Candacie Charles Miss Guyana World 2007

Candacie Charles Miss Guyana World 2007GUYANA CHRONICLE: SIXTEEN-year-old high school student Candacie Charles swept the Miss Guyana World competition Sunday evening, becoming the first ever national beauty queen of her age.Charles, an intern with the government Information Agency, was crowned amid a glittering gala affair at Buddy’s International Hotel. As per Miss World requirements, she has to be 17 to compete at the

With young beauty queens having a successful run at international pageants, like Aishwarya Rai, who was crowned Miss World as a teenager, and Amelia Vega, crowned Miss Universe while yet in school, can Candacie turn fortune on Guyana’s side?

She wrote the Caribbean Secondary education Certificate exams offered by the Caribbean Examinations Council this year and is awaiting results.

Candacie held her forte with the judges right through the competition with a radiant personality throughout the two and a half hour competition. An average teenager, she loves ice cream and chocolates, but cannot sleep without reading every night.

Her strongest competition for the night was Radha Charran, a Senior Audit Clerk with the Guyana power and Light, who towered physically over the other contestants and delighted the judges with a pleasant personality. She was chosen to represent Guyana at the Miss Intercontinental pageant.

Pageant enthusiasts would know that India’s Lara Dutta won the Miss Intercontinental Pageant in 1997 and went on to win Miss Universe in 2000, so Radha’s second prize is by no means of lesser magnitude.

Candacie took the edge over her in the final question. The teenager was asked who was her greatest role model and why. With girlish charm, Candacie revelled in admiration of her mother, saying her only prayer is to inherit half the strength of her mother.

Radha was asked how she would sell Guyana to the world, but she might have faltered in confidence and was not as smooth in delivery. She answered the question by saying that she would promote mainly the country’s endearing hospitality.

There should have been three finalists in the end, but the judges had a tough task of deciding who should go, and so put four finalists to answer a last question. Those two were Pamela McLean and Shammain Richmond.

Pamela, with a stunning face, could have eased her way to the crown, but failed to display the charm and radiance necessary for a national beauty pageant. You almost had to beg a smile out of her! Ah, too bad.

Richmond, who won the Best Smile prize hands down, failed in delivering a sound answer to her final question, and that put her as third runner-up, Pamela taking the edge for second-runner-up.

Sareeka Singh was included among the top five finalists.

The others who competed were Zameena Khan and Leshaun Morgan.

The judges for the competition included Kingsley Thorne of Miss Barbados World and Universe, designers Sonia Noel and Donna Ramsammy James, and chief judge, Pamela Dillon, who manages the Miss Guyana Talented Teen Pageant.

Miss Bolivia Universo

A Miss Cochabamba y a Señorita Santa Cruz.

¿Qué viene ahora?

Mi preparación para el Miss Universo. Le pondré más ganas.

Lara Dutta - Miss Universe 2000

“Comedy is my true calling”

After groping around in darkness for four years, erstwhile Miss Universe is finally coming to grips with her role in filmdom. Post Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Partner, Lara Dutta has found her groove alright. Her comic timing is in order and so is her style quotient. Togged in a simple polka-dotted brown dress, her smile seems to convey that style needn’t shout from the rooftops...Ms Dutta is making us proud as Screen’s Most Promising Newcomer awardee in the 2003 Andaaz...

There is no denying that you are in top form currently. But it has taken you a while to get there.
Oh yes, it has taken plenty of trial and error to assess my strengths and weaknesses. I believe experience is the best teacher. I have tried out a range of genres and set-ups before concluding that I have to make the right choice of films first. The script, my role in it and the people who are making the film are important because I must feel happy at work.

When did you realise that you were the comedy czarina?
I have no film background, so everything was a revelation for me. Almost a dozen different kind of films later did I understand that I was neither a drama queen nor a tragedy queen. No Entry was the turning point, that’s when it dawned on me that I had a flair for comedy. Like Sridevi and Juhi Chawla, comedy proved to be flattering for my on-screen persona. Comedy is my true calling.

But isn’t comedy a serious business, Lara?
Certainly it is. Laughter is tougher to beget than tears, I assure you. My stint in Bhaagam Bhag with phenomenal power houses Paresh Rawal and Govinda helped me get the right comic timing. You have to be on the ball, you can’t lose that moment - that’s the key to good comedy.

There she goes...the beauty pageant era is over

By ERIKA GONZALEZ

Scripps Howard News Service
Thursday, July 26, 2007

Bye-bye, Miss American pie.

These days, beauty pageants need cheesecake to capture the public's attention.

The semi-suggestive photos that recently threatened to dethrone Miss New Jersey probably garnered contestant Amy Polumbo more buzz than she'll get from appearing in the aging Miss America pageant. In fact, more people tuned in to see Polumbo's playful pictorial on the Today show than watched the pageant last year.

The beauty competition has drawn so little interest from viewers that Country Music Television, which began broadcasting the event two years ago after ABC dropped it, has decided against airing the contest next year.

Yep, you read that right. Not even Country Music Television, which regularly plays reruns of the" Dukes of Hazzard," wants to be associated with something so outdated.

And while wild child Tara Conner helped boost the ratings for this year's Miss Universe pageant, the 7.4 million who tuned in still represent a decline from the 8 million viewers who watched the broadcast two years ago.

Beauty pageants are simply past their prime. Nearly everything about them -- the painted-on smiles, the well-rehearsed, robotic answers to interview questions, the term "evening wear" -- screams 1955.

Sometimes, old-fashioned can work (consider Shakespeare) but these competitions are just boring. Simply posting pictures and biographies of contestants online and allowing the public to crown a queen might be a more compelling option.

Thanks to reality television, we don't need beauty contests.

Craving a battle between beauties? Check out "America's Next Top Model," which boasts a panel of judges who could teach traditional pageant boards a thing or two about damaging a young woman's self-esteem.

Or if the talent portion is more your thing, look no further than "American Idol." There's no denying that looks play a part in the hit series, no matter how many times Paula, Randy and Simon insist the show is purely a singing competition. For proof, consider Melinda Doolittle, arguably last season's best singer. She was often compared to a troll on message boards and placed third.

Maybe you're one of those individuals who believes that brains factor into the decision- making process for pageant judges. If that's the case, the recently resurrected "Apprentice" might be a safe bet. Trump's boardroom is just bursting with smart, attractive executives.

Worried you'll miss the swimsuit portion of the pageants? There's always "Survivor."

If reality television doesn't serve as a suitable replacement for pageant-lovers, there's always the red carpet. The gowns celebrities sport at the Oscars, Emmys and other award shows usually linger longer in our memories than anything a pageant winner might wear (unless, of course, it's two pumpkins poised in front of Miss New Jersey's chest).

And what about the all-important interview segment? Simply pick up one of the dozen celebrity magazines littering the supermarket checkout aisle. It should be clear by now that Angelina Jolie intends to save the world.

For die-hard pageant supporters (and there's plenty of them, judging by the cottage industry that's sprung up to serve contest participants), there is no replacement for such events. They'll argue that banishing beauty contests would deprive society of all the good, charitable work performed by the winners, and would leave beauty queens without much-needed scholarship money.

So, why not turn Miss America, Miss USA, Miss Universe and the rest of the lot into pure scholarship competitions (based on academic performance) and require winners to do charitable deeds as part of the win? Imagine a day when young women could compete for the title of Miss America without having to literally glue bikini bottoms onto their butts.

Now, that's a pretty picture.

Riyo Mori, Miss Universo 2007

Miss Earth: The Ultimate Beauty Pageant

The story of the Miss Earth Beauty Pageant, its humble beginning, cause, ups and downs and unstoppable success.

Miss Earth contestants in the Philippines

Like every success story, it starts with a humble beginning. And for the Miss Earth Pageant, it all started with a humble ambition of saving the environment.

In 2001, the Manila-based events company Carousel Productions, Inc. decided to create a brand new approach in promoting environmental awareness, and eventually came up with an effective channel - a beauty pageant. Thereafter, the Miss Earth pageant was born.

Initially, everyone thought it would just be another international beauty competition, but because of its environmental platform, Miss Earth created a noticeable mark in the pageant world and earned international respect. Thus, in Miss Earth, beauty is not the main factor, but a vehicle to promote environmental awareness and human concern.

Year after year, the Miss Earth pageant grew, with growing number of countries participating and more international attention received. And in 2004, Miss Earth was recognized by the international beauty pageant critics as one of top three grand slam pageants, taking the Japan-based Miss International out of the league.

