, say that based on her standing as first runner-up, low scores from one judge would have been enough to cost Prejean the title.
Besides Hilton, at least two more of the pageant's dozen judges have said Prejean should have given a more politic, if not politically correct, answer to avoid offending anyone and that it was her lack of tact, not her opposition to same-sex marriage, that ruffled feathers.
"I do not fault her for her beliefs. I fault her for her complete lack of social grace, and that's a quality I want my Miss USA to possess," judge Alicia Jacobs, a former Miss Nevada, wrote on her blog.
Others, though, have applauded Prejean for her forthrightness. The other four finalists were asked whether they would speak out against domestic violence, favor using taxpayer money to bail out corporations, give immigrants access to health care and help fund elections in Afghanistan.
"A question like that is not relevant in a platform such as the Miss USA pageant. It's far too political and it's divisive as well," said Kenya Moore, the 1993 Miss USA who was one of the judges that named Prejean Miss California in November. "Half of the audience is going to agree and half is not, no matter what she said. It's a no-win situation."
As for Prejean, there is still the possibility she could go on to become Miss USA if winner Kristen Dalton wins the Miss Universe pageant this summer. Meanwhile, she plans to continue making the public appearances that comes with her Miss California USA duties.
On Thursday, she received a standing ovation while presenting an award at the Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards in Nashville, but said, "up in Hollywood, I'm not sure what their reaction would be to my showing up at a movie premiere."
She said she would be willing to meet with representatives from California's largest gay rights group "as long as it's not political."
If anything, Prejean has solidified her stance in the last week. McPherson, who preaches against homosexuality, has been acting as her adviser and encouraging her to use her newfound fame to persuade other evangelical Christians to share their views, even if they are unpopular.
"I learned that God has a bigger crown than any man can give you," she said.

Miss Universe GB looks to Wales for another winner
THESE seven stunning girls from Wales have got through to the prestigious finals of Miss Universe GB.
They’ll be among 40 hopefuls vying for the coveted title at the final a week today.
Last year’s crown went to Swansea girl Lisa Lazarus – catapulting her into a glamorous lifestyle of jet-setting across the world and filming in Bollywood.
The finalists of 2009 will take to the stage in three hotly contested catwalk rounds at The ICC in Birmingham in front of a celebrity judging panel, which includes dynamic DIY TV presenter Nick Knowles.
The winner will go on to compete at the international Miss Universe competition – owned and run by American tycoon Donald Trump – which will take place in the Bahamas this August.
They’ve spent the past four months preparing for the big day and fundraising for the competition’s official charity, the Cardiff-based Joshua Foundation, which helps children with cancer.
Finalist Lydia Yhnell, 25, from Newport, will be cheered on by her 12 siblings. She says coming from a large family helps fuel her confidence.
Not that she needs much help. Lydia, who won the Miss Smile section of Miss Wales 2008, was junior Wales Boxing Champion in 2001, has represented Wales at judo and is a black belt in karate.
She also back-packed around the world for two years and now works as an examinations assistant at Coleg Gwent’s Cross Keys campus,
“I like a challenge and I’m looking forward to the final,” Lydia told Wales on Sunday.
“I’ve not boxed for a couple of years but I started again for the competition. It’s a good way to keep fit and good self defence. I think it’s important to do things and try things. That’s what life’s all about.
“Being one of 13 puts you in a different category. It’s great coming from a big family.”
Wales’ finalists also include two crime students.
Jade Blackmore, 22, is in her final year of a criminology and sociology degree at Uwic in Cardiff and Lauren Howells, 21, from Caerphilly is in her second year of the same subject at Cardiff University. When not swatting up on what makes villains tick they like to ensure they look their best.
Jade, a finalist in Miss GB 2006, lives in Pengam Green, Cardiff, and went to Stanwell School, Penarth.
She said: “I’d like to win Miss Universe GB and in future to specialise in helping young people from deprived backgrounds and help them to fulfil their ambitions and aspirations.”
Fellow finalist and criminology student Lauren Howells, wants to join the police and become a criminal psychologist, as well as winning Miss Universe GB.
“I’m really excited and a bit nervous. I like being on stage. I get an adrenalin rush from it,” she said.
“It’s been really fun so far.
“I was in the finals of Miss Wales last year and I loved it.”
The former Kings Monkton School pupil doesn’t drink but sells shots at Club Metro, Cardiff, to help fund her degree.
Despite this being her first beauty contest Alize Mounter, 20, from Beddau, Pontypridd, has a lifetime’s modelling experience.
Alize, who is studying beauty therapy, had her portfolio done as a baby, modelled baby clothes in catalogues and for Marks and Spencer as a teenager.
An impressive, 5ft 10in tall, she said: “I’ve just bought my dress for the final. It cost my mum £1,000. It’s ivory silk. It’s lovely.
“I’m really excited, but this is my first ever beauty contest and I am nervous.”
At 18, finalist Ayesha Perry-Iqbal is still at school.
She’s doing A-level art, drama and RE at the town’s independent Rougemont School and wants a career in performing arts. At 5ft 5in and size 10 to 12 she hopes she’ll show people that you don’t have to be “skinny” to be pretty.
“I’m really pleased to get to the finals,” she said.
“It’s my first beauty contest. I’m a normal girl and want other normal girls to know curves are normal.”
Rebecca Beynon, 19, from Swansea, hopes Miss Universe GB will help launch her modelling career.
It’s the first time the Coleg Sir Gar beauty therapy student has entered a beauty contest and she’s “excited and nervous”.
Catrin Davies, 21, is the only finalist from North Wales.
Catrin, who lives in Conwy Valley and works at Clinton James hairdresser in Llandudno Junction, couldn’t believe it when she got to the finals.
“I was at work when I heard and just jumped up and down,” she said.
All seven will have to impress the judges – including former beauty queen Amy Guy, who plays Siren on Sky One’s Gladiators, fellow Gladiator Predator, Big Brother 9 winner Rachel Rice, Bollywood actor and model Zia Choudhary and Jason Hayward from Saks hair and beauty – next Sunday to win.
They’ll have the support of friends and family in the audience, plus Lisa Lazarus will jet back in to accompany Callum Best. Also at the catwalk side will be twins Sam and Amanda from Big Brother 8 and I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here’s David Van Day, of pop duo Dollar.
All seven will be on the catwalk in front of judges Knowles, former beauty queen Amy Guy who now plays Siren on Sky One’s Gladiators, fellow Gladiator Predator, Big Brother 9 winner Rachel Rice, TV presenter and WAG Lizzie Cundy, The Sun newspaper beauty editor Sue Moxley, Birmingham’s BRMB radio DJ Tim Lichfield, Zia Choudhary, Bollywood actor and model and Jason Hayward from Saks hair and beauty.

