Participants ready for Miss Malaysia Universe pageant

By TAN KARR WEI

THERE is more to beauty pageants than looking beautiful for the cameras.

The 14 contestants in the 2008 Miss Malaysia Universe Pageant can attest to that, having been given an eventful week of activities leading up to the finals on Friday.

According to pageant organising chairperson Alice Lee, the activities were important for them to get to know the contestants better in view of the little time they had before the big day.

Taking things in stride: The 14 contestants are ready to take on the challenge in the Miss Malaysia Universe Pageant on Friday.

“The theme this year is “Real Women Behind the Beauty”. We're looking for a suitable lady to represent Malaysia. It is not easy so we use these activities to judge their character, mannerism and social skills. Beauty is from head to toe and also from within,” said Lee.

From media interviews to exercise sessions and competitions for the subsidiary titles, the young ladies are taking it all in their stride.

Levy Li Su Lin, 20, said that time management was crucial as she was a full-time student at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and a part-time model.

Being in front of the camera is nothing new to her because, as a broadcasting student, she had tried her hand at hosting TV programmes and emceeing.

“Just go with the flow, be confident, be friendly and take it as an experience of a lifetime,” said Li, who is representing the state of Terengganu.

Being the youngest in the group did not intimidate lanky Janice Yong Yan Hui, 19.

“People tend to look out for things like the youngest or the oldest contestants,” said the 174cm lass who is representing the state of Selangor.

Yong admitted that being in a beauty contest could be stressful but she is quite used to a busy lifestyle, as she is a full-time Psychology student who also teaches ballet and contemporary dance to young kids.

“You just need to be confident and strong to handle the stress and the criticism,” she said.

Soo Wincci, 22, who is currently studying for her MBA and Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP), considers the pageant a networking opportunity.

“This is also a chance for me to fill this chapter of my life with some wonderful experiences,” said Soo, who is representing the state of Pahang.

The winner will receive a cash prize of RM25,000, a crown, trophy and personal appearance assignments.

She will also get designer outfits worth RM60,000 to participate in the Miss Universe Pageant in Nha Trang, Vietnam from June 17 to July 15.

Miss Malaysia Universe will take place at The Gardens Hotel and Residences, Kuala Lumpur.
