Visita à base para levantar o moral das tropas

Acompanhada de Crystle Stewar (Miss EUA), Dayana visitou as instalações da prisão mais polémica do mundo, onde os Estados Unidos detêm mais de 240 prisioneiros. Guantánamo tem sido alvo de imensas críticas e depois do 11 de Setembro tornou-se um símbolo do abuso de poder na guerra contra o terrorismo. É considerada ilegal pelo Governo cubano.
“Visitámos os campos de detenção e as celas, onde tomam banho, como se divertem com vídeos, aulas de arte, livros. Foi muito interessante”, escreveu a Miss Mundo.
Antigos prisioneiros e vários grupos de defesa dos direitos humanos acusaram o Governo americano de tortura física e psicológica. O Governo espanhol está a considerar investigar seis advogados ligados à administração Bush acusados de terem construído as bases para tornar legal o uso de tortura ao interrogar dos prisioneiros suspeitos de terrorismo.
O Governo britânico anunciou na semana passada a abertura de uma investigação para apurar se membros dos serviços secretos britânicos estariam ou não envolvidos na tortura de Binyam Mohamed, residente no Reino Unido e libertado de Guantánamo em Fevereiro. O Pentágono, após novas acusações, investigou e concluiu que todos os presos são tratados de acordo com a Convenção de Genebra.
O Presidente Barack Obama estipulou, em Janeiro, o prazo de um ano para o fim de Guantánamo enquanto prisão e a revisão caso a caso de todos os presos com o objectivo de definir qual o seu novo destino.

Miss Universe and Miss USA tour Guantanamo Bay prison
THE war on terror briefly became a fashion parade when Miss Universe and Miss USA took a firsthand look at the US prison in Guantanamo Bay.
The beauty pageant winners took part in a VIP tour to entertain American military personnel at the prison for terrorism suspects in Cuba the Associated Press reports.
Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza who was formerly Miss Venezuela blogged on the pageant website about her visit with Miss USA Crystle Stewart.
The beauty queen said the pair toured recreation and classroom areas of the prison and described the experience as interesting.
The women later saw the high-security perimeter fence and went to the beach.
Detention centre spokesman Navy Lieutenant Commander Brook DeWalt told AP he didn't know if any prisoners were "out and about'' when the two women were inside the prison camp.

MIAMI (Reuters) - A "relaxing, calm, beautiful place" may not be everyone's description of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the United States holds about 240 prisoners in a detention center that has drawn condemnation from around the world.
But this was the opinion of reigning Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, who visited the U.S. naval facility in eastern Cuba this month on a trip organized by the United Service Organizations (USO) which supports U.S. troops.
The Guantanamo Bay base, whose presence Cuba's government has contested as illegal for years, is used by U.S. authorities as a prison camp for foreign terrorism suspects. Critics have condemned it as a symbol of abuses in Washington's war on terrorism launched after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Caracas-born Mendoza, 22, who visited the facility March 20-25 along with Miss USA Crystle Stewart, 27, enthused about her Guantanamo trip as an "incredible experience" in a blog entry posted on the Miss Universe website dated March 27, 2009 (http://www.missuniverse.com/missuniverse/blog.php).
"It was a loooot of fun!," Mendoza wrote, describing how she and Stewart met U.S. military personnel and took rides around the camp, which is encircled by a barbed-wire fenced, minefields and watchtowers. She said they also visited a bar on the base and the "unbelievable" beach there.
"We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the(y) recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting," she wrote.
"I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful," she added.
Former detainees and human rights groups have alleged the use of torture, including "waterboarding" (simulated drowning) and other physical abuses, at the Guantanamo prison. Continued...

A viagem pela ilha durou cinco dias e a Miss Universo publicou em seu blog que Guantánamo é "suuuuper divertido". "Esta semana, Guantánamo!!! Foi uma experiência incrível... Todos os rapazes do Exército foram surpreendentes com a gente. Visitamos os acampamentos do detidos e vimos os presídios, o lugar onde eles tomam banho, como eles se divertem vendo filmes, tendo aulas de arte, livros. Foi muito interessante. Pegamos uma carona com os Mariners para conhecer a divisa com Cuba, onde eles nos contaram um pouco da história do lugar", escreveu.
"Eu não queria sair, era um lugar relaxante, tão calmo e bonito", falou sobre uma das praias que conheceu.
A base de Guantánamo é o local onde tropas americanas mantêm presos acusados de terrorismo. Há várias acusações de tortura contra os prisioneiros do local.
Dayana foi eleita Miss Universo em 13 de julho de 2008, e recebeu a coroa no Vietnã. Ela tem 22 anos e foi Miss Venezuela em 2007.

