Beauty makes up for school rebuff

Jennifer Hawkins set schoolboys' hearts fluttering during the visit

An Australian beauty queen who accepted then rejected a teenage boy's request for a date to his school dance made up for it with a visit to his school.

Former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins initially agreed to partner Daniel Dibley, 17, to the end-of-year dance at Bathurst High School, west of Sydney.

But she later pulled out fearing the publicity would overshadow the party for the school's final year students.

To make up for it, she visited the school and went for lunch with Daniel.

She also spoke to the school assembly and apologised for all the fuss.

"I didn't want you guys to think I didn't want to come to Bathurst, or I didn't want come to the formal [dance]," Miss Hawkins, now a TV presenter, said.

"I did. It just became too big. I just wanted a low-key thing."