In 2005, Miss Earth was declared the most anticipated beauty event in the world for having the most competitive set of candidates (compared to its grand slam colleagues Miss Universe and Miss World). As a result, Miss Earth's worldwide television broadcast in Star World gained the highest rating ever on any beauty event with its official website (www.missearth.tv) getting a phenomenal popularity rate.

Elsewhere in the world, the pageant’s popularity has continuously increased. With more women wanting to become Miss Earth, the number of national Miss Earth pageant has grown on every continent as well. At present, Miss Earth holds the record of having the greatest number of national-level contests, and continuously growing.

Miss Earth nowadays is also considered as the “toughest” international beauty contest. From the quality of candidates to the selection process, the pageant organizers have the most scrupulous criteria. Seemingly never-ending interviews with hard to answer questions are always on the way to the crown.

The 6th edition of Miss Earth erased the records of its previous years. Miss Earth 2006 was more publicized and much more competitive girls vied for the crown. It was a real success story despite the mishaps Carousel Productions had when the supposedly host country Chile failed to meet the requirements of the host committee.

Failure of holding the pageant off the Philippine shores was behind Miss Earth. They have to stage it back to Manila with a promise that "grand and prestigious" it will be. And Miss Earth fulfilled its promise. It was an astounding finals night at the National Museum in Manila, leaving every viewer spectacled with the event.

Behind all the success Miss Earth has gained and is continuously gaining, its environmental cause was never forgotten. The Miss Earth winner tours and works worldwide as spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental groups. Moreover, national Miss Earth winners from various nations are doing their own part in their home countries.

Now on its seventh year, the Miss Earth pageant may have been floating on the sky of success, yet it has kept its feet on the grounds of a planet she has promised to heal.

Recycled fashion has the Wow factor

PHIL REID/The Dominion Post

WOW FACTOR: Lorraine Downes models a WearableArt entry in Wellington.

In spring colours of lemon, yellow and green, and made from recycled materials that include an old lampshade and a flax basket, the first World of WearableArt entry has been unveiled in Wellington.

The awards show is still two months away but for the first time one of the garments has been revealed ahead of the event with a sneak preview modelled by former Miss Universe and Dancing With the Stars winner Lorraine Downes.

Created by New Zealand fabric artist Susan Holmes, a previous World of WearableArt supreme award winner, the outfit features hoops made from fencing wire, dramatic shoots of green, a headpiece made from a woven flax basket, and a bodice from remodelled "pre-loved" fabrics and a recycled lampshade.

Ms Downes had to hold on to her hat in a stiff Wellington breeze on the waterfront yesterday as she showed off the garment, which she said was "really, really light to wear".

Ms Holmes was commissioned by World of WearableArt long-term sponsor Montana to design a garment to celebrate its Brut Cuvee sparkling wine.

She was inspired by visiting the winemaker's Brancott Winery in Marlborough.

"I took my cues from the rolling hills at the winery, the weather, the vines, soil and grapes. The colours I have used represent the hues of nature," she said.

Her garment will feature in the World of WearableArt show, which opens in Wellington on September 20 and has 10 performances.

Glory forever

By Giovanni Paolo J. Yazon

IT WAS only like yesterday when Gloria Diaz (Gloria Maria Aspillera Diaz) put the entire nation into a “state of jubilation,” when as an 18-year-old sophomore of Saint Scholastica’s College, she was crowned Miss Universe, the first ever Filipino woman to win the title in July 19, 1969—two days before astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins landed on the moon.

That same week, then United States President Richard Nixon was quoted as saying: “When America conquered the moon, the Philippines conquered the universe!”

All these things happened 37 years ago—and life has never been the same again for Gloria ever since! Recalling that “glorious day” still makes her feel if not triumphant, more important.

Believe it or not, she was once called the “ugliest duckling” in their family. Moreover, she considers herself as the least talented among her 12 siblings who can either dance, paint, or cook. The beauty title somehow modified her outlook as the “least talented, but the luckiest.”

Luck, according to her, played an important part to her victory. “There were many ladies who were more beautiful… but in the end, it all boils down to the judges’ preferences. It’s [just] being at the right place, [at the] right time, and [with the] right set of judges,” she said.

If she didn’t become Miss Universe, she wouldn’t have all the good things she has attained in life now. She wouldn’t have been given the opportunity by producers and directors to do lead roles, like her launching movie, Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa. “People would have easily forgotten me [if I wasn’t a Miss Universe].”

Diaz is now a well-respected actress in film and television. She already realized her “ultimate dream” of receiving an acting award in 1998, when she won as Best Supporting Actress for the film José Rizal where she played the role of Teodora Alonzo, the mother of our national hero. Just recently, she was honored as Famas Best Supporting Actress in her role as a spinster adoptive mother in the movie Nasaan Ka Man.

She’s been in show biz for 31 years now and she attributes her longevity to discipline, determination, hard work and being happy with what she’s doing.

Though she’s separated from her husband, businessman and former Makati Councilor Bong Daza, both are still good friends. She’s a mother of three—22-year-old Rafael, 19-year-old Isabelle and 16-year-old Ava.

At 56, she has maintained her ravishing looks by sleeping six to seven hours a day. She plays tennis every day to maintain her svelte figure.

Despite all the “troubles”—like her love affairs which became tabloid fodders—and obstacles she went through—such as the death of her youngest sister Rio due to colon cancer three years ago—all of us witnessed the resilience of her beauty and the calmness of her spirit.

She keeps on conveying to us the message that beauty is more than skin-deep. It’s like a gem that values inner strength and great wisdom that goes with age.

Though the universe is like a big spectacle of life for her—full of colors, surprises and challenges that are yet to be discovered and defeated—one thing is sure: Gloria Diaz will forever be a winner!

A peneira

NADINE NJEIN, MISS LIBAN 2007

• Tu as un petit ami ?
- Oui.

Pourquoi ?

Band quer tornar Miss Brasil reality show

Arrogant and dumb: Local celeb hacks slam Miss Universe Riyo Mori

"Making up her eyes to emphasize her 'Oriental Exoticism' isn't a look that really appeals to Japanese."

Riyo Mori, the 2007 Miss Universe, is copping a beating from the domestic media, according to Shukan Shincho (7/19).

"There were loads of reporters who saw her who said the first thing that came to mind was 'How the hell did she become Miss Universe?'" an entertainment beat reporter tells Shukan Shincho. "I thought that making up her eyes to emphasize her 'Oriental Exoticism' isn't a look that really appeals to Japanese.

"What really shocked me was the arrogant way she went about things. She used a microphone to point at the reporters asking her questions, and the way she stood with her hands on her hips as she talked created a bad impression. That might be the way they do things in America, but a female Japanese performer would never act that way. She looked down on Japan, too, by saying that she had no idea who her favorite Japanese performer was. And when one reporter asked her what it felt like to have been chosen as the world's most beautiful women, she spat, 'That's a mistake. Miss Universe is not a beauty contest.' That got most of the reporters tittering."

Mori is apparently taking steps to try and gain some popular support.

"She's contacting all the biggest talent agencies to find out if they're interested in putting her on their books. Miss Universe has to spend a year traveling around the world and helping out with AIDS charities, so any concrete moves won't be able to come out until the year after next," a TV industry insider says.

Mori can take heart from the success of Kurara Chibana, the runner-up in last year's Miss Universe contest who now works as a reporter for a TV current affairs program called "News Zero."

Shukan Shincho (7/19)

But the entertainment beat reporter is not too bullish about the 20-year-old beauty queen's chances in Japan's cutthroat entertainment world.

"Considering she won the title, she has fair grounds to think she'll do better (than Chibana). But she's not really the best speaker in the world and hasn't got any of the intellect apparent in Chibana, a graduate of the prestigious Sophia University," the showbiz reporter tells Shukan Shincho. "And with the arrogance that she's got, it makes the average woman working on TV look a lot more attractive." (By Ryann Connell)

Neste mesmo ano o time celeste ganhou o Brasileirão, a Copa do Brasil e o Campeonato Mineiro.

Infonet - Como é a recepção do público?

A beleza superficial vai embora.

Miss Sergipe

Using beauty to save a life

Using beauty to save a life

Beauty queens are not admired for their selflessness.

When contestants in a beauty pageant describe their humanitarian goals -- to feed starving children or achieve world peace -- I tend to roll my eyes in disbelief. It's hard to take such statements seriously when the speaker is wearing a string bikini and 6-inch heels.

But Nazanin Afshin-Jam, a former Miss World Canada and current pop singer, has tossed my preconceived notion into the fire. While reading her story recently, I was riveted.

Afshin-Jam saved a teenager's life.

Last year, she received an e-mail from someone who had Googled "Nazanin" and clicked on her name. The stranger was trying to find out more about the story of Nazanin Fatehi, an 18-year-old Iranian girl on death row for killing a man who tried to rape her and her 15-year-old niece. The e-mail asked if Afshin-Jam could use her fame to help the girl. Haunted by the story, Afshin-Jam decided to get involved.

She discovered that the girl was 17 when she stabbed her attacker in self-defense. Despite the circumstances, Fatehi was sentenced to the death penalty, which, in Iran, is imposed on people as young as 15.

Afshin-Jam initiated a campaign to save the teenager, and attracted worldwide attention through a petition drive. After she persuaded the United Nations to pressure Iran for a retrial, Fatehi was found innocent and was freed in January.

Now, Afshin-Jam is trying to put an end to all teenage executions in Iran through the organization she co-founded: stopchildexecutions.com.

Amnesty International has documented 21 executions of child offenders in Iran since 1990. Currently, there are at least 71 minors on death row in Iran.

I find it serendipitous that a native Iranian woman was able to save the life of a female teen, since in Iran, women's rights are considered to be far less important than those of men. The country's interpretation of Islamic law imposes severe restrictions on women, requiring them to have a male guardian's permission for numerous activities, even to work. And a man's court testimony is considered twice as important as a woman's. Therefore, if a woman is accused of a crime, her defense could be considered invalid if a man claims her statements are false.

Afshin-Jam, who was born in Tehran and immigrated to Canada as a child, knew how difficult it would be to persuade the government to release the teenager. But she proceeded anyway, out of a hope that she could use her face, her name and her money for a greater good.

It takes courage, not to mention compassion and trust, to help a stranger. It's easy to ignore a person or delete an e-mail, by saying "That's not my problem." We all do it, whether out of a sense of helplessness or because of the sheer volume of worthy causes, insurmountable problems and people in need.

But helping one individual can have extensive repercussions.

Afshin-Jam's determination to save her namesake's life not only vindicates Fatehi, but it also has the potential to set a precedent for human rights in Iran.

Such selfless actions reflect true beauty.

New format for Miss Jamaica World

There's a new selection process to choose Jamaica's Miss World contestants. Those prospective contestants will send entry forms and photos via email. But, this time, based on the entry forms and photos, a select group of judges will narrow down the initial list of contenders and invite the chosen entrants to appear before them. It is from this second batch of ladies that the final 16 will be chosen. Mickey Haughton-James, pageant organiser said there was no foreign influence in the decision.

"We constantly reinvent ourselves," he said. "The new system will be a less traumatic event, so to speak. It's especially good for the girls who live abroad.

They wouldn't have to waste their time to come down and be disappointed," he explained. The new format is also more private as the first time the wider public will see any of contestants is at the swimwear and sportswear presentation and sashing on Saturday July 14, at the Sovereign Centre. He joked that in years past at the public elimination shows, some persons came to the pre-judgings/eliminations to witness the slip-ups of the prospective candidates.

"We feel this (the system) is very efficient and even some girls who might not have entered before may do so now," he added. The finalists will undergo the usual intensive training in grooming, stage presentation, speech and physical conditioning. The pageant finals will be staged August 18 at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel.

Miss Jamaica World 2007 will depart the island on November 1 to compete in the Miss World contest on December 1.

The new format is also more private as the first time the wider public will see any of contestants is at the swimwear and sportswear presentation and sashing on Saturday July 14, at the Sovereign Centre.

Revealed: The secret Miss England hid from her rivals

By ANGELLA JOHNSON With her glamorous looks and perfect size-eight figure, the newly crowned Miss England is a picture of perfection.

But Georgia Horsley has revealed she kept a secret from the other contestants - she is totally deaf in one ear.

Georgia no longer tries to hide her deafness

And she almost missed her crowning moment because she didn't hear her name being announced as the winner at the end of the three-day finals last weekend.

"I stood on the stage with the other six finalists and there was an uproar after the two runners-up were placed,' said 20-year-old Georgia, a beauty therapist and part-time model from Malton, North Yorkshire.

"Everyone was cheering and clapping when the winner was announced. But the speaker was on my right side, where I'm totally deaf, so I only heard a muffled sound. I had no idea who'd won and just stood there clapping with the other girls."

"After a while one of them tapped me hard on the back and said, 'It's you, silly.' I was stunned and it took a moment or two before I walked to the front of the stage."

"At first I was worried people might have thought me stupid or something and it was at that point I decided I didn't want to keep my deafness hidden any more."

Georgia was taken to hospital with suspected meningitis as a two-year-old, but it was not until she was five that doctors realised she was deaf in her right ear.

"As I grew up I didn't want people to know in case they treated me differently or made fun of me,' she said.

"I wanted to be like normal kids. But it did mean that I had a hard time hearing the teachers at school and I was bullied because I kept asking them to repeat things.

"Sometimes people thought I was being rude when I didn't respond. But as I got older I learned to stand in a way that meant people talked into my good ear."

Georgia says she decided to talk about her deafness to help remove some of the stigma associated with the disability. "I can show that it is nothing to be ashamed of,' she said. "It has not stopped me achieving my dream to be a beauty queen."

Georgia's prizes include a £15,000 designer wardrobe, the use of a convertible car for a year, a luxury holiday and a trip to China for the Miss World contest in December

Amy Polumbo (Miss New Jersey) scandal, photos and blackmail

Amy Polumbo (Miss New Jersey) scandal, photos and blackmail Amy Polumbo, the 2007 Miss New Jersey, held a press conference to announce that she will not give in to threats and blackmail. The 22-year-old Miss New Jersey is determined not to let the blackmailer win.

According to Amy Polumbo's lawyer, Anthony Caruso, a package of photos of the beauty have been received, and the anonymous sender is asking Miss New Jersey to give up her Crown by Friday, or her pictures will be made public. Her lawyer comments that the pictures show Amy Polumbo with friends, and some of them "may have been pictures that she posted some years ago on a private web site".

Caruso declined to elaborate further, but said that the blackmailers simply try to make the pictures out worse than they really are. He didn't want to say anything else, as more pictures could arrive and change everything. The latter sparked a search frenzy on the Internet today - everyone seems to be looking for the private website hosting the scandalous pictures of Amy Polumbo. No "winners" so far.

Amy Polumbo won Miss New Jersey in June, which gave her the right to compete in the Miss America beauty pageant. Polumbo had entered and won her only other pageant appearance as Miss Seashore Line.

Ironically, when Amy Polumbo won the Crown, she said that she would like to raise more awareness and education of Internet safety issues to help protect children from cyber-predators and dangerous situations.

Magna Cum Laude to Represent Trinidad and Tobago at Miss Earth 2007

A 'Magna Cum Laude' Morgan State University (USA) graduate will represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Miss Earth 2007 beauty pageant.

When is Miss Earth 2007? The 7th edition of this fairly new pageant organized by Carousel Productions Inc, will take place on October 14, 2007. The host city is again Manila, Philippines.

Clearly capable of being smarter than the rest, the question is will the pageant judges favour her although she lives in the United States. Previous foreign-based Misses representing Trinidad and Tobago outside of Trinidad have had a hard time convincing some judges.

However, Carleen Ramlochansingh (left), T&T's candidate to the burgeoning Miss Earth 2007 pageant, has triumphed before while living outside of Trinidad and Tobago.

She represented her country at the Miss Caraibes Hibiscus Pageant, in December 2006 at the Casino Royale Theater, Maho, St Maarten. She was awarded the title of Best Traditional Costume and placed an overall second runner up.

Stepup Pageants, Carleen's promoters describe her as follows.

A harmonious blend of Indian, Spanish and African ancestry, was born in the magnificent city of San Fernando, Trinidad, but grew up the academic capital of the West Indies, St. Augustine.

Carleen entered this world to parents, Carol and Joseph Ramlochansingh. She has one sister Carlana.

She fulfilled her primary school education at Curepe Presbyterian School and attended high school at St. Joseph Convent, St. Joseph. She then chose to pursue her tertiary education at the prestigious Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland.

Carleen graduated in May 2006 with honors, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Marketing. During her tenure at Morgan State, she had a great impact on the university and headed several Caribbean organizations and associations using her talents to always bring Caribbean people of diverse heritage together.

