Miss Philippines

MANILA, Philippines—The 2008 Binibining Pilipinas pageant has attracted “really beautiful” contestants, in the words of Nadia Lee Cien Shami, last year’s Miss International bet.

“The judges will have a tough time,” said Nadia by way of assessing the candidates, who include aspiring lawyers and doctors, college graduates and students, certified public accountants, registered nurses and a teacher.

Efforts paid off

During the candidates’ presentation to the media last Thursday at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City, 2007 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Anna Theresa “Tere” Licaros said her efforts to encourage “girls of substance” to join the pageant seem to have paid off.

Licaros, a top student at the UP College of Law, brought home the country’s seventh Miss Photogenic award from the Miss Universe pageant.

Early favorites

Among the early favorites are Ateneo law students Kathleen Guerrero and Margarita Gutierrez; former Mutya ng Pilipinas runner-up Eizza Lim, former flight attendant Elizabeth Nacuspag and Kristelle Lazaro, a nurse at St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Coronation night is set on March 8 at the Araneta Coliseum, to be telecast on GMA 7 at 9:30 p.m