A Miss Universo 2008 fez uma visita de cinco dias a Guantánamo juntamente com a Miss EUA e conforme palavras da modelo em seu blog: “Foi muuuuito divertido”.
A venezuelana Dayana Mendonza foi eleita Miss Universo em julho do ano passado, no Vietnã. Desde então, viaja pelo mundo promovendo a coroa e também os patrocinadores do evento. Sua companheira de viagem para a ilha foi Crystle Stewart.
A base de Guantánamo é onde tropas americanas mantêm presos acusados de terrorismo e onde há acusações de tortura contra os prisioneiros (veja mais no infográfico abaixo).“Os rapazes nos mostraram como eles vivem por lá, o barco, como é o trabalho e nos mostraram a ilha. Foi muuuuito divertido”, escreveu Dayana em seu blog, datado em 27 de março. Ela e Crystle desembarcaram em Guantánamo dia 20.
“Vimos os cães militares que fizeram uma linda demonstração de suas habilidades. Todos os rapazes do Exército foram incríveis com a gente”, disse. “Vimos também as celas, onde tomam banho, onde têm os momentos de recreação, aulas de arte. Foi muito interessante.”
Dayana contou ainda que foi com os marines até o ponto onde Guantánamo faz fronteira com Cuba. “A água na baía é tããããão linda. Foi inacreditável. Dava para curtir por pelo menos uma hora. Conhecemos ainda a Rebeca e eu comprei um colar para me lembrar de Guantánamo :)”, escreveu a miss, com direito ao emoticon.
“Eu não queria sair de lá. É um lugar para relaxar, calmo e lindo”, disse ela, finalizando que no meio da semana já estava de volta a Nova York onde fez um ensaio fotográfico para a revista “People” espanhola.
Visitas de celebridades em Guantánamo e outros pontos onde há tropas americanas são comuns e fazem parte de um projeto para animar os soldados que prestam serviço ao país.
Is Cuba in Her Universe?

HAVANA TIMES, March 31 — Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, is back home from the US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and she says she “had a wonderful time” visiting several days with the soldiers as part of the U.S.O. Armed Forces Entertainment Tour.
Occupied territories and prison camps must be a lot of fun when you don’t have to meet the people whose land was taken or the inmates who have faced years of abuse and mistreatment.
One of the highlights according to Dayana’s blog http://www.missuniverse.com/missuniverse/blog.php was the military dogs who gave her “a very nice demonstration of their skills.” Something tells me her visit with the cute dogs was a little different than the canine-human encounters inside the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, established in 2002.
However, don’t get me wrong, Mendoza who traveled with Miss USA Crystle Stewart, did get a glimpse of the prisoner conditions: “We visited the detainee camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting,” said Mendoza.
After Miss Universe got a big welcoming lunch it was off to “one of the bars they have here on the base.” There, Dayana and Crystle heard first hand from the soldiers about life on Gitmo.

“We had a wonderful time, this truly was a memorable trip! We hung out with the guys from the East Coast [of the base] and they showed us the boat inside and out, how they work and what they do… it was a loooot of fun!”
One of the highlights for Miss Universe was: “We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they informed us with a little bit of history.” She didn’t elaborate on the content of the lessons.
The US military has held Guantanamo Bay since 1903 on what Cuba considers a totally illegitimate perpetual lease.
“I didn’t want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful,” said Mendoza who grew up in Venezuela but has lived in the US as a model for several years.
Miss Universe did not express any interest in visiting the part of Cuba governed by the Cubans. Perhaps because that part of the Caribbean island nation doesn’t participate in the contest that made her famous, or could it be that Cuba and Dayana are not really in the same universe?
