Australian Angela McKay, 20, resigned on Tuesday after only 10 days with the beauty crown, saying she did not realise her duties would be so heavy, and that she was under contract to a New York modelling agency.
Nor had she fully understood her contractual obligations as the kingdom's representative in the coming Miss World contest, she said.
"During the 10 days I've been Miss Thailand World, I've felt the duties are too heavy. It's a shame, but I can't take it," she said yesterday. But Ms McKay, her family and supporters, have been forced to deny rumours she posed for "raunchy" photographs in the months before the contest. Her Thai-born mother, Anchana, who attended a press conference in Bangkok on Tuesday with her husband, Bob, said her daughter had been the victim of a "malicious" smear campaign.
She had seen photographs that were the subject of the rumours, and they had been "tastefully taken".
Ms McKay's supporters dismissed allegations she had posed nude and said her reasons for walking away from the beauty queen title were "purely personal".
She won more than $60,000 in prizes – including 1 million bhat ($31,500), a diamond crown and a Toyota Camry.
Ms McKay was told before the competition she could work on other paid modelling jobs if she won, her aunt, Jill McKay, said yesterday.
Ms McKay has said she didn't understand the conditions in her contract, which were written in Thai.
It said she must only live off the prize money, conflicting with an existing New York modelling contract.
"Apparently the contract they wanted her to sign was really bad," her aunt said. "My brother (Bob McKay) went through it and it pretty well meant she sold her soul to them for 18 months so he pulled her out."
Her aunt said there was "a lot more to the story" and claimed her niece had been threatened with the release of the pictures if she resigned.
But Miss Thailand organisers said Ms McKay did not mention issues with the contract to them, or in press conferences, after resigning.
A spokesman said her decision to resign was supported by Miss Thailand organisers.
"There are all sorts of rumours flying around, she just didn't expect to win," Miss Thailand spokesman Andrew Biggs said yesterday.
Organisers said the contract didn't contain any unusual conditions.