The contest is run in Great Britain by Cardiff company Vibe PR and Marketing, which also runs Vibe Models.

No pretendo morirme aquí”, manifiesta vía telefónica.

Honoring Nazanin: an Angel of Iran
Former Miss Canada Nazanin Afshin-Jam, here at the Miss World 2003 contest, lobbied on behalf of a teenage Iranian girl who had been sentenced to death. |
| By: Amil Imani Never mind the mythical angels of religion and poetry. Meet a living angel in flesh, Nazanin Afshin-Jam. Many of you may not know that we have a hero in our midst. Many of you may not know that this individual, singlehandedly, has done more for her compatriots, as well as for other people of our planet, than most of us together. This dazzling beauty, both inside and outside, has dedicated her life to the good of humanity. We are honoring Nazanin Afshin-Jam for her tireless efforts to shed light into the shadowy corners of conflict, to expose and end the abuses that ruin the lives of so many children in Iran. Her work exemplifies the ideals of the human rights movement: "courage, an unswerving commitment to justice and a genuine concern for the rights of all victims." Unquestionably, this young talented Iranian born Canadian citizen has been a role model and has earned our respect, not only among most Iranians around the world, but in many other countries where she has visited and spoken about Human rights issues. Nazanin Afshin-Jam, this dazzling gem of Iran, has a huge mission in life. As good a human being as she is and almost unnervingly nice, she is relentlessly positive, a one-person cheering section of smiles. She has elevated what it means to be an Iranian and what it means to be a child of Cyrus the Great. Nazanin is an international human rights activist, singer/songwriter, actor, model and former Miss World Canada. After being crowned "Miss Canada." Nazanin went on to become the First Runner-Up for "Miss World 2003." She was runner-up to Miss Ireland, Rosanna Davison. She is also co-founder of the "Stop Child Executions" organization whose aim it is to try and put a permanent end to executions of minors in Iran and abroad who are currently on death row. She has produced short documentaries, connected lawyers working pro-bono to children on death row who do not have access to proper attorneys. She is constantly informing the UN, individual governments and NGOs including Amnesty International on urgent cases of children facing execution. "Prosperity and progress can only flourish when our human rights are a priority, where democracy and freedom of choice take precedence," says Nazanin Nazanin learned at an early age of the threat people face when their human rights are ignored and abused. This Persian star was born in Tehran in 1979 at the height of the so called Islamic revolution and a year later her family was forced to flee after her non-political father was arrested and tortured at the hands of the fundamentalists. Growing up in Canada after escaping an uncertain future in Iran, Nazanin knew not to take her freedom and good fortune for granted. Her conscience would not allow her to forget those who live in fear every day, in any country where people's basic human rights are violated. Nazanin is also a pilot and is licensed to fly both powered aircraft and gliders and is a Squadron Commander Royal Canadian Air Cadets, holding the rank of Warrant Officer 1st class. She is fluent in three languages: Persian, English, French and also conversational Spanish. However, her true passion is human rights. Nazanin was instrumental in saving another Nazanin (Nazanin Fatehi) in Iran. Nazanin Fatehi was sentenced to hang for defending herself and her 15-year-old niece by stabbing one of three men who tried to rape her and her niece in Karaj in March 2005. In the lawless jungle of the Islamic Republic, they rushed to condemn her to death rather than the assailants or the rapists. She initiated a yearlong campaign to save the life of a 17-year-old girl in Iran who faced execution by hanging for having stabbed one of three men who attempted to rape her. The Save Nazanin petition collected 350, 000 signatures worldwide. She went on tours around the globe, speaking in Stockholm, Brussels, Gothenburg and Frankfurt regarding Fatehi. She organized the creation of a documentary to raise awareness on Fatehi's plight and created a website http://www.helpnazanin.com/ informing the public with news and of how to help. She helped raise the required $43,000 bail to release Nazanin Fatehi from prison She spoke around the world, brought much needed attention in the United Nations and finally her arduous task bears fruit. After more than two years in jail, Nazanin Fatehi was eventually released on bail on January 31, 2007. That was a joyous moment for her and an astonishing victory for all people. Nazanin Afshin-Jam's efforts led her to create the "stop child executions" organization. "Some people give up in pursuing their goal when they have almost reached their destiny while others, on the contrary, vigorously go after the victory by hook or by crook. I will never forget that moment when she was released from prison," says Nazanin. Nazanin continues to address human rights abuses worldwide, in China, Burma, Darfur and other countries with tyrannical regimes and particular in relation to women and children in Iran and the Middle East. She has given speeches at the UN, EU, UK, Canadian Parliament, numerous universities and conferences with media features on CNN, BBC, CBC, FOX, Al Jazeera TV, Persian Voice of America and print stories in Glamour, Seventeen, Chatelaine, Flare, Vanity Fair magazine and newspapers worldwide. She has received the Global Citizenship Award from the President of the University of British Columbia and the Alumni Association. She also received a "Hero Award for Human Rights" on Friday August 25, 2007 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the case of Nazanin Fatehi. She appeared as a guest speaker at an Amnesty International conference in Berlin a couple of years ago regarding the executions of minors in Iran. She was the guest of Honor and speaker for OnCor ‘s 10-day charity fund-raising event benefiting the Dangriga HIV/Aids Society (Belize). Nazanin's battle against child executions continues with the goal of halting the practice in Iran and in the handful of other countries where it still continues. Regarding "child execution" organization, she can use any help from any one who is concerned about the execution of children and minors. Thus far, she has managed to save many human lives. On September 11, 2008, Nazanin sent out a press release stating, "The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will have to get past the Ahmadinejad Wall of Shame, a visual display and demonstration across the United Nations Headquarters- before entering the opening of the "General Assembly." "While the UN legitimizes Ahmadinejad as the leader of Iran by having the door open to him at the General Assembly, the Iranian people feel betrayed by the false representation. In the face of the West's obsession with Iran's nuclear development, the voices of the Iranian people have been stifled and human rights abuses have been overshadowed. This Wall of Shame demonstration is hoping to give a voice to the voiceless and address the concerns of the vast majority of Iranian people who believe in a united, secular, democratic Iran based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and no military intervention on Iran," said Nazanin. Nazanin is a person of conscience and integrity. Her tireless passion for saving human lives is a guide to all of us who aspire to better the world around us by our commitment to truth. Her professionalism and manners combined with her enormous humanity and cheerful eyes, on the camera and off the camera, are impeccable. She is the true daughter of Persia and represents all decent Iranian women. "Life is precious. Life has ebbs and flows. Some days the sun is shining, the birds are chirping and you feel like you are on top of the world. Other days, you feel like you are being dragged into a black hole and don't know if you will ever find your way out of the vortex. Thankfully, my faith is strong and I know we are never given more than we can handle," says Nazanin. "Life's experiences have taught me that everything happens for a reason and thankfully, we as human beings are resilient. Not only does the sky crack open with sunshine after a thunderstorm, but often a rainbow graces the skies as well. It is often after the most challenging moments in our lives that we grow stronger and reach a higher level of consciousness, either at the personal level or at the universal level," says Nazanin. As Nazanin is contemplating the new life upon which she has entered, she thinks of the past and how those dark roads she traveled have given her the strength needed to do more. She is on a mission to break all the boundaries. Our Human Rights Activist is very passionate, extremely optimistic, honest, and believes in what she says and does. "The past is the past. I'm only interested in looking into a brighter future," she says. "I believe in the pursuit of peace, love, and a spiritual understanding of divinity which, in the end, will allow us to truly feel happy and in harmony. Once you have experienced true happiness, it is only natural to want to share that feeling with others so that they may feel the same. Our only responsibility on this earth is to extend all the love in our hearts to those around us. We are all human. Every single human and animal life is precious and has meaning and we must do everything in our capacity to preserve it." Many people have been inspired by Nazanin's determination. Her work sends a powerful message that governments and armed groups should end their barbaric abuses and respect the rights of all human beings and especially the children. "The Islamic Republic in Iran has long been no respecter of human rights, judging from their track records. For example, look at what is happening to members of the Baha'i faith in Iran. Just a few weeks ago the Islamic government publicly announced that if Baha'is are caught gathering together for the purpose of sharing their faith, they will be arrested. They have publicly called for the eradication of Baha'is in Iran. What do we call that? Isn't that genocide?" she says. Nazanin left us with a beautiful quote: "The physical beauty of youth will someday fade. But, the beauty of the spirit within, when nurtured, can grow forever." http://www.rightsidenews.com/ |
Miss São Paulo desfila pelas ruas de Campinas

Carlos Basaan/AAN

Miss World Australia in the pink for fun run
Last weekend, the Albion Park beauty hosted a charity fun run in her home town, which raised $2000 for the Ronald McDonald House scheme. Now she is lending her face and energy to the 2009 Mother's Day Family Fun 'n' Run/Walk, in which all proceeds go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Ms Richardson said fun runs were an easy and enjoyable way to raise money for good causes. "It is quite hard to organise but you can raise a bit of money in a short amount of time," she said. "But I think the main point about it is you are raising money in a fun and fit environment that is welcoming to families. Everyone can come along." The Mother's Day Fun 'n' Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, May 10 and was launched yesterday in Crown St Mall. The event features 5km and 2km options, with the track located between North Wollongong and Fairy Meadow surf clubs. Ms Richardson said she had personal reasons for wanting to help out with the event. "My grandmother had breast cancer twice and my other nan's sister had it so it is very much in my family," she said. "I think it's just about realising it has affected me and people I love." Early-bird entry fees cost $15/$8 or $40 for a family. Entry on the day costs $20/$10/$50. To register online visit www.mothersdayclassic.org or call 0412 009 691. http://www.illawarramercury.com.au/
Former Miss USA Tara Conner Ready to Be Next Country Music Star

© Public Domain/Wikimedia Commons
In light of the ongoing war of words between Miss California Carrie Prejean and Perez Hilton over her answer to Hilton's question about same-sex marriage at the 2009 Miss USA Pageant, the media is going back over old pageant scandals for story ideas. One of the more recent pageant scandals was that of 2006 Miss USA Tara Conner, who nearly lost her crown when unflattering pictures surfaced of her abusing drugs and alcohol. Pageant owner Donald Trump stepped in and suggested a rehab program so that Tara Conner could keep her crown. Three years later and Conner is ready to take on a career in country music.
Although she is best known for her near loss of crown, Tara Conner has managed to move on. She completed her rehab program, kept her crown and title, finished fourth runner-up in the Miss Universe Pageant, and moved on. Since then she has appeared on the MTV reality television program, "The Girls of Hedsor Hall," which took 12 young ladies whose lives were falling apart and attempted to transform them into lovely women.
Tara Conner was offered $1 million to do a spread for Playboy right after the rehab experience, but she turned the men's magazine down. She told Fox News, "I have no regrets at all. Many people see "Playboy" as beautiful art but my art is my music."
And country music has become her passion. The 23-year-old former beauty queen could say that she gets it honest, hailing from Kentucky. Her family, she says, was very music-oriented, singing and playing various instruments, but all she could do was sing. She announced on her MySpace web page that she has been working hard on material for a country album for the past four months, with plans of launching a country musicsinging career soon. She said she had never felt confident in her singing to reach for her goals but that after appearing on the third season of CMT's "Gone Country," she "had never been put in the position to write...and when i did i knew thats [sic] where i belonged!!!"

Campinas

Donald Trump Defends Miss California, Calls Gay-Marriage Question "a Bit Unlucky"
Today 1:09 PM PDT by Breanne L. Heldman
AP Photo/Jae C. Hong, Denise Truscello/Getty Images If the whole pageant thing doesn't work out, sounds like Miss California might be up for an Apprenticeship.
Donald Trump, the owner of the Miss Universe franchise, finally has lifted his silence about Carrie Prejean's oppositional answer to the question of gay marriage, which she claims cost her the Miss USA title.
He disagrees with that theory.
"Miss California has done a wonderful job, that was her belief," Trump told Fox News. "It wasn't a bad answer, that was simply her belief."
He also sympathizes with the much-maligned tiara-wearer, saying she was "a bit unlucky" to get the tricky question in the first place and that no matter how she answered, "she was going to get killed."
Prejean herself has defended her response, standing by her statements that "marriage should be between a man and a woman."
The actual pageant winner, Miss North Carolina, Kristen Dalton, has expressed her feelings that the question was fair game, while former Miss USA Shanna Moakler has supported Miss California, but not necessarily agreeing with the stance.
Additionally, numerous celebrities have twittered their Prejean backlash.
At least all this beauty buzz is diverting our focus from the Octomom.

No role model: Miss Universe pageant attacked over 'malnourished' beauty queen

Unfortunately for Stephanie Naumoska, and to the consternation of health experts, it was for all the wrong reasons.
Critics said the 19-year-old was just skin and bone. With her 31-25-35 measurements she seemed to have trouble filling her already skimpy bikini as she paraded before the judges at the Australian finals of the pageant in Sydney.
Stephanie Naumoska in the Australia finals of the Miss Universe contest: Her ribs and hip bones are clearly visible
The model (centre) poses with other contestants
She was tall enough - at 5ft 10in - to be the perfect height for a model but what has alarmed health experts is her weight.
She weighs only 7st 7lb and has a Body Mass Index of 15.1 - and that, by World Health Organisation standards, means she is malnourished.
Her BMI should be between 18.5 and 24.9 to fall into the 'average' category.
When the pageant organisers were asked why they had allowed Miss Naumoska to parade before the cameras when her ribs and pelvic bones could be seen protruding alarmingly, an official reply was that her look was all to do with her heritage.
'She's Macedonian,' said one official.
But a spectator at the event at the Hilton Hotel commented: 'Side on, if you didn't look carefully enough, you could miss her - she was that thin.'
Dieticians urged the Sydney model to seek urgent medical attention because she was dangerously underweight.
Healthy? Miss Naumoska, seen here in a photoshoot, claims she eats well and is not unhealthy
Health expert Melanie McGrice said she was well under the World Health Organisation benchmark for malnutrition and added: 'I would certainly want to be doing an assessment of her diet to make sure she doesn't have some type of eating disorder.'
She said Miss Naumoska needed urgent blood tests, diet analysis and a general body assessment.
Even Australian politicians have joined in the debate.
Carmel Tebutt, the acting premier of New South Wales, said that allowing her to enter the contest when she looked so disturbingly thin sent the wrong message to young women who looked up to glamorous models.
'The main thing is to encourage girls and young women to put health before thinking about trying to fit into a particular type of body image,' she said.
The Australian Medical Association called on pageant organisers to impose a minimum Body Mass Index of 20.
In this swimwear shoot, the model appears less bony and a healthier weight
But officials said too much emphasis was being placed on Miss Naumoska's lifestyle rather than her ethnic background.
Deborah Miller, director of the contest, said the model blamed her Macedonian heritage for her thin appearance.
'The women do have long, lithe bodies and small bones,' she said. 'It's their body type, just as Asian girls tend to be rather small.
'She doesn't have an eating disorder or anything like that. There's nothing wrong with her.'
But nutritionist Susie Burrell said: 'Macedonian body? I've not seen anything like that anywhere to support that.
'What I see in the photos is muscle wastage on the upper arm and legs.'
Miss Naumoska was beaten in the final by 21-year-old TV presenter and model Rachel Finch, who at 5ft 9in and measuring 34-24-34 appeared to have just a little more flesh than her skinny rival.

Miss Universe New Zealand

Elderly shoppers were agog as 15 glamorous Miss Universe New Zealand contestants sashayed through Coastlands shopping mall ahead of this weekend's glitzy final in Levin.
Fans were a bit disgruntled by the time the girls, adorned in white satin sashes, swept through automatic doors into the brightly lit mall two hours late.
"I do not know how they are going to achieve world peace if they cannot even find Coastlands," said a man leaning wearily on a counter.
Organisers this year swapped Auckland's big-city bright lights for the provincial charm of heartland Levin for tomorrow's final.
Sipping coffee in the food hall, Ian Crosland looked stunned when the girls swept past.
"They are bloody wonderful. I wish I was a lot younger but I would get myself into trouble."
Asked why she had entered the pageant, Miss Putaruru, Kate Hockly, said it provided a challenge for young women. "We get to express ourselves in multifaceted ways."
Miss Paraparaumu, Amanda Gatfield, said it was "confident building", while at 26, Miss Horowhenua, Janet Pudney, said her age meant it was her last chance to promote herself by entering.
Miss Taupo, Catherine Mitchell, said: "I think everyone should be happy, comfortable in their own skin and share that happiness with other people, giving from a meaningful place."
The girls will be selling poppies for the RSA today and will attend an Anzac Day service tomorrow before kicking off the final by dancing to Abba's Waterloo.

After graduation, Ksenia went to Tyumen Oil and Gas University. She became a fashion model and was soon Miss Tyumen, which did not go unnoticed.Point, a top modeling agency, offered her work.
Last year, Ksenia worked in Milan at High Fashion Week. She then turned down a runway show in Prague in order to take part in the 2007 Miss Russia contest. She made the right choice.
Today, Ksenia is continuing her university studies, although combining them with modelling work isn’t easy. The same goes for her private life – Ksenia says she has yet to meet the man of her dreams.

Miss Earth urges government to lead fight to save planet

KARLA PAULA HENRY of the Philippines, 2008 Miss Earth, suggested that the government take the lead in helping preserve the environment before it is too late.
And, the first Filipina to wear the Miss Earth crown said in a speech before a meeting of the Rotary Club of Makati-North on Wednesday, Earth Day, the country’s leaders cannot possibly succeed without Filipinos themselves pitching in.
“To save the Earth is the No. 1 thing we have to do,” Henry told The Manila Times during an interview at the sidelines of the Rotary meeting.
Politicians who basically make up the government, she noted, could still catch the bus out to meet head-on global warming and other climate changes.
They could use as a jumping board for that purpose the 2010 elections, where, Henry said,
she expects to see possible candidates raising the environment as part of their platform of government.
According to the beauty queen, she has “not heard of a politician who considers the conservation of the environment as an important issue” as he or she probably would those on economic and social reforms.
In the 2010 elections, Henry said she hopes to also see “a presidential candidate who would balance out the environmental and economic concerns of the people.” These elections would pick President Gloria Arroyo’s successor.
She pointed to climate change as one of the top challenges for the Filipinos whom she said are apparently made to believe that global warming, for one, is just a buzz word among environmentalists.
Authorities “say the Filipinos are not experiencing it (global warming) but we are. We are losing some of our islands because of climate change,” the 22-year-old Filipino-Canadian said.
Henry warned that it is “too late” to stop global warming but that people around the world still can delay it.
Unfortunately, though, she feared that its worst impacts on Planet Earth “will eventually happen.” Apparently showing that she is walking the talk, the 2008 Miss Earth from Cebu in central Philippines, said that she herself tries to help save the environment by minimizing the use of plastic materials, conserving energy and going for “green” technology.
The government and the politicians failing to do their part in the battle to protect the environment, Henry said, would also see the country’s resources running out to the point that the people would have to buy the air if they wanted to breathe and the water if they wanted to drink.
They are considered partners by Miss Earth Foundation that organizers of the Miss Earth beauty pageant had put up to help promote environmental awareness through formal and non-formal education around the world.
Henry also cited the involvement of local-government units in the foundation’s projects in a number of provinces in the country.
That cooperation, she said, shows that “beauty queens do go out, talk to people and share the message that the environment cannot anymore be ignored.”
Henry may have found an ally in the Manila city government that on Earth Day vowed to support environmental conservation and protection efforts.
“As we celebrate the 39th Earth Day, Manila joins the world in recognizing this special day to look at not only our country but our planet and see what needs improving or changing,” Mayor Alfredo Lim said.
Lim, along with Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and Petron Corp. president Eric Recto, planted a mahogany sapling to symbolize his support for environmental conservation at the Pandacan Linear Park.
“We must safeguard and protect our environment, establish, sustain and conserve our natural resources to benefit not only ourselves and our families but the whole world. We will not only preserve our planet but also all the people and creatures living in it,” the mayor said.
He stressed the significance of planting trees and maintaining parks in the city as part of promoting consciousness on the importance of protecting nature and conserving the environment.
The mayor gave full support to the Earth Day program organized by the Ministry on Ecology of the Archdiocese of Manila under Cardinal Rosales at the Sto. Niño de Pandacan parish church in Pandacan.
“We are focusing on community action and renewal, and this is a great opportunity to show that we can do anything by voluntarily taking direct action on in our own communities,” Lim said.
The Sagip Pasig River Movement marked Earth Day with a fluvial parade at Escolta Ferry Terminal also in Manila.
Ben Galindo, the chairman of the movement, said that many laws on protecting the environment, including Pasig and other rivers, have been enacted but many are not followed or not implemented.
Among the supposedly useless laws are the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004, the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Waste Control Act and the Pollution Control Law.

Angie Harmon Defends Miss California
Republican actress Angie Harmon is standing up for Miss California Carrie Prejean, who has been criticized for saying on Sunday's Miss USA pageant that she does not support gay marriage.
"If someone is standing up for how they feel and talking about their beliefs, why are we punishing her for that?" Harmon, 36, told Usmagazine.com Tuesday at the opening of the Malibu Lumber Yard in Calif. "I just don't understand how we've gotten to a place in America where, if someone doesn't agree with everyone, then they are punished for it."
Click here to vote on whether Miss California should have answered the question differently
Prejean, 21, insists her controversial answer "cost" her the crown. (Shanna Moakler, director of the Miss California USA pageant, denies this.)
Said Harmon, "I heard something in the car on the way over here, and it was like, 'She wasn't punished,' but she lost because of it. So she was punished."
"I find it incredibly disappointing," she went on. "I mean, that is what she thinks. That's what she believes. I'm not going to punish anyone for that. I don't know if she lost because of it, but if she did, I think that is very disappointing. In the Miss USA, she can't stand up for what she thinks or what she believes in? I don't understand that."
Harmon told Us she disagreed with those - including judge Perez Hilton, who posed the question - who said Prejean should have given a middle-of-the-road answer.
"People say she has to be PC ... no," Harmon said. "She's standing up for what she believes in. She didn't come out and say, 'I hate gay people.' That's not what she said at all. I think it's sad, I really do."

