Beauty queens on environment mission

The Miss Earth Foundation is more than just about a beauty contest. It is an organization which focuses on environmental protection and makes good use of information and communications technology (ICT).
In a presentation during the 2nd International ICT Conference held at the New World Renaissance Hotel last April 24, 2008, Catherine Untalan, project director of the Miss Earth Foundation, reminded the audience of the importance of knowledge coupled with action.
She shared the efforts of the Miss Earth Foundation to help spread awareness on various environmental issues. The foundation formed a special environmental school tour entitled "I Love My Planet Earth." This tour involves past and present Ms. Earth ambassadors who talk to students about the environment.
Their teaching strategies usually begin with a song, followed by a short lecture (reason being the short attention span of children). They also incorporate nature into storytelling and role-playing. Afterwards, the students are asked to sign a pledge wherein they promise to be young environmental advocates.
Water crisis
Untalan also emphasized the importance of ICT in propagating their environmental advocacy. Through videos and other viral channels, more and more people are being influenced to act for the environment. At the same time, ICT allows environmental advocates to express their passion in different ways.
Despite news of the rice crisis dominating the airwaves, the former beauty queen also pointed out other environmental issues that need attention.
"There is a water crisis," she said.
In her presentation, she said that although the earth is composed of 70% parts water, only 3% of it is potable and 1% of this drinkable water is frozen solid. Another 1% is too deep to be accessed. Doing the math, this only leaves humanity with 1% accessible potable water, she said.
In her charming way, she encouraged all of the people present in the room to take action, starting with their half-filled water goblets. She jokingly suggested that perhaps the waiters should wait until they are asked for water instead of constantly re-filling water goblets of each table. -J. Chan, abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak
