Lara has spoken out about the pressures on women in Bollywood

Bollywood actress Lara Dutta has spoken out about the pressures on women in the Indian film industry.

The former Miss Universe said that women are expected to look good and that they often face unwanted advances from film bosses saying they can help their career, CNN-IBN reports.

"A lot of films that I have done were packaged in such a way that as a woman actor there wasn't much to do," she told the news channel.

"Actors have to concentrate on how they look onscreen because today that has taken over what talent one has got, which is really sad."

Lara also claimed that a gap in pay for male and female Bollwood stars was "unfair", but said the hero "sells more at the box office".

The 28-year-old star of No Entry and Zinda opened up about notorious 'casting couch' ordeals.

"You instinctively read an advance coming at you," she said.

"Most girls who go through an experience like this expect something to come out of it and when that doesn't happen you feel used and abused."

And she gave her advice to young girls hoping to break into acting.

"People will try to take advantage of you, promising you the earth which you will not necessarily get in the end. Get up and be smart about it and understand that."

Lara recently starred in the comedy Bhagam Bhaag alongside Paresh Rawal and Govinda.