TV presenter wins Miss Universe Australia
Winner ... Rachael Finch. Photo: AFP
Follow your dreams and reach for the stars because one day you will get there.
So says Rachael Finch, a beautiful brown-eyed brunette from Townsville who was crowned Miss Universe Australia 2009 at Sydney's Hilton Hotel on Wednesday night.
The 20-year-old model and television presenter beat 31 other finalists to win the award formerly won by Jennifer Hawkins, who then famously went on to become Miss Universe in 2004.
That same year, Finch took out the Queensland young model of the year title in Townsville's Opal Fashion Bash pageant.
Model scout Henry Peterson encouraged her to enter the pageant after spotting her "underneath the wings of a Boeing 747 at Townsville Airport''.
"When I first saw her I knew she was special,'' he said.
"I told her: 'You'll be bigger than Jennifer Hawkins'.''
Rachael has since moved to Sydney, where she has obtained work through Chadwick model agency.
She is also a television presenter with Platinum Television, which provides video content for bars and events.
She described winning the Miss Universe Australia title as surreal.
"How do I describe the feeling? What words do I use because to me it's like a dream,'' she said.
"I feel like I'm in literally, a dream. It's surreal.''
For others wishing to follow in her footsteps, she said it was important to "stay focused, stay humble and be true to yourself''.
"Coming from such a small town it's not only somewhere to grow up that's naturally beautiful but you really learn the value of growing in that small community and you get a lot of support and love and you can take that in your heart and take that to a bigger city or move on with your life and your career and really make a change.
"Follow your heart and reach for the stars because one day you will get there and that is what this is all about.''

The contestant herself voiced the opinion that her answer led to her defeat, but added that she saw it as a personal victory since she lost the crown for a principled position and refused to profess a belief she did not believe in simply to pander to the judges.
Prejean was asked about marriage equality by openly gay judge and gossip blogger Perez Hilton during the April 19 contest, which was broadcast nationally as it unfolded in Las Vegas at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
Hilton inquired as to whether Prejean thought that the question of marriage equality should be something that each state in the U.S. decides for itself; Prejean responded with a blanket statement that marriage should be reserved as a right exclusive to heterosexual couples.
Said the Miss USA contestant, "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage," going on to say, "And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman.
"No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised," Prejean added.
Prejean subsequently lost the contest to Kristen Dalton, the contestant representing North Carolina; Prejean attributed the loss in an interview with right-wing media outlet Fox News to her response to Hilton’s question.
Co-hosts Nadine Velasquez ("My Name Is Earl") and Billy Bush ("Access Hollywood") oversaw the contest, which was judged by Kenan Thompson ("Saturday Night Live") and Kelly Monaco ("Dancing With the Stars"), as well as Hilton.
But it was Hilton who drew the attention of the right-wing press, both for having asked the politically charged question as well as for an insulting video blog in which he referred to Prejean using unflattering language.
Pundits and press from the right seized upon the exchange, the outcome, and an appearance by Hilton the following day on Larry King Live, as well as the video blog.
An April 21 article at conservative site News Busters went after Hilton for his coarse name calling, asking, "Want to appear as a champion of a cause without being held to account for the hateful name-calling you did in the name of your cause?"
The article answered its own query with, "Appear on CNN’s ’Larry King Live.’"
The article reported that Hilton, during his Larry King Live appearance, told the host of the talk show, "Well, I was given the opportunity, on this national platform to ask a question that I thought was relevant.
"And given the recent setbacks and advances that we’ve made in the fight for gay marriage, I thought it was a very important question for me specifically to ask."
The article also noted that Hilton said he had cleared the question beforehand with the beauty contest’s producers.
"I ran it by the producers beforehand and they signed off on it and everybody thought it was a good question.
"It wasn’t meant to be a big bomb," Hilton added.
"And I don’t think it was that hard of a question, either."
However, Hilton also indicated that in his view Prejean, as a contestant, ought to have leavened her response with an eye to the crown, saying, "Honesty is great. However, in an interview this morning, she said that the audience and the judges expected her to be politically correct."
Added Hilton, "Yes. I do expect Miss USA to be politically correct."
Added the gossip blogger, "Do we want a Miss USA that’s politically insensitive, that’s politically offensive? No.
"So I didn’t disagree with her not believing in the right for gays and lesbians to good evening equal under the law. I disagree with how she answered the question because Miss USA should be all-inclusive."
Added Hilton, "She should be my Miss USA and when she answered that question that way, it was instantly divisive and alienating to gays and lesbians and friends and supporters."
But the article went on to hoist Hilton on his own petard, noting that far from demonstrating an open mind with regard to Prejean’s answer, Hilton posted a video blog in which he attacked Prejean in a personal and derogatory manner.
Saying that her answer garnered boos from the audience, Hilton claimed, "That was the first time in Miss USA ever that a contestant has been booed."
Added the gossip blogger, "Now, let me explain to you she lost not because she doesn’t believe in gay marriage, Miss California lost because she is a dumb bitch."
Hilton’s Larry King appearance struck a more conciliatory tone, with Hilton talking about wishing to meet with Prejean in a convivial setting to educate her.
Said Hilton, "I would like to invite Miss California out to coffee."
Added the gossip maven, "That was a sincere invitation and I would like to talk to her because I think that when people don’t know gays and lesbians as human beings, it’s easier to feel that they shouldn’t have equal rights."
Prejean chalked up her loss to the question in an interview with Fox News, but insisted that, for her, the answer she gave was the only one she could honestly offer. Pundits hailed Prejean’s firm adherence to her beliefs.
At Mark Finkelberg’s conservative Finkelblog an April 21 article noted, "Making his case against Carrie Prejean, Perez proffered a pastiche of personal insult and intellectual incoherence. In contrast, Miss California took the high road, putting personal integrity ahead of temporal achievement."
The article reported that both Hilton and Prejean were interviewed by Matt Lauer.
When Lauer noted that Prejean had come tantalizingly close to the Miss USA crown, Prejean acknowledged that, adding, "And I’m so proud of myself. And I have so many people who are so proud of me. And [a win] wasn’t what God wanted for me that night."
Added the runner-up, "I wouldn’t change a thing. I wouldn’t be here right now with you if I were to be Miss USA, so I know that I had a purpose and I don’t take back what I said. I was true to myself, and I know now that I can go out and speak to young people about standing up for what you believe in and never compromising anything for anyone or anything, even if it’s the crown of Miss USA."
Other right-wing news outlets confined themselves to excoriating Hilton and attempting to turn the incident into an illustration of the larger marriage equality debate in America.
An April 20 Associated Content editorial by Carly Hart referenced an earlier Hilton blog article written mere weeks after voters in Californian narrowly approved Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that amended the California constitution in a way that rescinded the marriage rights of gay and lesbian families in that state.
The article reported that, in that blog, posted last Nov. 19, Hilton wrote about the state’s Supreme Court agreeing to hear a challenge to the amendment, "They’ve done the right thing today. They’ve done the right thing in the past. And they will (hopefully) continue to do what’s right with regard to our rights!"
Wrote the editorial’s author, "I can appreciate that as a gay man, he can certainly disagree with Prop 8. He can even be mad that it passed and work toward having the law changed in his state. That is how democracy works.