Upon graduation, Carleen relocated to New York City to launch her career as marketing strategist in the financial district. This is when, the new resident of Brooklyn, entered and placed an overall first runner up in the Miss Trinidad and Tobago New York Pageant, and also captured the trophies for Miss Photogenic and Miss People’s Choice.

As a result, she was the delegate elect to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Miss Caraibes Hibiscus Pageant, in December 2006 at the Casino Royale Theater, Maho, St Maarten. Once again Carleen was victorious. She was awarded the title of Best Traditional Costume and placed an overall second runner up.

In fall 2007 she will begin her MBA in International Business at St. John’s University, which will include a semester in Rome, Italy. After which she plans to pursue her JD in an effort to practice Corporate Law, possibly followed by a PhD in Business Ethics & Policy. Eventually, she would love to teach Business at the University-level.

Her life ambition is to create a non-profit organization to help underprivileged gifted young women afford tertiary education through scholarships. Furthermore, her ultimate goal is to launch her own chain of fashion clothing stores in both the Caribbean and the United States. When her schedule permits, Carleen takes pleasure in traveling, sightseeing and spending time with family and friends. She is also very athletic and enjoys a friendly game of soccer, badminton and cricket.

After winning national title, Georgia has her sights on global crown

Georgia Horsley, the new Miss England
Georgia Horsley, the new Miss England

SHE'S conquered York, and she's conquered England. Now the city's star beauty is preparing to go global.

North Yorkshire model Georgia Horsley says she is still coming to terms with the excitement of being crowned Miss England 2007, after an exhilarating three-day contest against 91 other competitors.

The 20-year-old, who was Miss York in 2005, spearheaded a dazzling double for the city, with this year's Miss York Naomi Smith finishing second in the national event.

Georgia will now represent England at the glamorous Miss World event in China later this year. But for now, she's still happy to revel in the moment.

Speaking to The Press, she said: "It has just not sunk in yet that I am Miss England. People keep calling me Miss England, and I am not recognising that's me. It's just unreal."

She added: "I think when I do my first job as Miss England, that's when it will sink in. Or maybe if I walk down the street and someone recognises me as Miss England!"

Georgia said her phone had been red-hot since the final, with friends and family ringing to congratulate her, and national magazines such as Hello! seeking interviews and photo-shoots.

She said: "It's just so wonderful. It's going to open so many doors for me."

Looking ahead to December, Georgia said: "I cannot believe I'm going to be spending a month in China. I have never been before, so it will be a great experience. It's a pity it's so far from home, so not all my friends and family can come."

Asked what it would mean to be crowned Miss World, Georgia said: "I cannot even begin to imagine. I cannot imagine being in Miss World, let along winning it."

But the Chinese adventure is not all fun for Georgia - before she can go she has to receive various injections against diseases. "It's not the most glamorous part," she joked.

Reliving the moment when she was named Miss England, Georgia said: "There were little rumours about certain people having won, but I was not one of them. I had absolutely no idea that I was going to win.

"I was overwhelmed when they said. The final seven were stood backstage in a circle, holding hands, and when they called my name out I was just in shock."

Georgia's stairway to stardom began in 2005, when she was crowned Miss York. Since then, The Press has charted her rise.

She said: "I give a huge thank you to The Press for all their support over the past two years, and the readers who voted for me."

Georgia's sister, Lauren, also helped the campaign by setting up a support group on the popular website facebook.

A long way WITH FAH

Singh's grand procession to deliver Natalie Glebova to her Russian hometown was a huge success - almost

The bus pulls up to a hotel in the town of Taupse, Russia, and the waiting crowd grows excited. Natalie Glebova appears at the vehicle's door and steps down into the arms of her grandparents, and camera flashes light up the scene.

This is Natalie's hometown, and she and an entourage of Thai reporters and photographers have just spent four hours on a zigzagging road crossing the Caucasus Mountains from the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The whole trip has been arranged by Natalie's employer, Singha Corp, as a promotion for its B-ing energy drink. The scenario is that seven B-ing bodyguards escort her back to her hometown after 13 years' absence.

Natalie, of course, left Russia for Canada, which she represented in the 2005 Miss Universe competition. The contest was held in Thailand, Natalie won, was courted by Thai companies, moved to Thailand and was wooed by tennis ace Paradorn Srichaphan.

Now we're in the little town of Taupse, among the first Thais to witness the excitement of Natalie's long-awaited homecoming.

