INTERNATIONAL supermodel, Michelle McLean, has heaped praise on Namibia’s modelling industry, claiming that despite its small population and the majority of its prospective models living in rural areas with little access to training, Namibia had passed the litmus test.

McLean, who spoke exclusively to Informanté on her way from Europe to South Africa, congratulated the two Namibian Face of Africa nominees, Albertina Shigwedha (19) and Maria Hiwelepo (24).
The South African based supermodel also lauded Miss Namibia organiser, Conny Maritz, who moulded her into stardom and has continued to shape the modelling industry for over a decade.
“In my opinion, Namibia has done incredibly well in the modelling industry both from a talent perspective and thanks to the training given by the likes of Maritz who has staged professional fashion shows and world class productions like the Miss Namibia Pageant for years,” McLean said.
McLean represented Namibia at international beauty pageants such as Miss World in 1991 and Miss Universe in 1992. She won the Miss Universe crown just after the country received its independence.
However, McLean regrets that most prospective models living in rural areas do not have the opportunity to promote their talent. “We must remember that Namibia only has a population of just about two million people, most of them live in the rural areas and our fashion industry is limited to the demand. It is for this reason that I believe our modelling industry is so small.”
Despite the challenges the modelling industry faces, McLean remains optimistic that it will continue to produce world class models. “This (challenge) does not change the fact that we have world recognised designers and photographers not to mention some of the worlds most gorgeous and talented models,” she said.
Apart from her modelling career, Michelle founded the Michelle McLean Children’s Trust in 1992, which focuses on the education and care of underprivileged Namibian children.
Michelle was also instrumental in bringing the Miss Universe pageant to Namibia in 1995 – placing Namibia’s modelling and fashion industry on the world stage.
To add to her world-class titles, Michelle in 1998 became only the second titleholder to receive the coveted Miss Universe Achievement Award; the first being Irene Saez of Venezuela in 1997.