"Looking back to his November post, however, and dovetailing his sentiments with his diatribe about Miss California, Carrie Prejean, it is evident that Perez was fishing for an answer that he personally believed in, and not one that Carrie Prejean personally believed in," the editorial continued.
The op-ed piece went on to suggest that Hilton employs a double standard about when an answer to the effect that states should regulate marriage would be the "right" response. Noted the article, "As reported at nydailynews.com before the November ballot initiative for Prop 8, Perez Hilton decried the measure as nothing more than a way to ’write discrimination into the state constitution’ while he lashed out at an actor publicly supporting the Prop 8 measure."
Right-wing site Conservative Brawler took aim at Hilton with still less flattering commentary in am April 20 article, addressing the gossip blogger directly in the course of its text.
"I think you’re just bitter, Perez, because your attempt to strong arm the acceptance of gay marriage into yet another avenue of pop culture backfired," the article read.
"But I’m not terribly concerned that the question was asked, or even that the judges might have felt she didn’t frame her answer as well as she could have," the article went on, adding, "What I’m concerned with is the systemic defamation which followed and will continue to follow her answer."
The article went on, "You could see it on her face the instant she realized Perez would be asking her a question; she knew she was going to get a loaded question about homosexuality.
"She knew, no matter how well she framed her answer, she was going to be portrayed as an ignorant bigot."
Attempting to portray the incident as symptomatic of a larger cultural trend, the article went on, "I’m sorry to say this, but her situation is not unique. What happened to Miss California is just part and parcel of what conservatives face every day.
"We’re not permitted to voice our responses, and when we are brave enough to speak out against liberalism, we’re eviscerated."
Added the article, "What she faced on stage last night is what conservatives in nearly every college classroom across the country face every day."
The article went on to posit dire predictions for Prejean in a future it envisioned plagued by "liberals": "No doubt, Miss California will have one of two futures in the coming days. Either she will succumb to pressure and dilute her answer to get the dogs away off her throat, or she’ll stand her ground and have the MSM demonize her until her reputation and life are ruined."
An Associated Press article carried at EDGE dedicated a few sentences to reporting on the win by Miss North Carolina, who talked about her own perspective on the outcome, saying, "It feels really natural."
Added Ms. Dalton, "I’ve worked so be here and this has been my lifelong dream and it’s finally here.
"And whoever knew you could win in a turquoise gown?" quipped the new Miss USA.
Ms. Dalton’s prize package includes a residence in New York city for a year, as well as a salary and a scholarship to the New York Film Academy, the article reported, noting that Dalton will represent the U.S. at the Miss Universe pageant this coming summer.
The article also recalled that earlier in April, comments from the current Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, excited controversy. After visiting Guantanamo Bay, the site of infamous episodes of sexual humiliation and torture of detainees by American troops, Ms, Mendoza wrote that her excursion to the now-closed facility was "aloooot of fun."
The comment was stricken from the Miss USA Web site, the article said, after drawing withering criticism.
But the focus of the contest remained Hilton’s question, Prejean’s answer, and the controversy the exchange instantly generated.
The article quoted audience member Scott Ihrig, who was quoted as saying, "It’s ugly."
Added Ihrig, who is gay himself and who was in the audience with his life partner, "I think it’s ridiculous that she got first runner-up."
Said Ihrig of Prejean’s response to the question about marriage equality, "That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience.
"Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are."
One contestant’s mother--Charmaine Koonce, whose daughter, Bianca Matamoros-Koonce, represented New Mexico--offered a less nuanced, but equally heated, opinion.
"In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve!" the article quoted Koonce as stating.
Though she expressed pride in having stood by her principles, Prejean allowed as how being put on the spot by Hilton was tough for her. As reported at EDGE on April 21, Prejean, asked on Fox News, "Did your stomach sink when you first heard you picked Perez Hilton’s question?" answered in the affirmative.
Said Prejean, "I had a gut feeling.... Out of all the topics I studied up on, I dreaded that one, I prayed I would not be asked about gay marriage.
"If I had any other question, I know I would have won," added Prejean, going on to admit that being called a "stupid bitch" by Hilton in his video blog was distressing, but hastening to add, "I have no regrets about answering honestly.
"He asked me for my opinion and I gave it to him."
Added Prejean, "I have nothing against gay people, and I didn’t mean to offend anyone in my answer."
When asked about Hilton’s comment that he’d like to invite her for a cup of coffee and a chat, Prejean answered, "No comment!"
In addition to interviewing Prejean, Fox News posted an April 20 story in which it reported that a co-producer of the contest that Prejean won to become Miss California, Keith Lewis, stated that he was "personally... hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman."
Prejean, however, has continued to stick to her guns. Co-host Billy Bush also interviewed Prejean on his own radio program, Fox News reported, and was told, "I wouldn’t have had it any other way."
Added Prejean, "I stated an opinion that was true to myself, and that’s all I can do," she told Billy Bush, who hosted Miss USA, on his radio talk show on Monday.
Added Ms. Prejean, "It did cost me my crown."
Prejean allowed as how she could see Hilton’s point of view, saying, "It is a very touchy subject and he is a homosexual, and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would’ve wanted me to be more politically correct.
"But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything."
Indeed, another family member--Prejean’s sister--supported the contestant’s answer, even though personally she disagrees.
"She was just in my hotel room and she said, ’Sis, I’m not offended by anything that you said.
"’We have two different opinions and I love you because of it. I love you because you stood up for what was right, and it’s not a matter of being gay or not gay, it’s a matter of you competing for Miss USA and getting a question and answering it to the best of your ability,’" Prejean quoted her sister, an Air Force officer, as saying.