It's like a scene in a movie. The whole town has turned out to greet their world-famous beauty queen.

Natalie, still wearing her yellow-wristband tribute to the King of her new homeland, is in time for the annual promenade to the town square.

There she joins the mayor onstage to greet the citizenry. Later there are fireworks and dinner with her grandparents and the mayor.

One of the residents, Svetlana Stoyanova, asks her friend Anna Koralyora whether Taupse was mentioned during the Miss Universe broadcast. Anna assures her that it was.

Koralyora says Natalie is the first international celebrity to get such a festive welcome home in Taupse, a town of 70,000. It wasn't a big deal when world chess champion Vladimir Klamnik came home to visit, she points out.

Grigory Kotlyarov is excited at Natalie's arrival - he thinks she's a major babe, and who's going to argue? "I love my wife, but I also like Natalie!" he laughs.

So does Thailand. Natalie is set to become an in-law - sapai khon thai - of the Srichaphan clan when she marries Paradorn on November 29. She has, as her fiance put it, struck a chord with the Thai people. She's one of us.

Having established her beauty credentials by taking the Miss Universe crown away from a bevy of Latin lovelies, using a combination of grace, cheery optimism and an expert wai, she set about showing just how smart she is too.

The Tourism Authority was the first to tap her appeal, putting her in a TV commercial promoting Thai hospitality with that terrific wai. A year later she was teaching the gesture to contestants in the Miss Universe pageant in Los Angeles.

Natalie passed on her crown and got back to Thailand. She donned a yellow T-shirt and joined the crowds signing a book of best wishes for His Majesty the King while he was being treated at Siriraj Hospital.

Meanwhile a slew of business deals was already hatching. Singha recruited her as an ambassador and quickly earned back its outlay when a reporter challenged her about promoting alcohol. "I'm promoting the brand as a whole," she answered, cool as a cucumber, "not alcohol in particular."

Television viewers got used to her smiling, steady determination as camera crews taped her learning to cook Thai dishes and taking language lessons from TV tutor Andrew Biggs. It wasn't long before she was pronouncing for all to hear, "Fah rak Phi Ball mak mak, kha." Fah loves Ball very much, she said, using her and Paradorn's nicknames.

Singha stoked the romance when it had her courtside at the Thailand Open 2006, where it was one of the sponsors. She watched Paradorn beat Britain's Tim Henman and then - with 6,000 fans at Impact Arena watching and lots more looking on via TV - she rewarded "Ball" with a smashing kiss on the cheek.

Last October Natalie released her first book, "Happy, Healthy, Beautiful", a guide to looking great, and it appears to be the tip of the Natalie Enterprises iceberg. She's since become the spokesperson for BSC and Better Vision, as well as Singha.

With BSC, the cosmetics-and-clothing company that put Miss Universe in swimwear, she's marketed a food supplement and other healthy products and will write more books.

"I want to do business based on what I have a passion for," she says. "It's not about how much money I can make, but about how to help people."

On another occasion, she memorably said, "I was born in Russia and grew up in Canada, but Miss Universe was born in Thailand - and I'd like to be here."

She can stay as long as she likes, but in the meantime there were roots to be traced. During her six days in Russia - and at no point did she seem the least bit pretentious - Natalie got a kick out of seeing Moscow and St Petersburg for the first time. She joined everyone else snapping photos even as everyone else was taking her picture.

Interestingly, she doesn't like shopping. Nan Pookkesorn, her personal assistant, revealed that Natalie opted for the gym instead of the shops when they were in Hong Kong and Melbourne. "What's there to buy?" the beauty queen told her. "I'm not into buying."

It might be argued that she already has everything, but there was unfinished business in Russia, and an unexpected surprise.

On the final day there, after a two-hour flight from Moscow to Sochi and the long bus ride to Taupse, there was a twist in the ending to this fairytale homecoming.

The plan had been that everyone would accompany Natalie to her grandparents' house where she grew up. Instead, she announced that the big moment was going to be a private one.

Not even her "bodyguards" - whose mission was to deliver her to their front door - were going to see the get-together with her grandparents in their home. Nor would she divulge where the house was.

The press - all the Thais - were crestfallen after coming so far. But all they could do was admire her guts for putting her foot down about the change in plans, and taking consolation that, after the visit, she was coming home with them.

Deviens Miss France

A droite ! A gauche !"