Pageant Officials Continue To Distance Themselves From Miss California

Shanna

She says:
"Miss California USA.
Current mood: tired
well, I just got back from a interview at CBS, and I can say after not sleeping for about 2 days and trying to sum up emotions in a 30 second interview wasn't easy, I wanted to take to my blog so I can put into words my thoughts and feelings, I find writing is best for me anyway.
First, I want to be clear on the fact, that I have NOT and will not abandon our reigning Miss California, thou I have a STRONG difference of opinion, I do NOT hate her, nor do I have any issue with her stating her opinion, she is not the first conservative christian titleholder to be in pageants. I agree with the majority that this IS what makes our country great and that is of course freedom of speech. She was asked a questioned and she answered it.
But I want to explain to the masses, what the TITLE of Miss USA stands for to me, and being a former Miss USA, I feel I have a pretty good sense of it. Miss USA
I think Miss California's willingness to stand by her convictions and ( in my eyes, simply made the question more personal then it needed to be,) has in essence made a great positive impact cause it has brought a issue important to me to the for front of the media and that is civil rights. I have blogged and petitioned for gay rights in the
I do however want to apologize to the men and woman who have continually supported the Miss California USA pageant. I know some were hurt and felt a sense of betrayal, but I thank you for your understanding, communication, love and continued support.

Miss USA runner-up sparks gay rights row
Stuff.co.nz
The runner-up to Miss USA has stirred controversy at this year's beauty pageant by saying she did not believe in gay marriage.
Miss California’s comments at Sunday's pageant sparked outrage, with some audience members going head-to-head with supporters after the show.
The controvery errupted after Miss California Carrie Prejean responded to a question by gay pageant judge and celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton on whether she believed in gay marriage.
Prejean told the audience her family believed "marriage should be between a man and a woman".
"No offence to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."
Keith Lewis, who runs the Miss California competition, told FOXNews.com he was "saddened" and "hurt" by Prejean's statement.
"I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone and religious beliefs have no politics in the Miss California family."
Co-director Shanna Moakler supported Mr Lewis' statement.
But Miss Prejean told Foxnews.com she had "no regrets" and was happy with the answer she gave.
Following the show a shouting match errupted.
"It's ugly," said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner.
"I think it's ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are."
But the mother of Miss New Mexico Charmaine Koonce supported the comments. "In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," she said.
It follows controversy earlier this month when Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza posted a blog from a trip to Guantanamo Bay, saying she was having a great time at a base that houses the notorious military prison.

Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton

Miss USA pageant: Gay marriage scandal over Miss California's comments
THE crowning of Miss USA has been hit with controversy after the runner up was booed for her answer to a question about legalising same-sex marriage.
Miss North Carolina USA Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA 2009 on Sunday, beating out 50 other beauty queens in the live pageant televised from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
But her runner up, Miss California Carrie Prejean, of San Diego, shocked the audience when she answered a question about legalising same-sex marriage. The tall blonde stumbled some before giving an answer that appeared to please the pageant audience. Here her response here, which shocked onlookers.
"We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage," Prejean said. "And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offence to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."
Some in the audience cheered, others booed. The answer sparked a shouting match in the lobby after the show.
"It's ugly," said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner. "I think it's ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are."
Charmaine Koonce, the mother of Miss New Mexico USA Bianca Carla, argued back.
"In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve!"
The pageant had enjoyed a scandal-free year until earlier this month, when Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza was skewered for a blog posting from a trip to Guantanamo Bay. The entry described having "aloooot of fun" at a base that houses the notorious military prison; it was later deleted from the pageant's Web site.

A atual Miss Brasil Oficial é Natália Anderle, do Rio Grande do Sul.
Miss Mundo Brasil

Show de elegância

Assista no vídeo abaixo a alguns momentos do ensaio:
"Eu me acho mais segura agora.

No ofrece ninguna otra razón.
